E3 2017: Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle Is Even Weirder Than You Imagined

I am all about this.

And Grant Kirkhope is the composer!

I think this is the game to finally make me interested in the Switch.

Looks something like x-com meets mario meets rabbids? Ok. I'm in.

New XCom DLC is weird.

One of the most interesting games of E3 2017 is... a Rabbids game? That's a weird thing.

Maybe now is a good time to familiarize myself with XCOM.

I can't believe it's XCOM. I thought it was a regular JRPG.

hahah this is pretty crazy to me.

I just gotta say, I could not be less interested in this. There are so many good games like XCOM out there now, and this just does not have the charm of the Mario games I play. (Last ones being Color Splash and Galaxy 2.) There's a detachment you feel from your units in strategy games that doesn't mesh with the Mario sensibilities.

That being said, it will probably still be a good isometric strategy game.

I kinda disagree with this. A lot? A few like Xcom maybe sure. How many of them are good games? I'd say zero.

Man, the crew likes the rabbids? This feels like the contrarian Popplio thing all over again. Rabbids are exactly like minions! They're not good!

The gameplay was intriguing, though. I do like SRPGs, and it's a very different kind of Mario RPG.

Well this went from being a bad joke game to wtf I'm gonna have to buy this day 1.

I love when Ubisoft does weird shit and I also love it that Nintendo is not being super precious with their characters

I'm uncomfortable with my own intense interest in this.

I would be down for more weird crossovers if they had gameplay just as weird.

(And yes, technically I know this gameplay isn't weird because it's an variant of XCom combat, but that was honestly the last thing I expected Nintendo to do with it.)

so I have zero love for Mario (I'm a sonic guy) and I never heard of Rabbits before ...but wow this looks AWESOME.

I'm having a tough time reconciling my deep dislike of the rabbids and how fantastically insane this looks

Also this is probably more bitterness than anything, but blown away that Miyamoto would be cool with this and yet won't let Paper Mario even have unique characters.

Some of the teamwork stuff they showed looked really cool & novel. Hope it turns out as good as this first impression!

Did you ever play Hard West? Is that game any good?

@arbitrarywater: Haven't played it myself but I remember doing some research into it when trying to decide whether to buy it or not and I can't recall right now what it was but there were some significant one or two things that made me give it a pass.

Yeah, it's $5 on Steam right now, but some of the reception to it has given me pause.

If this game has a decent level of difficulty, this might have sold me on a switch.

Giving T.Hawk a gun is one thing but Mario is just unacceptable.

I'll play this in handheld mode with the volume off a lot.

The more i think about this , the less excited i get.

the best moments in Xcom are when you find yourself in a hard place and make the best possible choices to end up with a succesful mission.

Nintendo makes accessible games that are not very hard. Mario won't die forever neither. And you won't have a squad of 10 guys on the field. How much fun will a tactical RPG be when the game is not difficult enough? When there's nothing to lose?

That said, i do like the style a lot and i hope the game turns out great. The combo's look promising.

Best thing from E3 so far. This looks bananas and I'm into it. Lets hope they nail the gameplay.

There are a lot of turn based strategy games but they are lower production value 2D stuff and that sort of thing (Battle Brothers, Expeditions: Conquistador and Vikings are some examples). That's fine but it's far different to get this treatment. There are not many games out there like this at all.

I haven't played Hard West either, even as a genre fan. I heard it was structured in a weird way.

I really like the look of the strategy in this game. A cool blend of X-Com + Disgaea.

Sign me up. Also, buy me a Switch please.

Yes. Glad to see Nintendo finally loosening up a bit. Also allowing Link to be in Skyrim is another example.

I'm low key hyped. I love XCOMs battle design, but my wife doesn't like the theme. This though, this could be the bridge!

Now I just need more details on the meta game.

Nothing about the premise really seemed appealing to me, but after watching that trailer it actually looks pretty interesting. Or has the potential to be at least.

@tennmuerti: The stand outs to me were Invisible Inc and Valkyrie Chronicles (came out on PC), in addition to the XComs. That plus the other isometric RPGs, Tyranny, Numenera, really scratched that itch for me. There are enough.

And really, my point was more the rest of the comment anyway.

@decaped: Some of those are decent games indeed but they're all very different formulas from Xcom especially in terms of strategic gameplay and the last few are a different genre entirely :P

Valkyria Chronicles probably comes closest but that's slim pickings in 5 years especially with it's imo fairly simple tactical layer.

How did everyone get the idea it was XCOM based on that video? I loooooooooooooove XCOM and have dropped 100s of hours in the several iterations of it. I would totally play a Mario+weird-looking creatures XCOM game. I looked at this video and had no connection in my mind at all. Everyone is just discovering guns and looking happy.

Did I miss the key frames? Or are people bringing more context to this than just the video?

If you would have told me before E3 that this would be one of my favorite things out of the show, I would have called you crazy.

@leraa: For me it's the turn based shooter with the cover mechanic. And it looks like it also shows you the range of your movement in a blue color not unlike X-Com.

@lanechanger, I see what you are saying. I have since seen some more videos and heard people talking about it in those terms and it's all starting to make sense... Imma play it.
