I feel sorry for the crew that it goes awry every time they try to build a PC on camera. And then has no problems doing it in private. The camera can turn easy tasks into bomb defusal.

Last time they tried bomb defusal, it didn't go well either.

This was almost as painful as a Mario Party. I always thought they were joking when they act like they don't understand computers on the Bombcast.

This is way too shitty and critical. I recently built a full new PC (using that same case) and it took me about two hours. I wasn't using liquid cooling, I wasn't on camera, I wasn't watching somebody play DDR, I was working by myself, and I had a working screwdriver. This stuff is annoying and hard (arguably harder than it really needs to be), and they demonstrated that.

I've just read a handful of comments, but it's mostly just shitty "I would have spent Jeff's money and bought a Cyberwhacker XXX instead of that stupid cooler/GPU/case/PSU" comments, isn't it?

Btw, isn't applying thermal paste no matter what an outdated thing? To my knowledge, coolers have had a thin sliver of paste on it for years and years now and you're not really supposed to add any unless you're reseating the cooler or the pre-applied paste was scraped off. Adding more actually lessens the heat transfer. And even if you do use any it's only a pea-sized worth. Not so?

@gyozilla: thermal paste techniques/theories are the absolute most aggravating part of the pc building community. pea sized dollop in middle, smush down, done. anything else is splitting very microscopic hairs.

my first build was in 2003 using only maximum pc magazines. My parents wouldn't allow a computer in our house, so I got a job and snuck in one part at a time.
Asus p4ps8x, ati 9700pro, 2GB of DDR1 and a bootleg ass chinese powersupply that shot fire out of my floppy disk drive.
Moral of the story, don't buy sketchy psu's from computer shows.

Sure....you get all that with air...just more silent, more efficient, less prone to break, and if they break they won't just crash your system/flat out kill it and of course the are cheaper.

Probably for noise reasons. A pre-built water loop isn't that much more that the sort of cooler you'd need to run silently.

Depends on the cooler. I'm fairly sure mine (pre-build water loop) didn't have any pre-applied (and sometimes the pre-applied stuff isn't great, but that only really matters if going for an aggressive overclock - it's a difference of a few degrees Celsius at most)

You would not say that if you had to clean a radiator that had the fans in push configuration on them...that is impossible to clean.

After Jeff put the damn MB on the static bag I had to stop watching. This is just to much.

Good stuff !.

Hopefully this will encourage more folks to engage with PC builds or even just upgrading. It was nice to hear Brad talk about how he managed to catch his t-shirt on one of the slots and bent the teeth. Stuff like that happens to the best of us. Give it a go. A person who has never made a mistake, never tried anything themselves.

@guanophobic: It's probably going to be the same on any day. It's a job and people want work-life balance. But I of course miss the Whiskey college dorm days where people hung around and crazy spontaneous shit happens. Ryan being there as a co-conspirator to fuel Jeff's insanity and vice versa definitely made it possible. It's probably related to Jeff sometimes recounting how he used to be pissed off when some coworkers leave on time and how they're not as serious or want it as much as he does.

i am talking about pull config, obviously. there's no real advantage to having it in push. i have no idea how they installed it, i haven't watched the video.

I'm a MITX builder and unless you want SLI, it's the way to go. I still have 6 SATA ports, I still have a a m.2 and some other PCIe card slot (the horizontal ones on the mono on the back) and I still have a PCIe slot for any card you may want. It's got enough space for the biggest GPUs I've seen, it overclocks my CPU nicely and it supports 32GB of ram. On top of that I have Wifi AC built in, I have 8 USB 3 ports, I have a HDMI out and in port and some other crazy ports I don't use. It has 5.1 support, but I just use the Audioquest Dragonfly Red for audio out... it's way better than any onboard and any any PCIe Soundcard, I use the Jitterbug as well to reduce USB noise.

I just don't see the point in ATX any more as SLI sucks.

@afashionablehat: Thank you for your downright decent and reasonable comment. People need to chill out, especially when complaining over people's purchasing desicions.

Also as @dr34dn0ught said a person who has never made a mistake has never tried anything themselves.

Relax and enjoy or if you can't don't watch and give yourself that stress. I thought the whole thing was interesting, and definitely has taught me a few things if I ever use watercooling in a future build.

Building a PC is like making a cheese soufflé. It not actually hard, but if you don't do it often, it easy to make a mess...or feel overwhelmed by the multiple steps. But, it is okay! It is actually rather hard to break stuff, unless you really go out of you way to force a square peg in a round hole.

I will say that trying to teach Dan to dance while building a PC is perhaps a level of difficulty beyond what they needed to pile on themselves.

My experience with closed loops is that you install it. Look at it. Then tear it out spin it around? Look at it. Tear it out again. Re-routing all the fan wires. Install the cooler again. At which point you have mastered putting THAT cooler in THAT case. That knowledge is OF COURSE useless knowledge for putting THAT cooler into another case or any other combination. On the other hand once installed nicely the cooler is fantastic and it all looks very pretty in you are into that sort of thing.

Jeff's PC:

Motherboard: Gigabyte GA-Z170X-Gaming 7

CPU: Intel 6700k

RAM: G.Skill Ripjaws 16gb DDR4(Don't know the frequency)

CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V.2

PSU: EVGA Supernova 850GS

SSD: Western Digital WD Blue 1TB

Case:Fractal Design Define R5 Black

GPU: GTX 1080 Founders Edition

M.2 SSD : 1TB M.2 Intel 540

Man, I mentioned this in the chat, but seeing it all laid out, he really overspent on that PSU. And especially after all of the trouble he had setting it up, that watercooler was a bit over the top, too.

I was totally gonna go for water cooling like Jeff did, but then person who helped me put my new PC together said it was overkill. That's the main reason I went with him, for his honesty and not trying to oversell me an expensive component. That and the PSU. Then again, PC parts are much cheaper in the U.S than where I live! My PC runs beautifully, practically everything else is like Jeff's, expect for the GPU, which is a generation older.

I haven't done it myself, but yes, generally speaking, PS1 and PS2 controllers can play nicely on either system and from what I've read, that does include dance pads, which makes sense since at a technical level, they're just giant d-pads. One thing you should be careful about, though: the song lists for the PS2 DDR games that made it overseas are somewhat different from the original Japanese releases because of licensing issues. I think they still have a decent chunk of the classic songs everybody remembers, but if you want a really pure DDR experience, it's best to import the original Japanese games, although that obviously entails a little extra work getting those games to run if you don't have a Japanese PS2 on hand.

Edit: Forgot that you mentioned wanting to play the PS1 games specifically. What's important to note is that region locking still applies to PS1 games on PS2 consoles, so you can't play Japanese PS1 games on US PS2 games out of the box. There are ways to circumvent this protection, of course, but they're a bit of a hassle. Some PS1 DDR games I believe came out in PAL territories (again, with somewhat modified song lists than what you saw in this video, I believe), so obviously if that's what your PS2 is, then forget I warned you at all, but otherwise it's going to take a little work to get the games up and running on your PS2 since it's a little more complex than running import PS2 games.

Thanks for the show guys! It was awfully brave of you to assemble a PC in full view of the Internet, something I would never have the gumption to attempt. I recently built a PC almost identical to this one and when you only do it once every 6 years, it's tough. Definitely worth it, though. Like me, you'll now be able to rip on poorly optimized PC ports with authority.
