Founded in late 2008, SURGE was intended to be Namco-Bandai's label for games intended for a Western audience. Their 2009 adaptation of Afro Samurai would be the only game released under this label. Other games had been intended for the SURGE label (including the Splatterhouse reboot then being worked on by Bottlerocket Entertainment), but with no other games released under it, it is assumed that Namco-Bandai scrapped plans for the label after Afro Samurai's middling sales and Splatterhouse's eighteen-month delay upon Namco-Bandai bringing the project back in-house.
