good good let the hate flow forth.

$300 to milk a cow. Nintendo jumped the shark with this console. They may have moved away from the Wii name but they've tripled down on the Wii concept. And instead of assuring future owners that the software won't stop a year and a half into the consoles life cycle they've jacked the prices of all the hardware to make up the monetary difference that games would bring in.

Maybe since all the software development is focused on one console the games will come in floods but we shall see.

$300 to milk a cow is incredibly reductive. I'm not excusing Nintendo for showing it off the way they did, but you're criticizing them for one game, shown at launch. Which console HASN'T had a rough launch? PS4 only got by due to MS dropping the ball. I would at least wait and see, and not be so immediately judgemental. The concept and potential are all still there.

$300 is a bit high but it's not extravagantly more than $250, still in the same price bracket I would say. I guess the $50 makes more psychological than real world difference.

Disappointed by the awkward presentation and price of the console/controllers/etc.
Nintendo clearly hasn't made any progress mending their 3rd party relationships.
I think I'll pick up a Switch this fall/early next year for Zelda, Mario and Shin Megami Tensei.

I don't know what PS4 and MS dropping some ball have to do with Nintendo thinking that people want to milk cows and playing ping pong with sound cues. People thought that mini-games would be a launch only thing for the Wii as well but it ended up being that consoles life support.

For some reason my comment got lost. Sorry if this is a duplicate.

Drew said on UPF that he pre-ordered this at 3 AM last night. He was able to get a pre-order even though it sold out very quickly.

Mary asked him what was in the presentation that made him want to have it. He said he wanted the new Nintendo and that he likes playing portable games.

Thanks for getting this up so fast guys

I think its about time for Nintendo to get out of the console business. To me the Switch looks just as disappointing as the Wii U if not more so. Its frustrating because they still make great games, but they are locked up on their gimmicky consoles that I just can't justify buying for the couple games I would really like to play.

In a predicament. I really would rather wait for a bigger catalogue because putting down money for this... but man, as somebody who doesn't give a crap about basically any big Nintendo property... the new Mario and Zelda look incredibly exciting to me. Like, both of them are probably the most impressive-looking things I've seen from those franchises in a long time. It's tempting!

$300 for the console, $70 for the basically required real controller, $80 for a sizeable SD card, whatever it costs for the ethernet dongle. This isn't a $300 console. This is like the Vita where Sony ripped key shit out and make you pay for it under the guise of making the console cheaper.

The garbage online setup, the joke of a trial game each month, the cost of peripherals, etc., etc. Nintendo blew past the Xbone's bungled reveal and basically set new records with this thing.

Nintendo should not get out of the console business as a lot of people think. I like that we have somebody in this business that makes games where we interact and control games in unique and interesting ways. Not just with a gamepad controller or a mouse and keyboard. I really hope Nintendo finds success with this system despite some of my misgivings over what they showed (or lack thereof) last night.

All that motion control stuff just looks dumb. Does anybody actually want that stuff? Is it popular in Japan or something? It just seems baffling to me. The Wii came out 11 years ago...

Also, that fucking milking game. Holy shit that made me laugh. Jeff with the "it's all over your jeans" comment got me good.

I'm happy to accept Nintendo's console business exists in a space where it shouldn't be directly compared to Sony or Microsoft but by taking something like a paid online service and doing it worse certainly isn't a great look for them. Obviously pricing and actual features are still not fully confirmed but initially it doesn't come across well. Even if it is cheaper, things like only having the monthly 'free' games available for a set period before then having to be paid for is a really poor move in comparison to the other services. They have made so much money selling these games over and over again on different systems it would have just been a great pro-consumer move to allow people to build up a library of old games by staying subscribed.

They probably should have not said anything about this online stuff until they could put a price on it. No idea what they're thinking with that.

Otherwise it looks pretty much like what I expected (though hopefully I'll get to try this HD rumble for myself; the stuff on Steam controller was kind of neat).

This is a Wii U in a sleeker package with a promise of more portability that will be rarely utilised.

As someone who has been wanting to buy a Nintendo console for a long time this still fails to bring me in. It's a Zelda box for me at this rate much like the Wii U would've been a Bayonetta and W101 box if I had bought it.

@worlddude: And some people said the Wii U gamepad was fine, too. I've watched 10 videos of different people using it, and stretching down to hit the right thumbstick and the left buttons is an awful reach. And with the right buttons you have to like reach around the right thumbstick to hit the left and bottom buttons on the right side. Not to mention the shoulder buttons are tiny and virtually zero throw on them.

I'll trust my instinct and what I have seen, and be pleasantly surprised if it is anything more than "garbage."

I'll wait and see how this system survives after a while. I was going to get it sometime this year, and I still might, but seeing the weak reveal and the many issues that don't make sense, I think a day one purchase isn't smart. All Nintendo really has at this point is their first party games, and if those can't deliver, then I don't see how they can compete in a console market that is already showing signs of uncertainty, based on what Sony and Microsoft are going through. I hope for their sake that Zelda game is a 10/10, because they really need it.

