Unfinished: Bunker Punks 04/20/2016

Bunker ain't no religious cult. Bunker means thinkin' for yourself.

Sometimes we look at a game before it's done. When that's the case? Well... it must be Unfinished.

"Don't mess with Texas!"
Seems cool, sort of reminds me of 'Tower Of Guns', but maybe more fully realized

This game is super early, but man I'm having a lot of fun with it so far. Just doing different runs and seeing how far to go is fun even without content really.

I was pretty dissapointed with this game personally. Something like a first person Enter the Gungeon would be rad, but this doesn't even come close to anything like that. Most of the enemies are really boring to fight, the level design is all just really bland boring big open empty rooms and pretty much all the gun sprites either look really boring or just overall terrible. Like, that shotgun sprite just looks awful. Also, does anyone else find it really weird and misleading that their title screen have these nice drawn characters but then in-game it's all pixel art?

I was hoping Brad and Jeff specifically would take a look at this. Been playing it for about two weeks and I've been having a blast with it. Game has a ton of potential. The moving and shooting feels soooooo good.

This game could use some animation, i've been playing Brutal Doom recently so maybe i've been spoiled, but it's one thing to have still pixel assets and another to give them life.

Fine I won't mess with Texas!

The look and speed has a wolfenstein feel to me, not sure if anyone else got that. But it looks like you can use some "skillful movement" in this game to dodge enemy fires so goodbye blackroom! Hopefully there are some meaningful upgrades because different characters not having unique skills is a bit of a bummer coming off of nuclear throne and enter the gungeon

I would imagine that the merchant you could buy at the end of the run would be another van that shows up in the car park that sells different types of stuff.

Can we, as a species, just hold back a little bit on the roguelike bs? Seriously, indie games nowadays are either couch competitive multi-player, single player roguelikes, or walking simulators. Where's the innovation?

@sravankb: We're currently seeing the greater market problem reflected at this level, too: indie games have become expensive, simply in terms of paying for employees and their time; there is a certain amount of risk minimization going on because it has to. Make well-produced, attractive indie games less crushingly expensive to make and you'll see more innovation.

(I have no idea how we do that.)

I got horribly addicted to Rogue Shooter (please to sequel now?), so this looks very promising if they add a lot more variety.

Also, a bunker with no mystery crank ain't no bunker at all, crank you very much.

Promising, but not complete enough yet to keep playing. Really hope they make a lot of changes to the level design, walking into an open room and then having all the enemies make a beeline to you before you're out of the door isn't great.

I like how Brad's critique of an old-style shooter always comes around to the feel of the rocket launcher.

And gg on that description, Jason.

The game itself reminds me of GunGodz. I wonder if there'll be a Yung Venuz reference?

Looks dumb. There's a reason we've moved past doom. All these "indie" games are like those shitty commercials that use ukulele and child pianos; overdone and boring at this point. This game's "rogue likeness" is just a stupid "clever" whistle added to the commercial soundtrack.

Indie game development is way more market-focused than it used to be. It's easier to sell a game full of ideas people are already familiar with than something that is breaking a lot of new ground and can't be wrapped up in a sexy one-liner. Marketing is a huge factor for indie games and has been for a handful of years. Teams are also getting larger and the technology is becoming easier to use for amateurs (Unity, GameMaker,) so games are much easier to make and iterate over.

Game design, however, hasn't gotten any easier, and for most devs it boils down to coming up with a decent aesthetic and borrowing ideas from whatever is trending at the time. Creating interesting levels and mechanics is way harder than stitching together procedurally-generated dungeons using tools bought off the Unity Asset Store and claiming "infinite replay value."

(I'm not commenting on this game- haven't played it.)

As for innovation: It's entirely possible that good, innovative games can just be completely missed given the huge number of games being released. I recommend checking devlogs on TIGSource and poking around on itch.io if you want to check out more experimental and less "mainstream" games that get swept under the rug.

Yep, we've sure moved past Doom. Which is why DOOM 4 is on the verge of being released and Carmack and Romero just launched a Kickstarter campaign for a new DOOM-ish arena shooter called Blackroom.
