Looks like fun, but I just don't know if this will have any lasting power.

This comment thread has made me so happy; I thought I was the only one who still fondly remembered the ESCAPE VELOCITY games. (EV NOVA was my favorite.)

If you like this type of game, and haven't tried Space Rangers 2, you are really missing out.

Looks pretty decent, I'll probably pick this up. Kinda surprised that they said there haven't been games like this in a while, since I'm pretty sure it was Jeff himself who quick looked at least two similar games in the past couple of years or so, Drox Operative and Space Pirates and Zombies.

But, yes, there's also Space Rangers which was recently re-released in some kind of HD remaster.

Reminding me a lot of the old Escape Velocity games on Macintosh. Lost way too much time to EV: Override.

Am I crazy, or does the space station music sound a lot like the main unreal tournament theme?

Game seems cool, but everything about the presentation, tone, visuals, and music would need to change for me to get into it. God that music they were listening to at 6 minute is bad 80s muzak.

@straightgrizzly: Holy christ. Nostalgia hit me so hard I got misty eyed. Those promos show how amazing Toonami was. Now my heart hurts a little bit.

Inverting is how you look around in RL Brad. Tilt your head back to look up. Accept inversion as the one true God.

If you like what you see here, you should check out Star Sector (previously Starfarer). It's not finished yet but is very playable and enjoyable.

And your neck muscles pull to the right when you want to look left.

@fisk0: I wouldn't dream of making an argument for inverting left and right, like some heretic. But up and down....literally the way, the truth, the lamb...or however that goes.

But the argument for inverting up and down is null and void if you don't go all the way!

It's similar in concept, but it's not really the same at all to say that you should invert left/right if you play vertically inverted. Looking up and down pivots your head at the neck, but looking left and right rotates your head aroundthe vertical axis, therefore your eyes are a lot further away from the pivot point with vertical head movement. In a videogame rotating left and right usually turns your entire body, while looking up and down usually tilts your neck. It also helps to understand the argument when you abstract head movement from eye movement and consider them seperately.

I get why people would want to use any control scheme, and all depends on how your brain thinks of various physical movements. I use inverted on a thumbstick because to me it feels more natural as if I am controlling a puppet, but I use standard controls on a mouse because it feels like I'm physically pointing in a direction.

I think this is the most important aspect. My response about inverting left/right was said jokingly, but I hear that argument for inverted controls about "but that is how your head works", when it truth the way we think of our own body movements generally are pretty individualized, maybe even informed by your culture - such as what the common words in your language for looking around/facing towards something are, because I've tried thinking about the way inverted people describe their way of looking up and down, and I can't wrap my head around it in a physical sense either, because that's not how I feel the motion of looking up and down - I either think of it as eye movement, turning the face or the movement of the neck muscles (where left and right would be inverted), not the mechanical pitching axis of the neck or whatever the common inverted argument is.
