As Expected, Apple Unveils a New iPad, Which Plays Video Games, Hence Why We Are Mentioning it Here

Epic Games and Namco show off some new gaming apps for Apple's new iPad, which is actually just called the new iPad for some reason.

We all knew it was going to happen, specifically because Apple pretty much said it was going to happen when they announced that they were having a press conference today, but that makes today's news of a brand spanking new iPad device no less thrilling for the something like a bajilliondy people out there who consume expensive Apple hardware like most people blow through toilet paper. I'm looking at you, Gary Whitta.

Yup. That sure is a new iPad.
Yup. That sure is a new iPad.

The new iPad--which, by the way, it is apparently literally called, in lieu of the iPad 3 or iPad HD names we'd seen kicked around--will use the oft-rumored retinal display, and features a pixel resolution of 2048x1536--meaning it's essentially 4x the resolution of the existing iPad and likely a higher resolution than your TV or computer monitor. The new iPad uses Apple's AX5 CPU/GPU combo, featuring quad-core graphics, though is still based on the Cortex A9, apparently. To put that in terms people who don't spend their entire day reading tech blogs might understand: it's got a real purdy screen and it's made out of GOES FAST.

As per usual, the device will come in twelve different models split across wi-fi only and network capable categories, sizes, and colors. This time, the iPad will support 4G LTE networks from both AT&T and Verizon. Pricing for the different devices ranges from $499 to $699 for the wi-fi only models, and the 4G LTE models will range between $629 and $829, depending on hard drive size. All of this will be available to those who pre-order or feel like standing outside of an Apple store for the next week and a half on March 16. The rest of us normal people will probably buy one a few months after that.

And yes, they even showed games. First up was Namco showing off its new flight simulator, a tragically Kenny Rogers-bereft game called Sky Gamblers. What little was shown of the game offered up something that looked a bit like a slightly down-res'd Ace Combat game, with all sorts of dogfighting action that managed to not look like an incredible chore to control...at least from a distance.

Next up was Mike Capps from Epic Games to show off another Infinity Blade thing, because honestly, why else would Mike Capps be there? Mike Capps showing Infinity Blade is the Apple conference equivalent of Punxsutawny Phil seeing his shadow every February.

It's got dungeons.
It's got dungeons.

This new Infinity Blade thing, by the way, is called Infinity Blade: Dungeons. It tasks the player with creating the "ultimate weapon" (presumably the titular blade) and also apparently features dungeons. You can see a picture snapped of the game in action that I stole from Engadget directly to the left of this paragraph.

As interesting as Infinity Blade: Dungeons looks (it does look quite sharp), the most intriguing thing to come out of Capps' appearance was his assertion that the new iPad would have more memory and higher resolution than either the Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3, which sounds, quite frankly, insane, but according to resident Whiskey tech guy Will Smith--who may or may not have edited this post in an attempt to make my feeble attempt at tech blogging decipherable--it's 100% true. I'm sure he'll have a more detailed explanation of why over on Tested, which is probably where you think a post like this belongs anyway. [Ed: And here that very post is!]

So, there you have it. There is a new iPad. It looks neat, and still plays games. See you all next year!

I don't believe that they could make a game for the IPad that would incentivise me to buy the IPad for it.

I got my Kindle Fire, thank you.

I would've liked it to be more like the 16:9 aspect ratio, that thing is kind of square for what I would've used it for =/

I guess if you consider mobile games on the DS or Vita "games" you kind of have to consider the smart phone games "games" as well. I view all mobile games as second tier gaming. PC's and consoles are Tier 1. DS, Vita, Smart phones Tier 2 and Facebook and flash games are tier 3.

I play a lot of mobile games, but that's because they are always there, on my phone. Which makes them as relevant as any other mobile games IMHO. Really no doubt that they are games, just not as good as consoles and PC games, for the most part. No reason to shun JUST smart-phone/tablet games if you're already covering the crap that's on DS and Vita.

Some of my favorite games are for handhelds, and there is a definitive gap in quality between most iPad games and games built for dedicated handhelds. There's no reason a PC or console game is any better by definition than a handheld game.

Don't care it's on the site. I care that Apple is trolling everyone and no one cares. 3 version of the ipad in what? 3 years? Yea.... like they didn't hold back this stuff on the ipad 2 to make sure 3 had some new stuff and they held back stuff from 3 so they'd have new stuff for 4. It's all BS.

I don't really care about apple stories. I care about nintendo stories that mention apple for no reason other than to mention how popular apple is. Happy with my iPad 2. It's a portable web browser and video watching device for me, I occasionally play jet pack joyride on it or dodonpachi, but games are a an afterthought. Vita/3ds have much better gaming experiences.

@TehFlan: I should probably have said more complex rather than better. And the importance of complexity depends very much on the player. For me, mobile games with low complexity are a plus. Games like Tiny Wings and board games are awesome for handhelds, while many-hour-long rpg's are games I'd never touch on handhelds. Just an ergonomic nightmare doing 8 hour gaming sessions with my neck all bent over.

You may be interested in this enlightening article I saw on 1UP that basically helped me articulate why I sometimes like portable games better than console games. They're not as light and cheapy as phone games or even XBLA games usually are, but they don't have the lavish budgets of Call of Duty or Mass Effect. Therefore, "mid-tier" games, not saying anything about the quality but the aim.