Wow, it's like they didn't learn anything from the Wii U. This is going to be the same thing, you can already see it. It's going to be another trickle of Nintendo releases and barebones third party support. No one is going to want to develop for their underpowered special-snowflake console when they can aim for cross platform PC/PS4/XB1. Or hell, even an exclusive to any one of those three platforms would probably sell better. Maybe Nintendo should get out of the console business.

I feel like Nintendo is trying too hard to differentiate from Microsoft and Sony by adding all these wacky games, and as much as i enjoy some Nintendo wackiness i don't think they are going the right direction at all. I also dont understand why they are rolling out an internet pay service and voice chat on a phone? like WHAT?

While I don't think this is looking like some huge disaster, the online service and the catalogue of games really seem like major negatives. I simply don't understand the phone-app chat stuff, and I feel like there *must* be more to it. Of course they did say the full online service will be implemented in the fall, so we'll have to wait until then for a comprehensive judgement on it. But like Jeff said in his stream, if they are making it a paid service it will have to be a BIG step up from the prior systems.

As for the selection of games... it was so dispiriting to hear Dan basically say that it's acceptable for a Nintendo console to have nothing to look forward to but a new core Nintendo game every three to four months. Like, that is NOT a successful system right there. Play Zelda, gather dust for several weeks, play Splatoon, gather dust, etc. Even if you want the Switch why would you get it prior to Christmas season? It looks so sparse.

P.S. You can totally have parties of like 6-12 people. I think 1-2 Switch is an acceptable party game in the Wii Sports mold of "Absolutely anyone can play this game". Whether it's fun or not is yet to be seen.

I am gonna get this because like Dan I just want my 3-4 nintendo games a year. At first glance this looks like its going to fail like the Wii U though. Those motion control games looked really crazy, maybe its a feel vs watching thing but that table tennis min-game did not look straight forward at all.

I'm with Jeff in that it's super disappointing to not see more of the 3DS's DNA and games lineage on the Switch. The Fire Emblem Warriors game was a real bummer, in the similar way that Hyrule Warriors disappointed fans who were waiting on Breath of the Wilds. The difference here is that Fire Emblem, like Pokemon, is one of their successful 3DS game franchises, and to see the first game from a 3DS-based series to be an uninspired spin-off is depressing. Also, where is Pokemon? I hope they announce more mainline titles from handheld land before the years is out, because Zelda, Mario, and Splatoon aren't going to carry this thing any more than they carried the Wii U.

I guess this also means that now we'll see if there's any truth to the popular notion that the "Wii" branding had a hand in the Wii U's failure. Seeing as how the Switch is just a Wii U with the guts in the tablet and detachable Wiimotes Joycons, and the software catalog so far is just more of the same.

The concept and potential are all still there.

you're still citing one game experience, early in the console's life. first impressions and all that but we haven't seen anything of what this system has to offer yet i think.

i think those who were expecting the magical $200-250 system that would play all the PS4/360 games at their fidelity level (or better!) and still be portable were highly deluding themselves. i'm a huge nintendo fan and i was never going to make myself believe they could pull that off. still sounds like they implemented the hybrid experience well. i'm hoping they take the paid online service in a different/better direction; i don't hate the for it and it may prove worthwhile but it would be nice to have PS Plus style downloads or a wider selection of VC games to pick from. and we'll get more games and sequels to games already on 3ds/wii u; it's just a matter of time. this hate-athon is unjustified, but sadly predictable.

I'm grateful and excited that Nintendo has found a canvas on which to make insane games and traditional games whose separate existences need not interfere with one a other. I'll enjoy both. The versatility is there. I hope it goes places.

The machine itself honestly seems pretty awesome to me, all the gimmicks included. But holy hell wtf is with the lack of games.....it really feels to me like the switch wasnt ready to launch at all yet....and those controller prices holy shit!

To add something possitive: the possibily for local multiplayer between 8 switches with 4 controllers each could be amazing. Like a very 'nintendo-like' low effort lan party.

Edit: and in europe the console is 330 euros....thats just ugly, why do we always have to pay so much more, is europe overall richer or something? (Doesnt seem like that to me :p)

I thought about pre ordering a Switch just in case I decided I wanted one in March, but decided not to even bother. I'd love to play the new Zelda, but I'm not going to pay $300 for a console that will sit untouched for months at a time while I wait for a new Nintendo game to come out.

I feel like the best selling point for the Switch is the fact that most people completely skipped the Wii U. I can understand the fact that the crew is mostly underwhelmed by the Switch because they have remained on the Nintendo train because it's their job, but for most people, including myself there has been an enormous 6 year gap in which we have been out of the Nintendo ecosystem, and are just ready to get back in. Like Dan said, I doubt many people pre ordering it for day 1 are delusional enough to believe that it will rival Sony or Microsoft. We just want some damn Nintendo games, and they have laid out an awesome schedule to provide early adopters with a steady steam of just that.

1, 2, Switch looks cool I guess. I might have rather had a more fleshed out Wii sports type thing. Maybe it's coming, though. I don't know, I'm sort of happy and worried that they are leaning into motion controls again. Hopefully they learned that it's cool for some things and not for others.

If anything, I have to say the Switch can do a whole lot of things, and it will be interesting to see what happens.

One thing that made me want one is the return of standard ass, controller ass video games. I hope they know that people want that stuff too.
