Playdate: Resident Evil 4 (05/29/2019)

Actually, I think the Ashley stuff in this game is totally fine, and I normally hate escort stuff as much as the next guy. I've played this game many times, including mostly recently about a year ago (checking out the latest mid-July release of the fine folks over at re4hd.com), and never felt like Ashley screwed me. I think the key is that she sticks so close to you that most of the time she's quite easy to protect. She's so good at staying out of the way that you can almost forget she's there.

Though I suppose it's possible I'm a little biased. This game is easily in my all-time top five. It's really something special.

I'm voting "no" on Mahardy. I tried to watch the Resident Kinevil runthrough of RE3 after playing that game and loving it, but he does so much backseat driving and trying to direct what Mary does to create the Perfect RE Playthrough™ that it's utterly joyless. There's already one series where he tells a woman how to play Resident Evil; we don't need two.

Cut to one year later and Abby's playing through all the Metal Gear games with Dan.

She's been spoiled by REmake 2 and may not understand that a lot of older games punish you for things like this. I thought she might do decently watching how she played last episode, but in this episode you can really see the game punishing her for not utilizing the stun-kick mechanic and for not conserving stronger weapon ammo. On the other hand, this means she might get really good with the pistol, which is an essential RE 4 skill anyway.

Who in their right minds wouldn't want more of this? Loving the heck out of this playthrough to one of my favorite games, so far.

I think the reason they haven't turned this into a feature is so they don't have to "commit" to a full playthrough and just go by feel. Though, at the moment, there is certainly enough momentum to keep going. E3 will put a wrench in that for sure. And as someone else mentioned, they've done full playthroughs on Playdate before.

Totally fair. I think maybe I'm remember it being worse than it is. I'm just at the castle and I think maybe my strong distaste for it is that I'm still in the process of getting used to the swimming aim. I did manage to shoot a man carrying Ashley off AFTER he lit some dynamite and THAT didn't go well.

One of the best games ever. OUCH! That hurt when Abby sold the gold mask. XD

RE4 Playdate continues. Keep going on this Abby, it just gets better and better.

It's hard to believe that Kojima's high school level philosophy could go over anyone's head. He's got the subtlety of a sledgehammer. Maybe a sledgehammer-equipped bipedal war machine.

Del Lago is a big mutant salamander. Still my favorite boss in the game.

Dan's philosophical "Do fish have asses?" had me cracking up. Also the lake creature looks like it's modelled on a giant salamander to me.

It seems wild to me that everyone was concerned about the kiwi-fruit, as if Abby was biting into a whole orange or something. Eating a kiwi-fruit with the skin on is basically like eating an apple with the skin on, it's thin and tastes like the rest of the fruit only slightly more sour. The only part that I wouldn't usually eat is the tiny woody bit where the stem was, but even that's fine.

The way Dan reacts in these RE videos reminded me of this baby fart reacting video. Dan is the Baby and Abby playing in a tense situation are the Fart noises.

Perhaps some degree of obliviousness is entirely consistent with thinking that the absurd lore-fest that is the Metal Gear series is a pinnacle of storytelling.

Just an FYI for conserving any future ammo. When you upgrade a weapons ammo capacity it gives you full ammo for that weapon. So if you can, try not to reload weapons like shotguns or magnum unless you absolutely have to.

I don't remember ammo conservation being anywhere near a problem in this game.

(As opposed to something like RE 3, where I couldn't progress because I didn't have any ammo for the guns)

When my brother and I used to play through games simultaneously (pre-Steam/family share), there was always the nerve-wracking potential of the accidental save-over or delete. Multiple save files with clear names were necessary!

I really wish theyd watch the cut scenes more. Part of the games charm is the dialogue and cheesiness. I fully predict come the finale Abby will be asking what the plot was and it will drive me insane.

As to Vinny's linguistics comment:

UN FORASTERO is probably the most spoken line in this game. It means an outsider, which I think is chiefly Iberian.

All the other lines are variations on curses, so I'll let people research them for themselves.

Pro tip: A single rifle shot will kill the plaga (tentacle things that sprout from the enemies heads).

I wish they'd give Abby more tips, like not using the shotgun when they're far away cause it does nothing but waste ammo, but I think they're scared she'll snap at them, she can be pretty bad at taking friendly suggestions.

Also use your damn pistol.

Dan on the Beastcast this week probably: "Hey, you guys ever hear about these things called metaphors? Seem pretty crazy to me!".

My brother loved Arkham Asylum and Arkham City, so I let him start a new save and I watched him play a bit of Arkham Knight on my PC. He never used any gadgets in combat. He mashed the attack button a whole lot and rarely evaded or landed any counters. He didn't use any of the advanced glider/grapnel techniques. I asked him if that's how he played the previous games and he said yes.

This RE4 playthrough is like watching my brother play the Arkham games. Much like Dan, I am/was constantly gritting my teeth and making weird faces at what is being overlooked. I guess that it's cool that the game can be managed if you use only the most basic of mechanics, but holy shit is it an inefficient way to play. That dynamic difficulty in RE4 sure is gonna save the day, here.
