I'm a monster.

I love motion smoothing on our television. Not all TVs do it the same/as well, some of the low end TVs are particularly bad about how the implement it or giving no options for control, but we'll nearly always leave it on - clarity, evens out poor framerates or jumpy shots, you can tweak if for various situations, often gives you a better view of the moving components in gaming, etc. I fully realize it doesn't give you the "classic" look of 24 FPS, but I generally prefer it from a "viewing the image" perspective.

I'm a monster. But a monster with a beautiful picture.

Is motion smoothing different than a tv at 60hz vs 120hz?

I bought an XBOX One S - I agree about the controller. I have a 4k tv and I'm very pleased with the console.

I'm guessing that MOST Giantbomb visitors are not premium users. It wouldn't make sense to place locked content as the default and risk giving the impression that most of Giantbomb's content is restricted to premium users.

@klaptos said:

Not everyone has premium. If someone new shows up at the site they could think the beastcast is premium only. At least that's what I think.

Why isn't the premium version shown on the front page by default anyway? That would be nice.

@ray_marden: I love using the motion smoothing on my TV on weird, higher framerate stuff like those old episodes of the Twilight Zone that were recorded on tape at 30 fps. Looks great and extra freaky / fun.

What Bakalar was thinking of, though I never played the game myself, so I don't know when/where this video is from.

My childhood memory of Silver Dollar City is of wishing we had gone to a Six Flags instead so it's probably a great place.

@lurkero: Of course I meant that it would be shown only to premium users. Can't remember how many times I've had surprise ads drop on me in the middle of a podcast.

Silver Dollar City is a lot better than Dan describes it, I think; the property is beautiful, the attractions are interesting with a variety of craftspeople (blacksmiths, glassblowers, woodworking, etc.), and they've invested a ton into new rides over the last few years. I've got years of good memories going there on family vacations.

They definitely play up the Ozarks redneck theme, but it is in a very wink-and-nod way that works, for what it is.

The gimmicky tables in the underground restaurant are as good as he describes them.

I don't know whether to hold hope for a Mario Party Party: East Coast Edition or not.

I somehow feel the Beastduders are a little too avuncular to replicate the magic of Jeff G's overt distaste.

OMG Brie is NOT a fancy cheese !

I can't help but think that Dan thinks any cheese you don't spray out of a can is fancy cheese, so the barrier for entry is pretty low.

Brie is regularly combined with bacon.

This automatically steps it a level up on the Cheese Appreciation Index. (Though the regular partnership with cranberry does hold it back a couple of extra percentage points).

I'm from Monmouth County, and have a working class dad who eats a "porkroll egg & cheese" for breakfast. Even though the package says "Taylor Ham" on it, I've always known it as porkroll

My dad LOVES that motion smoothing thing! So much so, that when he came to visit me for a few weeks he HAD to buy me a "better" tv (my old one didn't have the feature) and insisted on turning it on. Couldn't watch tv without it. I detest it, gives me the hebegebees. Turned off now, but he'll be back at Christmas, and it's the one setting on the tv he can find...

I think most of TellTale's Sam & Max games were brilliant, especially the first seasons. And despite knowing very little about Homestar Runner I ended up loving the Strong Bad games.

Sadly they threw away those Adventure game mechanics in favor of the "choose your own adventure" style they are known for today. I know a lot of people love The Walking Dead and Fables games, but I've always thought their older stuff felt more engaging, funnily enough.

I completely agree. Sam & Max was great, with various kinds of humor and a clever balance between old point & click games and modern adventure games. Never played the Strong Bad games but they also seemed nice. The stuff they do now doesn't capture my interest at all.

The original Sam and Max is too simple by todays standards. It had its charm, but there's no way it would sell. Even back then it got by pretty heavily on the mere fact that they were "bringing back adventure games" and Sam and Max itself. It wasn't until that third game that they started pushing the boundaries of normal point and click conventions.

I do wish they would return to that series though and continue developing their mechanics though. I thought Tales from the Borderlands was one of their best games to date, but they need to mix things up. Even if they were doing half choose your adventure and half traditional point and click it would least bring some variety to their line-up.

@belowstupid: It's essentially the same thing. By having a higher framerate (or cheating to create a similar effect,) it opens up the possibility of smoothing out the frames and/or adding in other processing effects.

OH FUCK AN OSCEOLA CHEESE SHOUT OUT. THIS BEASTCAST RULES.

Also I went to Silver Dollar City in the winter and watched (from the door) a guy in a christmas tree costume sing enthusiastically to a completely empty theater. It, and Branson, are just the worst.

Telltale games are much more enjoyable if you enter into them realizing you're sort of just watching a TV show. It's sort of like the modern manifestation of the choice theater thing that was described in the beginning of this podcast.

I shared Dan's mindset and just could not grasp the love for these games for a long time before finally playing one and coming to this realization.

Huh, my earlier comment about Michael Douglas got deleted, I think. Hope it wasn't too vulgar!

It was basically about how Michael Douglas IS probably doing alright, since his son recently got out of jail and even when he had throat cancer, he claimed it was because he loved to perform oral sex on his wife too much.

I've wrecked some Osceola cheese in my day. Osceola definitely has some fancy cheese though so Dan isn't 100% correct. I don't think he's really looking for it.

That said, Dan is correct Missouri is a complete dumpster fire. They omitted Jesus billboards. Porn, Jesus and Fireworks.

The base in question is Fort Leonard Wood Missouri, also a horrible place.

Telltale games are like super high production value visual novels. I guess I've always liked the writing and dialogue in adventure games more than the "puzzles" so I didn't consider it a huge loss when Telltale mostly dropped the puzzles.

Branson, MO seems like the kind of destination that people that live out in BFE middle America get excited about, but if you're from somewhere that actually has decent places to go/things to do it's not a big deal at all. I visited Texas a couple years ago and the town slogan in Austin is "Keep Austin Weird". Weird? This place isn't weird. Try going to Berkeley some time and then talk to me about weird.

Yes @alex. Ape Escape should come back.

Also, I never felt the consoles having original series was the worst idea (because they'd have the install base to compete on the level with a Netflix, Amazon, etc) but I watched the pilot of Powers and was not interested in continuing.

Team Pork Roll. It's a regional bologna/salami that's usually fried and eaten for breakfast. Outside of NJ you'll have to settle for fried bologna or SPAM.

Scrapple is a regional pork by-product/cornmeal loaf that is usually fried and eaten for breakfast. My grandfather who worked on a pig farm as a youth called it "everything but the squeal."
