The plot follows Agatha Christie regular, detective Hercule Poirot.  He has boarded a small river cruise ship with a cast of characters including the ill-fated lovers Jacqueline de Bellefort and Simon Doyle, Bellefort's best friend Linnet Ridgeway, the maid Louise Bourget, Linnet's lawyer Andrew Pennington, and the wealthy heiress Marie Van Schuyler (to name a few).  As is prone to happen in an Agatha Christie mystery, a murder takes place and the story takes off from there.
