@waterfallsuite:

FreeNAS is open source and generally pretty easy to understand. It has a web-based monitoring/configuration tool that is pretty self-explanatory and the community is really helpful. For a cheap-ish setup, the new RaspberryPI 4 attached to a couple drives (Redundancy is the best part of NAS) would probably work very well, especially if you’re not doing any media transcoding. If you were running a Plex server, common wisdom is to get something a little more powerful for any transcoding that might occur. For simple backup and storage, I believe even the cheapest RaspberryPI will manage such a task.

It cannot be stressed enough that you need to get NAS-rated storage.

Yes Brad, Montana! We do have wildfire season too, but they don't get to the towns/suburbs with any regularity.

Milwaukee man. It's like Chicago (segregated and cold), but way way cheaper. Also my internet doesn't have a cap, and they literally currently have my street torn up installing fiber.

Milwaukee is the answer.

Great Hotspot as always but ooof that bass crank at the end was not welcome. Feel like I'm gonna hear from my downstairs neighbor over that one.

Sorry to report that Colorado is also on fire. Currently seeing our largest fire in history, but hey at least it's not every single year?

Those "Love the city; haven't been there in months!" and "House I might be able to afford where???" are definitely relatable. That, and other personal reasons, necessitated my leave from NYC (which I don't regret! Still a bit sad to leave, though).
