I hate Undertale but I'd watch Ben and Brad play through this.

I feel I've watched just about every undertale playthrough and I really haven't seen anything particularly toxic from the fandom beyond the normal gamer part of preferring a particular route. (Though no one seems upset when streamers play both?) Seems pretty tame to me unless someone can point to some serious examples.

Also: game's good, short and free, can't see why people would be upset at it?

Honestly? This.

Anyone who thinks Undertale fans are "the worst" should check out some of the hardcore sports and car fandoms out there and realize that once you start taking ANY entertainment too seriously, you wander into cringe awfulness.

I can't believe you guys completely missed the text on screen that said "Your creation will be discarded."

Hehe that drove me totally nuts too, but they redeem it, they basically acknowledge they missed something and get past it.

We're getting smack dab into the middle of the Extra Life 2018 weekend - a weekend where there's a world of goodness being made by game fans across the globe to help sick kids and their families - and then there's this fucking dumpster fire of hate going on here, in what is normally a pretty good community of somewhat-sensible enthusiasts sharing in the joy of video games.... Check your priorities, maybe? Can we have a little calm? About a video game released for free and getting some press?

I didn't have a good time with Undertale's gameplay and bounced off after a couple hours. Having such a small window to dodge in while heavily damaging attacks fly in crazy patterns was the main problem that kept me from progressing. Having more of the screen to work with looks much better.

It's weird right?

I think people just really bounced off of the over-exhuberance, which I kinda get as I did see a lot of folks say "Oh man you should play this, but make sure you play this in a certain way - *explains certain way*". Which was frustrating to see, as the best way to play that game is to go in blind (which, as an aside, is why I absolutely love Austin's review of the site so much - it's both informative and yet vague).

But to call that the worst and most toxic fandom? That's a bit much for me, it's just a bunch people who really care about a game and get carried away when talking about it. I get it, I was a pain in the arse trying to get my brother to play it. I think the vast majority of them just want others to enjoy the same things they do, nothing more.

This comment section proves that people were just beginning to bitch about the Undertale fandom again.

Pretty sure most people found out about Deltatrune via posts on Kotaku, IGN, Youtube videos, etc. Not everyone follows him on Twitter.

I don't think Toby Fox is too hot shit now to want coverage for his game.

@csl316: Well there's no way you could know how most people found out about the game, but sure, your baseless conjecture is totally true. Also he literally said not to talk about it so like, I think he didn't want it to be covered.

@robaota: Here's the secret about people hating fandoms on the internet: when something gets big with women, queer people, or kids, the mainstream rejects it on principle. The Extremely Online population also hates any sort of genuine enthusiasm for anything. Hence, Undertale has a "toxic" fandom. It's just people who are different from mainstream Gamer Bros actually feeling joy over something, which is unacceptable.

I consider myself internet-savvy enough, and I never got the impression that undertale has a "more diverse" fanbase. Totally agree with the internet hating genuine enthusiasm part. But there is a lot of that enthusiasm too, and the internet also hates what it deems "too much" of something.

As Ben correctly points out in the first, I dunno, thirty seconds of the video...it's an anagram. Undertale backwards is Elatrednu.

@deathpooky: A request on a website of something publicly released does not an embargo make.

There is no moral ground here nor there to stand on. People need to get off it.

Oh wow. Come on people. You can't be serious about trying to keep the game hidden for a day after the developer announces that you can download the game at this site. Clearly that notice is meant to the people that are interested in throwing up the plotpoints on the internet and discuss it all. Also, how the hell does this spoiler free video of the beginning of this free game impact the sales of this at all? How does this impact the sales of this free game? Even when it comes to undertale, i bet that the videos that actually cause a loss of sales are the ones that are full playthroughs of that game. Not the bite sized 'lets see what this game is' type of videos. To be frank, i bet a lot of people only buy a game if they see it pop up in one of those type of videos!

This looks like a neat extra chapter with some meat to it. The non-commital nature of this thing where it might never be a complete thing sounds like a bummer when you pair it with the exciting cliffhanger ending that Ben talked about.

Really enjoyed this game/preview. Glad Ben and Brad did the QL when they did. Serves as a neat time capsule of it's bizarre release. Playing it on Switch now, it's easy to forget.
