A Brief Criticism of Undertale
I might be in the minority of folks that actively dislikes this game.
I don't understand the affection for this one. Maybe someone like me in their 30's just doesn't get it. The music is pretty good, but it's not award-winning in my opinion. There are some clever jokes and moments in the game. I'm impressed that one person accomplished all of this even though it did not resonate with me. The writing tries very hard to be funny, but most of it fell flat. It seems like humor that a teenager would appreciate, but I could be wrong. The story is just mostly weird for the sake of being weird. In this monster world, it seems that anything goes, and it makes little sense. The old-school RPG nature of the game was mostly tedious. The art was okay, and I'm having serious 16-bit RPG-Maker art fatigue at the current moment, so that didn't help things.
It has a lot of personality to be sure, but the humor in the battles were often lost to me because I was angry about the bullet-hell nature of them. The game is actually very difficult for folks not interested in bullet-hell shooter mechanics, and I'm afraid that many folks looking to enjoy the story will stop playing after a few hours due to this. I saw it to the end, and I'm really frustrated that the Frog Fractions/I Wanna Be the Boshy-like insane moment was 7 hours in and behind repetitive boss fights. There were many fights in the game that I had to do several times to get through it, and each time I hit a Game Over screen the game just made me angry because it felt cheap, and it annoyed me that I'd have to read all the dialogue again and again. The ending was not satisfying to me, and sorry, I can't imagine going through the game a second time like it recommends the player to do.
I can't recommend this game, unless you're desperate for some weird dialogue at any cost.
