This Is the Run: Jackal - Part 01

Oh wowowow, can't believe they did it! Guess they'll have to pick a harder game next time!

So, I remember loving this game and beating it multiple times with my brothers as a kid and watching it now I feel like I can't remember what we possibly liked so much about it. But watching these guys play it and goof about is still a lot of fun! I hope it lasts longer than 2 episodes!

@onarum: It's one thing to watch someone play a game for 40 minutes and pick up subtleties, and an entirely different thing to put a good portion of your brainpower to work playing a game for 40 minutes and still try to pick up those subtleties.

That's a great idea. They'd have to use the Rare Replay version, which (I understand) fixes the 2-player glitch in Level 11. (Or just use warps, though that seems a little antithetical to the spirit of the feature.)

As a kid Jackal was one of my favorite games. The soundtrack was awesome, blowing up turrets and medusa heads with missles was awesome and that noise every time you rescue a P.O.W is awesome. But man did this game kick my ass. I think I only made it to stage 5 a handful of times till I got a GameGenie. I wonder if playing contra is harnessing their "nes hard" skills or if Jackal is significantly easier in 2P. Either way here's hoping Battletoads is next.

Jackal is great. We should all go play Renegade Ops now.

PS: How is Renegade Ops not backwards compatible yet?

I did a quick 'n' dirty edit of "Here?". Which tells me, that someone with skill could do something good.

Yeah, I think we need someone with some art skills to make the "Here?" image but with Vinny, Dan, Alex and Abby as the people in the jeep.

My brother and I would play the heck out of Jackal as kiddos. Was really hoping for this to be the next game in the "This is the Run" series. Thank you boys!

It's going to be glorious to see some fan art for this one. And since I can't draw for shit, I'm just going to fling out a few ideas, and see if some of it sticks. =D

Vinny and Dan dressed up in military uniforms; Dan wearing green and Vinny should be brown. They are standing by a jeep, with a map on the hood, Vinny pointing at the map asking "Here?", Dan's just scratching his head. Meanwhile the war is still going on in the background. A half blown up house, with some prisoners of war waving and yelling "HELP!"

Side note, I'm a little surprised they aren't giving Super C for the NES a try. That being said, Super C is miles beyond harder than regular Contra.

@langdonx: ... well actually I immediately picked it up the first time they hit both structures, and I consider myself to be a very stupid person; Also I'd hardly call that a subtlety, it's obviously meant to be easily differentiated.

But oh well, nothing to it, I just find it amusing that they do this quite often, maybe it's something to do with the playing and commenting at the same time.

@danryckert, @vinny, There are three upgrades to the missiles. If you get the third upgrade you get a main blast with 4 directions. This is how you hit enemies behind dug in positions. You don't need to downgrade your secondary weapon. Cheers

I've never heard of this game, looks pretty rad. And I am so glad to see this series back! Hope this will be a somewhat regular feature on the site in 2018, stuff like this is why I maintain a premium subscription.

I actually had this game when I was a kid. I am pretty sure I got it when it came out. I remember having to drop those guys off at the helipads. This is some historical transitional period of games shit right here.
