Borderlands 2 Is Officially a Thing

Gearbox's action RPG sequel gets this month's Game Informer cover, will be at PAX Prime and Gamescom.

Guess what, guys? There's going to be a second Borderlands game.

2K officially announced today that the sequel to Gearbox's breakout action role-playing shooter is very much in development, and will be headed to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in fiscal 2012 (translation: sometime after April next year).

No Caption Provided

In addition to the basic announcement, Game Informer revealed Borderlands 2 as its September cover exclusive, dropping a few details on what we can expect from the sequel.

Don’t expect just a couple bazillion more guns this time around. Gearbox is introducing new and more diverse environments, smarter and more powerful enemies, and an improved mission system capable of delivering a better story.

Borderlands 2 will get its official live debut to the world later this month at Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, and will also make its way to PAX Prime this year. Anyone heading to either of those shows that feels like letting out a big, honking squee of excitement right now will be forgiven for doing so. Just, you know...clean up your mess afterward, okay?

@Creamypies: But I was never talking about "in comparison to co-op". I was saying that I want the single player to be better, as I don't play co-op. You told me that criticism isn't fair since they focused on the co-op aspect of the game. What I'm saying is that since they supported SP in Borderlands, I'd want that aspect of the game improved for its sequel since that would be the part of the game I would experience.

No thanks. I was tricked into buying the first one and when I started playing it it was an unplayable, broken, and buggy POS. I refuse to give these guys another $60.

Great news to wake up to. Best announcement of the year as far as I'm concerned. I've been heavily playing borderlands for the past couple years, and can't wait for the sequel. Looking forward to more info. Until then, back to Borderlands 1 for now.

Having said that, I think it was perfectly fine as a single player experience.

Well I don't have others to play it with, so what's wrong with me wanting them to improve the experience for single player? I didn't think playing solo was fine and it was immensely boring. If developers will let players play single player, then they also need to take the time to make sure that their game is fun in that mode. If they don't want to support it, then they should just disable all players from playing single player.

Who said they don't want to support it? Supporting a mode, and focusing on a mode are two different things. The focus for Borderlands is multiplayer, so by default it's going to be a better experience in that mode. Left 4 Dead supports single player, but again, to get the most out of that game you have to play it in multiplayer. Unless you're an MMO, you have to have some sort of single player component.

Play with people on Giant Bomb? I'm sure a shit load of us will be playing that game when it eventually comes out.

Actually I liked playing Borderlands solo. Something about the lonliness/music, terrain and accomplishment based missions made solo very appealing. I sunk a fukton of hours into Borderlands, did most of the dlc. I also got pretty flatassed bored by the end, so I hope they do think of the sp more(but at least allow for it) and improve other features. I'm into a Borderlands2, but I doubt I could ever play more Border. 1

Borderlands is not for everyone. It's kind of like JRPG, there's a devoted audience.

The story telling could be interesting given Anthony Birch is working on this game (one of the people from Hey Ash What Are You Playing?).

@Vendetta: I have very similar feelings. I love that game, but after beating it twice, I just got sick of it and can no longer even fathom playing borderlands again for even one hour.

Hopefully, by next year, I'll have an itch for more Borderlands...

I might get it if my friends get it. We played through the first one and found it way too easy with three people and kinda boring in parts. Hopefully the sequel can remedy some of that.

Yep.

On topic: Borderlands was a pretty dull. I think at this point basically any loot-driven RPG is just a big old turd to me though. I'm not at all excited about Diablo 3, since I feel the whole genre lends itself to a repetitive and empty experience.

More Borderlands can only be a good thing.

Slightly off-topic but it's weird that Eurogamer had a story that Borderlands 2 would be at Gamescom, which they got from an unnamed source, and a lot of games journalists and even Randy Pitchford were hating on them for it even though it was totally true.

Dear Gearbox,

Please auto-scoop loot. And include a button to buy max ammo. Oh and a shared vault that you can swap gear across your characters.

Besides those minor things, Borderlands was quite possibly the perfect game, for my money.

THIS.  I would like it if Borderlands 2 was better than the first one for solo players.  Maybe the first one was a great game for people who have dedicated playgroups on XBL or PSN, but trying to get into random games with random XBL douche-turds really turned me off to the first one.

Duder no offense but Playing Boderlands solo is like . . . Well its just a bad idea!

90% of the time I spent with the game was playing solo, mostly because I always had really bad lag issues online for some reason. I still had a blast with it.

I really liked the first one and played solo through it more than once (a rarity for me).  I just hope it's different enough from the original and from Id's Rage to reignite my interest in the franchise.
