It's a bummer that Nintendo is so rabidly hostile toward fan-developers - aggressively suing them for copyright infringement is unfortunate but understandable, but straight ripping-off the work of indie developers who had released their software as a "free, for fun" product and charging money for it is outright malicious.

Yeah this seems like it would get boring after a couple of hours... I played it for 30 minutes at launch and might dip in a few more times but that's about it.

Same. I was having a blast when it first went up for about a half hour, but I haven't played it since and don't have much of a desire to. The matches go on for too long, for one thing.

Not to throw shade, but I had just assumed that everyone knew about that hidden 1-up in 1-1.

@dasakamov:According to Nintendo, Mario 35 was in the works before Tetris 99 was released and was already in testing when Mario Battle Royale first hit the scene.

Brad keeps saying that Tetris 99 came out two years ago. It was a 2019 game.

Sure, it was in February of 2019, so it's closing in on two years. But it almost sounds like he thinks it came out in 2018.

2018 was the year of Tetris Effect.

Wow, that's a long time in development for a mediocre game they plan to delete in a few months. Almost smells like BS.

Just because it was in development years ago, didnt mean it only finished recently. Nintendo has completed games months before they even announced it (or just shelved it like Star Fox 2). and dont forget this game was made for the 35th anniversary.

I started out not liking this game, but I've hit several "Aha" moments since starting that turned me around on it. For example, once your timer is near maxed, you should avoid killing easy enemies so you can better starve your opponents of time. Also, if you're finding yourself swamped and don't want to waste resources dealing with it, you can hop into a bonus area to clear the enemy line-up.

At this point, the only issue I have with the game is match length. Because most players select easy levels for the queue and mindlessly kill swarms of enemies at every opportunity, everybody's timers stay topped off for quite a while. These are clearly the drivers, too, because special matches tend to end more quickly. (They're limited to a set selection of levels.) I imagine the special match mode exists solely because the devs recognized the design flaw of letting players choose levels early on.

Sounds like my college years.

Anyway please learn the use hyperlinks y'all. This game is cool, if I still had a Nintendo Online sub I'm sure I would play a lot of it. Maybe they'll replace it with a similar game when it gets taken down...? Probably not. But I can see a version of this with SMB1-3, World, and some other stuff as a fully fledged product, like Mario Maker coming to light if it is successful enough.

@forteexe21: It's certainly possible the game was simultaneously in development as the fan-based similar game, but there's a long history of Nintendo threatening fan-developers who aren't making profits off their projects, and then (coincidentally) an official Nintendo version of an extremely similar game being released very shortly after.

I suppose my biggest issue is how unneccesarily vicious Nintendo is toward fan developers. Contrast Nintendo's "That's OUR IP, you scumbags, and we'll destroy you in court" with with Sega's approach of "Well, legally we have to shut you down, but what you did was pretty cool! We may have some job openings for you on one of our teams!" and it's not hard to see why people don't always accept Nintendo's responses at face value.

I'm cool with the game using the 35 players' choices to form the level pool, but it definitely weights later levels to appear toward the end of the queue, so if you picked an interesting level like 8-2 or 6-3, it has a very high likelihood of not appearing until you've gone through 30 other levels, most of which are World 1 over and over. Most games are finished already by that point; even if you are good enough to survive that long, you need somebody else to survive that long too or else you'll never see it. Couple that with the fact that in order to unlock a new level choice you must have cleared either the level itself after somebody else picked it, or every previous level in the game, and it means you can go 10-20 games without even having a chance of unlocking anything new. I've been stuck trying to unlock World 6 levels for a few days now.

The two cases I can think of are this Mario Battle Royale game and the Metroid 2 remake, and if you think the time between the takedowns and the release of the official product in either of those cases was enough to make an entire game, I've got a bridge to sell you.

Wouldn't the strategy shift from "sending enemies" to your opponants, to "depriving enemies" during the top 5? So only killing shadow enemies and skipping real ones, starving your opponant at as many tries to get time back?
