I like my Buck knife. The Sheffield I had before was okay. But the Buck seems to have better steel, and notches on the handle for better gripping.

Edit, with what I hear on this show and other's what happens in Vinny's basement with sewage back ups, shoes might be advisable. Hopefully doesn't flood like I have seen a few times in the past in other basements.

The bad Seagate drives were from a Firmware Issue. I was working at NCIX at the time (In the RMA department) and Supermicro was trying to get us to upgrade the firmware on the returned drives at the time

I may be from the "deep country." Grew up in Mississippi and had a graduating class of 30 people. I honestly wouldn't mind going back to that if I could still work in animation from there. Much better than spending $2200 a month on a small studio apartment in the east bay.

My biggest piece of advice is to avoid those crappy ~$20 irons. I had one and thought I was terrible / hated soldering but it's one case where the tool really was to blame. I eventually upgraded to the $100 Hakko FX-888 that everyone recommends (the Weller WE1010 is also fine). It's like night and day. The thing actually holds its temperature for a decent connection, the way an iron is supposed to work.

Thank you for this advice! I'm in the "I must be terrible at this, I give up" camp with my piece-o-shit one that I finally threw away a year or so back. I'm going to get a little Hakko FX-888 kit and try again.

As someone who is fully paypal + apple pay (and similarly aged as these gentlemen) Vinny needs to join the life. I just have it always backed by a credit card with protection, but yeah.

Apple Pay / samsung pay is _THE BEST_.

I had to solder the rumble motors back to the board in an Xbox One controller that I knocked off when repairing another part of the controller. As my first soldering experience it looked terrible when I was done but totally fixed the rumble so whatever.

Speaking of old animals, whales can reach 200++ years. That means that there are whales out there who were around in the early 1800s or earlier. They were already old as hell during the civil war.. They existed for many decades before the first motorized boat hit the ocean...

Take care of the ocean, it doesn't actually belong to us.

Chicago's great, come down here. Sure, it gets cold, but that's just a good excuse to stay inside for a few months. I'm in the suburbs by some quiet forest preserves, 30 minutes from a city that has a ton to do and see. Out here it's affordable, too!

Come on out to the home of Roundhouse Studios (formerly Human Head Studios) Madison, WI. It's like a smaller Seattle, which a surprising amount of people in Seattle have told me when I visit there. And we, at least the people I know, don't wear shoes in our houses. So there's that.

Much like building PC's it's mostly as complicated as you want to make it.

I don't have a NAS and have only built PC's but this guide seems like a good starting point.

I can patch bike tubes but I have only used a soldering kit on broken headphones. I'm pretty slow/bad at tieing fish hook flies so I don't think I'm much better at soldering. Being slow is still sometimes better than having to pay someone to do it and it does make you appreciate the skill.

They had an e-mail on the Beastcast some weeks ago asking about their headphones.

It's helpful to know about those dodgy Seagate NAS drives. Seems I've been conned by Seagate, but only to the tune of one spare drive fortunately. The two drives in my NAS are the old, good type. But the spare I bought recently is now useless.

@alex Sorry for being THAT guy but David Icke's name is pronounced "Ike" like the American name rather than "icky" :P

Having said all that, your alternative pronunciation kinda makes sense. Icke and his theories make everyone feel quite icky :D

I remember playing Silent Service back in the mid-80s, I didn't have a manual and remember going through the whole keyboard pressing 1 key at a time to see what it did, games at the time didn't list keyboard commands in-game as they took up too much memory. One of the keys displayed a screen saying, "PROCESSING PLEASE WAIT", in green text on a black background. For the life of me I couldn't work out what it was, I sat and watched it for an hour once wondering what it was processing, it was only years later I discovered a proper keyboard list and discovered it was 'Boss Mode' and the idea was if you were playing at work you hit that key and it made it look like you were waiting for the computer to finish processing a job and not playing games.

If CBS has offices in Chicago, I'd move their in a heartbeat.

@peacebrother: Agreed. The Hotspot with the OG Giant Bomb Duders is their best podcast. It reminds me of the Golden Age of Giant Bomb, before Ryan (RIP) passed away in 2013.
