Area Man Visits Largish Website, Chuckles

A new installment of business and engineering updates from Dave.

On this episode of Building a Bomb, Dave shaves his hobo beard.
On this episode of Building a Bomb, Dave shaves his hobo beard.

You know, it's a funny thing trying to run largish web sites these days. To be honest it's weird just saying the word largish, but that's what Whiskey Media is certainly creeping towards. That's not to say it's REALLY BIG, or HUGE, but it's definitely better than we expected. There is no lack of giddy nostalgia when I look back on how I ended up at what became Whiskey Media--walking into Jeff's house in Petaluma, Mel's Diner for breakfast with Shelby, or farther back to a know-it-all kid that dropped out of college because he was spending too much time building websites. I certainly didn't think this was possible. This silly website, where a group of editors often huddle around a red phone waiting for you to call a number and make the red light blink--in much the same way you guys wait for a new something to pop up on the homepage. No, I certainly didn't see that coming.

It hasn't all been sunshine though. On the business end of the sites we argue like opinionated parents about what you, the collective group of users, want to see and what services we can provide. Should we tell you everything? What if we tell you something that freaks you out so much you run away and never come back? God forbid, what if one of you runs away and gets some girl pregnant. You get the point. There are lots of fights about you. Almost like parents, we try to make the best decisions we can to build a business that's healthy and sustainable and we try not to make too many mistakes along the way. While we have made some mistakes and unpopular decisions, we've always tried to be extremely honest and up front about them and the reasons we made them. A biz dude might even say we've been transparent. Uggh.

Continuing that transparency I'm announcing two fairly major things we're launching on the engineering / business side of the sites that will go into effect for everyone who isn't a premium member later today.

  1. We've partnered with Meebo to deliver their IM chat bar across our sites. This helps us sell high-value advertising that frankly, we have no internal infrastructure to do ourselves. They've been really easy to work with and it fills a gap in our company. As an honest tech company, they've made it easy to hide the bar if you don't like it.
  2. Over the next couple weeks we'll be switching the video player that anyone who isn't a premium member sees to YouTube. This will save us some money on bandwidth and let us take advantage of YouTube's ad sales network, but most importantly it will increase our visibility on YouTube and introduce more people to our sites.

We're excited about both of these changes. I can tell you that one of our main goals for the next couple of years is exposing a larger audience to our unique brand of content. I think we're going to bring a lot of new users to the sites through YouTube, Boxee and Roku that may not have heard of us. The bandwidth off-load for our increasingly mis-named, hour-long Quick Looks is nothing to sneeze at either, but really that's just a secondary win for what continues to be a frugal, growing business. We made both of these deals to help grow Whiskey larger.

Again, if you're a premium member (monthly or yearly), neither of these things will affect you, unless you want them to. They're optional features you can turn on or off as you please in your profile settings page. You can assume this is all a planned attempt to force you into finally subscribing, but our primary motive is to help us grow our largish sites into even largish-er sites.

And that's the funny thing about running largish websites, they always feel small no matter how big they get. We might need a second big red phone next year.

so watching QL's on YouTube will be a 10 part endeavor? I don't think I can deal with the comment section there. I guess that is a good thing seeing as I don't post there. Seems really weird to be using a game site and then having to watch YouTube for content. No thanks.

You don't have to watch the videos on YouTube. And the videos aren't going to be split up at all.

Interesting idea going full on with Youtube.  I'm a subscriber, but I can't see that as being a negative.

Hmm doesn't affect me directly cause I subscribe but like everyone who subscribers I want Whiskey sites to succeed and get as much exposure as possible so hopefully non-subs won't mind these changes.

The content here IS special. And you pay to support them, not to access content. The premium content they do offer is a sort of "Thanks" for supporting them.

@louiedog: They're being greedy. Again. And I don't want to support them after they deprive non paying users from things, as if they think those things are so great that you need to pay for it, which are actually shit that isn't worth it in the first place and then fuck them over once again. I don't care if they're being "transparent" assholes, they're still being assholes.

If by "being greedy" you actually mean "trying to not go out of business", then yes, they are "being greedy".

I'm going to say it now: The Meebo bar is frankly horrible and although I can hide it, I still dislike it. It just feels cheap and it devalues the Whiskey Media brand. At first I actually thought it was some kind of adware which had installed itself on my machine (which it kind of is). Other than that, I can see why these changes were made.

But? Didn't you say that what's important is that you have relevant ads? I don't know, it seems little bit weird. But hey, I'm premium since day one! Keep up the great work!

