A Few Words About Unfinished

You might see a different tag on some videos around here. Here's what's up.

If I put a photo of myself here, it's almost like a proper
If I put a photo of myself here, it's almost like a proper "Letter from the Editor" or something, right?

There's a real inflexibility that comes with the term "Quick Look." It actually wasn't always that way, but now that we've been putting those words in front of videos for over five years, there's something of an expectation about what, exactly, a Quick Look is.

For starters, they aren't quick. At least, they aren't anymore. They're usually a solid chunk of a game, sometimes crossing the one-hour mark. That's pretty weird when you consider that the first few of these were around 15 minutes. With that in mind, a game needs to have that significant chunk available before we can Quick Look it. That excludes a lot of things, assuming you're interested in having the term "Quick Look" mean something specific. For a time, we thought about just using that name for everything, regardless of the state of a given game. Preview versions of games, demos, and final products all fell under that umbrella. It's led to a little confusion over the years and created a bit of a reluctance on our part to record multiple Quick Looks for the same game. To help sidestep some of those (admittedly semantic) issues and give us a defined place for preview-style coverage, we're creating "Unfinished."

Unfinished is a spot for us to look at everything else, like Early Access games from Steam that consist of little more than a sandbox and a dream. Or very early (and very restricted) preview copies of games from major publishers. Maybe an occasional tech demo or two. And, potentially, video footage that would have fallen under the "Man, I Saw That!" or "What It Is" banners in the past. We want to keep it somewhat flexible without losing the meaning. But the general idea is that what we're looking at isn't full-fledged enough to carry an entire Quick Look just yet.

Actually, how about instead of writing all this, I just show you what Drew sent around to everyone else today?

Jeff and I were talking today about finally taking advantage of Early Access-type games. There's potentially a lot of content there and it feels weird not to acknowledge games that people are talking about in an official video capacity. They don't really fit into Quick Looks, and locking them behind a paywall in UPF is a little weird, so we need something new.

The name we came up with was Unfinished. It's universal so that we can include stuff outside of Steam, and it gets across that these games are not in their final state and are not necessarily subject to Quick Look-style treatment.

Naming it something completely new (and not like "Early Look" or something) also frees us up to be flexible with the format, which will be helpful since pre-release games are so wildly different in terms of content and scope. Maybe sometimes the video is only 7 min long. Maybe it's a series of hour-long videos. Maybe it's a one-person video. Maybe we do three games in one video with cameras and a set. Maybe we even incorporate editor impressions and screenshots from preview events that we weren't allowed to take footage at.

What do you guys think?

Drew

This actually led to about 14 emails back and forth as we decided what sort of title format we should use (like, should we put the version number in the headline? What happens when we don't know the version number?) and a few other details. But here's the short version: Look for coverage of Bugbear's Next Car Game to hit tomorrow and... well... I'm going to go see how far along Audiosurf 2 is at the moment.

I feel this will lead to confusion down the road. What if you want to cover a finished game, but you don't want to make it a quick look, are you going to make a third category? A fourth? I see it potentially becoming a slippery slope, trying to classify what you are doing now. For me, Quick Look covered any 'look" you want to give to any game, regardless of state. Now, trying to tie in a notion of 'game state' with the category of video is going to get messy down the road. Just my opinion

Great! I had been confused as to why games that are half broken or not finished get the same treatment as finished games, with the new category ill have the proper expectations before watching the video!

Great idea. I also like the name as it describes the games well and as a title it feels very Giant Bomb...ish.

Sounds good. There should be a category for just early access open world survival games considering how many there are lol.

Seems like a good way to let the guys open up about stuff they might otherwise hold off on. They always do great work so I wouldn't care what they called it. This seems more like it's a distinction they need. It will allow them to feel right about covering something.

The only thing I wish they'd separate are the developer/publisher/publicist guided stuff, calling that a Quicklook:EX never seems a good solution. Quick looks are often about Jeff seeing 'grimy textures', Brad moaning about framerate or Vinnie noticing a flaw and breaking a game wide open. Quicklook:EX's are neat in their way, but you can't expect full honesty from the guys while the room is packed with people generous enough to come out to show their game.

Can't wait to see where they're going with this.

I'm a big fan of the site but I've been broke for a while and without a subscription. It's been a bummer missing out on them playing some of these more off the wall, in development games so I agree, cool to make this an option and that will also free up UPF to not feel obligated to look at games like this.

Smart move. Early Access, Alpha, Beta, these are terms that are more common then ever in the videogame industry nowadays.

Looking forward to the multiple Unfinished: Star Citizen video's where Drew and Vinny show their hangar and ships. I feel those guys are interested in that game and this new video format is perfect for that!

This is good, but something is needed for going back to games as well (checking back with Battlefield 4 once it's supposedly "fixed," etc).

I think Putting the date is exactly how you approach this, Unfinished: game pre-alpha 1.34 is quite unwieldy .Putting the date also allows you to easily come back to a game say 6 months later after some major patches and show how much has changed in that timeframe rather than between v.5 - v.8, and of course people who care could lookup the notes themselves for a detailed log. The concept of looking at Unfinished games is pretty cool idea especially how popular alot of these games are this last year.

Any reason for more content is good!

And even when you're doing buggy/bad/dumb games, they'll still make for entertaining videos even when the games themselves aren't that good :)

Simple solution to a simple problem. I like it.

What's hilarious about this is that, they said they would never do preview coverage on the site, and yet now because of early access as a trend, games are being sold as public unfinished previews, and they're forced to do preview coverage again.

Neat idea. Gives you guys some flexibility during the slow months of releases. To be honest all this early access nonsense on Steam makes me think that we need a Steam Redlight. As in a way for users to say "No don't put this game out yet! It's broken as fuck!".

Always glad to see more content, just surprised there was such a fuss over the name. I don't think there would've been anything wrong with using the quick look moniker, someone would probably chime in with a "this game is way far from finished" during the quick look and that'd be all I'd need to know. Why do I hear Brad saying that in my head, that's the bigger question.

Pretty much sums up how I feel also. Hope to see some cool stuff here. I hope Project Zomboid gets a look as that game is kind of cool.