I will eat my hat if this can play any demanding games at native resolution. The 360 and PS3 can barely play games at 720p (mist games are sub-HD) and the Vita only has 544p and it still has several games running at sub-native resolutions. How can a tablet play at 1536p when not even my PC could play any demanding game in that resolution?

There are an astounding amount of short-sighted individuals here complaining because Giant Bomb has iPad coverage.

Do I own a 360? Do I own a 3DS or a Vita? Nope.

Do I think any of those systems are worth their MSRP? Not really.

Do I give a shit whether or not GB cover's them? Fuck no.

How can this possibly detract from your use of the site? How can this offend you in any way? Don't click the link, idiot. There will always be a group of elitist assholes above you elitists assholes that think gaming should only exist on a PC, or maybe in arcade cabinets. They are wrong, and so are you. And for those threatening to go elsewhere for your gaming related media, good fucking riddance.

I'm glad we have coverage. One of the only reasons I now visit IGN (urk) is that they have iPhone game reviews and deals listed. Though I suppose I should just stick to TouchArcade for that...

Anyway, it's totally a legit gaming device. It just does tons of other stuff which...hey oh, so does the precious Vita. And the 3DS. So I think you'll all survive.

Though it's still balls overpriced. My Kindle Fire kind of sucks but it still plays emulators (after Rooting it).

I could care less if this thing can run at better resolution and has more memory than the 360 and PS3...first of all how old are those systems by now?  A device developed 7 years later has better resolution???

Sarcasm aside, just like the kinect cannot produce any great games without the use of an actual controller neither can an Ipad.  It locks you into casual gaming, or gaming with the worst controls possible.  Why don't they just make a 1st party controller for this?  Go over to tested's website and look at any of their app of the day games and see if you can find a serious game where they don't say they controls are shit.

I'm still willing to wait another year on one of these until the next "new" model comes out. I wouldn't mind an Ipad but I'd want at least 32 gigs and I won't spend over $400 for one. So, I'll continue to wait until something reasonably priced with my desired specs is available. I just don't need one right now. Of course, if something doesn't appear before the release of the next generation of consoles, then Apple is out of luck for my money.

This is completely pointless, who cares about a screen that small with that high resolution? TVs are 1080p and they're fine, hell even the text on PC is small on a 32" TV at 1080p, and it's hard to differenciate movies at 720p and 1080p at that size.

I think Apple just did this because they can, all they're going to get is stuff that doesn't run at that resolution and thus will look like crap.

And yes Alex, this article is marginally related to videogames, there are some for iPad, but cmon, cmon.

Because you don't sit 15 inches from your TV. Have you seen the iPhone 3 vs the iPhone4? Same difference here. I have a first gen iPad and welcome the increased resolution, especially for reading.

I had really high hopes for the success of the Vita. And it's met them in every way except for market penetration. The DS never captured my interest, or the 3DS. The PSP did...but only until I tried the first FPS and felt crippled by the lack of a 2nd analog stick. I poo-poo'd talk of smart phones taking over portable gaming - the "portable" experiences are exactly what never interested me in gaming on a phone, let alone a DS.

But with Vita on a 5+ year cycle and tablets setting new benchmarks every year, along with the installed user base...the games will come. I don't see how Vita can survive. Throw a memory card slot on an iPad along with a console controller or a Project Fiona like peripheral and...how can Vita survive?

Throw Bluetooth phone functionality on a tablet and...even better, tablet cases will be (are?) the new man-purse.

Too bad Apples refusal to add a memory card slot and a USB/Thunderbolt port on the iPad is as bad as Vita's $99 memory cards.

Screen resolution doesn't mean text size will be small.

It's not called "The New iPad" it says that because it's an iPad and it's NEW. There is nothing silly about it, the product is simply called "iPad/the iPad" can you really not work that one out? They are going back to the naming schemes without numbers, just like the iPod Touch, MacBook and the other iPods are named.

What is stupid, is that they are still calling the iPad 2 the iPad 2, and keeping it around with the new "iPad" way to confuse the average buyer, Apple.

Still pretending to know what you're talking about, huh? I'm not made of money, so I CAN'T buy an iPad. At current, I can't even afford a Vita. But when I do get the money, I'll have a better chance of getting a Vita than I will getting an iPad. I happen to think they're BOTH rather expensive, but one's cheaper than the other... care to guess which one? Anyone else would have understood by now. What's your excuse?

And who said anything about phones, genius?

To me, $500-800 is more valuable going toward a house down payment than to a shiny sometimes-Netflix viewer and occasional spur of the moment browser use device, that does some games. Count me in the group that hasn't really figured out the actual recreational need for a tablet.

Yesterday any story on any site about the ipad3 would generate extra traffic. Don't you want GB to make more from advertisers?

New ipad is fine, and cool, and all that stuff. But this story really upsets me because TV's and computer monitors are not getting that high resolution love. It's actually difficult to find a computer monitor higher resolution than 1080p, and when you do there's maybe 2-3 to choose from That is really sad to me.

Maybe I just want it on desktops because I do some graphic design, but I'm sure gamers would love that high resolution as well. It's simply crazy to me that tablets are getting love before desktop users. I only hope this leads to better big monitors.