Wow, this is certainly interesting. I suppose the philosophy of not wanting to take away from the non-premium users faced a hard reality of sorts... I found it hard to believe and a bit idealisitic to expect a non-subscriber's features to not change, apart from an ad or two.

Well I'll definitely keep an eye out for the changes, but please keep the Youtube page up to date if you're going to change the video player to Youtube!

For everyone who is worried that the videos will need to be split on youtube, fear not. Here is proof that videos can be up to 10 hours for people who aren't 14-year-old food reviewers using webcams in their bedrooms.

At first I wanted to be pissed off, but then I decided to stop and think about it for a few second and yeah, I agree with you. I will sometimes have weird issues with Giant Bomb's video player. The first video player was by far the best. The rest... not so much.

@louiedog: HURR. I'm not talking about these changes, I'm talking about the subscription model in general, and the stupid things they do to non-paying members. They already act like their service is amazing, but it really just gives you shit that any other site that isn't desperate for money gives for free, and then they continue to do things like this to artificially take features away and make people subscribe because they are yet again increasing the ads and giving you a worse option for video playback, which just so happens to save them money.

As a consumer, I'm obviously not thrilled about the meebo bar thing. But as a fan of Giant Bomb and WM in general, I understand the need for it and am really happy you were able to find a solution that is really unobtrusive.

I appreciate the consideration you guys always give us when handling the business side of WM.

Also, YouTube is fine, but I'm going to flag all the video uploads if there isn't at least a paragraph of text with them.

Ouch, I'm a member so it doesn't affect me but a LOT of people don't have access to Youtube at work and if we're being honest that's where a lot of typical web browsing happens. I know if I wasn't a member I would be hosed on this change, and probably wouldn't spend much time watching Whiskey Videos just because (and this sounds horrible) have more time to watch the videos at work during lunch hours or when I'm working in a database or sitting on hold for someone. By the time I get home in the evening I maybe spend an hour surfing the web, which definitely isn't near enough time to even watch GB videos let alone the whole company's content.

Just something I hope was considered.

Oh I remember Jeff saying on Formspring that they were working on something that would allow them to have HD trailers on the site. I guess this is it. My thoughts on the changes are all positive. I believe that the Youtube player is much better than FlowPlayer as I don't have to choose between Progressive and Streaming. I can have them all. And the Meebo bar was easily disabled so no problem there. Glad the sites are finally gonna get some good ad revenue.

I really feel I am privileged to access a lot of your free content, so I don't mind subbing to get what I used to get for free.

Having said that, I agree on the Meebo bar looking very cheap and out-of-place in an otherwise so stylish an robust website. It's strongly off-putting, although one click is all it takes to remove it.

Sounds good to me. Honestly, in my mind it's all about what keeps Whiskey around. As long as you guys stay honest about your intentions, I am all for trying to expand. After all, this is a business. What I will do though, is buy my little brother who also visits this site a yearly membership as a stocking stuff this Xmas so he doesn't have to worry about anything looking different for him.

"I'm not talking about these changes" and then "continue to do things like this to artificially take features away" Get it straight. You keep going back and forth and acting like I'm an idiot for trying to figure out if you're talking about the subscription features or these changes. You keep talking about both but claim otherwise.

What are they taking away? They are changing the video player. They are not removing content. Oh no. They are increasing revenue and decreasing costs! The horrors! How greedy since I know for a fact that they're all millionaires trying to stick it to me. We are the 99% guys, let's occupy Whiskey Media! I'm going to visit that other video game website with all of the good content that does charge for a subscription and doesn't force me to see ads I don't like.

Will using YouTube's video player launch the YouTube app on i devices? I view a lot of GiantBomb through my iPod Touch (typing this for example) and having to switch between YouTube and Safari would be a pretty shit experience. I understand this is probably a fairly small number the audience affected but it's something for them to consider.

I happen to have a youtube account with monetisation enabled and from what I can see they won't be allowed to put ads on their videos since they mostly consist of footage of other people's work with commentary.

This is basically what it says when you want to monetise a video:

Before changing your monetisation options, please tell us about your video. Does your video contain the following content? (Select all that apply)

Graphics and pictures (including photographs and artwork)

Film or TV visuals

Video game or software visuals

Performances (including concerts, events and shows)

Music (including lyrics, cover songs and background music)

Please describe your content below. If you answered "Yes" to any of the above, please make sure that you include details about your ownership of the necessary rights or explicit permission to use all video material commercially. You must possess all the necessary distribution rights for all content (including music) in the video. (1,000-character limit)* (Required)

Whiskey Media is da bomb! I appreciate the heads up.

I won't even see these changes but hopefully they bring more people into the fold and help the sites make some moolah.
