Amy Developer Asks: “Do You Want To Pay Less?”

You know, I'll have to think about my answer to that one for a while.

Amy is also confused why you would ask consumers if they would like to pay less.
Amy is also confused why you would ask consumers if they would like to pay less.

You’re right to be confused by the above headline. Heck, I still am, but here's the bottom line: who wants to pay more for anything?

Amy is an interesting looking (and hopefully scary) horror game arriving next week on Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network from developer VectorCell and publisher Lexis Numérique. As it stands, the game would be several dollars more on PSN than it would be on XBLA, and understandably, people complained.

The response was to poll potential consumers about the problem.

Amy would be 800 Microsoft Points ($10) on XBLA and $12.99 on PSN. The poll asks users if $12.99, nearly $3 more, “is a good [price].” Take a wild guess at the results.

Lexis Numérique CEO José Sanchis explained the difference in a press release, citing Microsoft’s “points” system as the reason for the price discrepency. Points have the same value worldwide, even if actual currency values are not the same. Sanchis points to 800 Points being $10 in the US, but 10 Euros overseas--or $12.8.

“Because we didn’t explain the situation, we understand the reaction of certain US PSN gamers who don’t understand why they should pay a little bit more than their friends who play on XBLA,” said Numérique.

The poll stands at 464 votes, as of this writing, with 71% voting in favor of changing the PSN price.

“Because we value the opinion of the community, we commit to apply the voters’ decision,” he continued.

If users demand the price should be changed, it will be changed. If that happens, and there’s no reason to think it won’t, the PSN release will be pushed back a week, as the change ripples through Sony. The XBLA version would still come out next week, however, as it currently has the lower price, and the poll would not impact it either way.

It's actually NOT ~13€ over here if you use your brain and buy codes online instead of directly on the console.

So... $3 is a lot to some people? I mean, a regular video game is $85 here in Sweden because of retarded "$60=€60" bullshit. I feel there is bigger fish to fry than a tiny XBLA game.

I hear you. I haven't actually bought a game for some months now, and when my PS3 died over a year ago, I didn't bother getting a new one. Gaming is simply too expensive for a student couple renting an apartment and cooking their own food. A game is between $90 and $100, and a new PS3 is $481 for the most basic package. I don't actually know anyone in my situation who has bought any "extras" for gaming, such as a 3DS, Kinect or such. In Iceland, that's a serious goddamn investment.

I'm surprised the points cost the same worldwide?.. I guess that's pretty cool for lower currency countries. As a dual console owner, always feels like PSN users get the short straws which is unfair. I'm in no rush so I'll wait for the pricing to be concrete before making the purchase, esp. as Sony has a history of making up for it's mistakes.

They should put their game out on Steam as well, where a price change won't get any delay at all, let alone a week.

And also so that I can play it. ;)

You price match by region, simple as that.

I am kind of shocked that XBL prices are global, but whatever.

Maybe there is some money to be made buying MS points in in cash and selling them in Europe at a small profit margin.

Points are region locked.

XBL prices being global is a good thing, means we don't get screwed over as much (See prices of On demand games for an example of this...), the exchange rate changing constantly is something Microsoft don't need to really worry about as it'll always be the same price for people in the same reason so there's no difference in that respect. On top of that in the UK at least it's very easy to buy points online for less than there worth (For both PSN and XBL) so you can end up covering most the difference.

There are a lot of problems with the points system, the prices in points of items being global is not one of these problems.

Why not less? They probably cover costs from all the sales they'd get. IE Bastion during the Steam Sale. Good game, but not something people wanted to shell out $15 for.

Kind of related but inverted story, GOG have tried to be kind of sane and customer friendly with their pricing, not buying into the ridiculous $1=1€=2AUD stuff, or even any kind of regional pricing. Apparently them doing this with The Witcher 2, offering the game at the same price (and uncensored) to everybody, whether they were european, american or australian, caused a shitstorm, and they've now been forced by court to implement Geo-IP and regional pricing based on the customers reported location so the retail publishers and stores can keep charging twice or more than the reasonable price people in the US would get without going out of business.

Hell yes, I am biased, but there's one thing if the developers and distributors want to fuck their customers over, and hopefully get reduced sales as a result (though that rarely happens) - and an entirely different thing when they try to keep the customer's best in mind, like GOG did, but get sued for it.

They're not complaining about paying thirteen dollars for a game, they're complaining about having to pay more for the same game because their system of choice uses plain currency rather than space bucks. Also take the price of the game on 360, the three dollar increase is almost 1/3 of the base price.

The worst part is that is was supposed to be a PS3 exclusive and then they dropped the higher price point on Playstation gamers. No wonder people were upset.

I'm pretty sure people aren't complaining about the $13; they're complaining about the price disparity between the XBLA and PSN versions. As they should be; charging two different prices for the same exact product is just bizarre.

Edit:

Also, in the end the developer set that price because he bought into the same dollar=euro nonsense like every other big publisher. I don't see why he's being defended here.

It isnt the xbox live owners who are complaining, its the Playstation owners, who get the crap you and i get from xbox live for free, or they get it in plus.

Frankly i don't give a hoot about such little money. Use the extra money to make a demo so i can decide whether i want it, then the question of $10 or $13 won't be an issue. Kudos for not shafting Europeans for f*cking once, though.

Brilliant is a bit strong I feel personally, I won't care about this game till I hear about in action. But PenguinDust is 100% correct about his second statement, and perhaps he is right if the dev mainly cares about name recognition. But I could also hear of this game later after trail by fire and recognize it by name as sucky..we will see.

Are they having a hard time negotiating a lower price with Sony or something?
Is this like a "See! We told you it should be lower!" thing?

Unless it's just a marketing thing, this is dumb.

Also I hope this is a horror game, cos that'd explain why this kid is so fucking scary.

By this I don't mean sequels. I hate sequels. A sequel can be nice in a story driven game, but just the one, cliff hangers and open ended stories with the hidden title card "SEQUEL?" after the credits just makes me feel dirty and think less of the developer. I'm not stupid, they need to make money, but they don't need to throw that fact in my face, I'm much happier thinking they wanted to create something for our enjoyment, and that the money we pay for the game as well as DLC, shows how much we appreciate that.

This is how I feel about it as well. Well said.

I saw this story crop up on a few gaming blogs over the last few days... and was immediately baffled as to why this game in particular was suddenly held up as the poster-child for this "pricing difference" issue

This has been going on for YEARS... with just about every cross platform downloadable game released

I have ALWAYS bought my downloadable games on Xbox rather than PS3 for exactly this reason, because i've always been aware that the Microsoft points system works out at an average of £3 to £5 cheaper per game

For me, it's not just $3, it's the principle. If they can get away with it, other developers/publishers will follow suit. Look at XBLA's price change from 800 to 1200 points, project $10, etc. Don't stand for this!
