Can A Website Make You Better At Headshots?

That's one of the ideas behind Activision's new Call of Duty subscription service.

A webpage posting a picture of a webpage that features an embedded video on it. And they said the Rapture wasn't real...

Though I always thought that Bungie's website did amazing things with Halo statistics, it was always held back a bit by the fact that I'm just not great at playing Halo against others. So it's always cool to see specifics on my play in Halo: Reach, ODST, Halo 3, and Halo 2, but it always sort of comes back with the same basic idea:

"You're kind of shitty at Halo, man."

That's fine. I can take it. The cycle of getting pretty good at something quickly only to never play it again once the review is written sort of comes with the territory in this job. But with all this data collecting, isn't there some way for the game to tell me what I'm doing wrong? Or what I need to be working on? That's the future potential for this sort of stat tracking, and it's one of the potential differentiators for Activision's similar service for Call of Duty called Call of Duty Elite.

Or, at least, Activision's claiming that Elite can make you a better player. The catch is that it isn't really showing much of this "teach you how to be better" potential. I saw an exhaustive presentation for what is, essentially, Activision's version of Bungie's free stats service, complete with personalized heatmaps, and a Steam-like setup that lets like-minded groups commune. "Improve" is even one of the three pillars of the service, which means it was sort of driven into our heads again and again by the presenters. But short of looking at those maps of levels and seeing where you die a lot, it didn't seem like the service was set up to actually systematically tell you what you're doing wrong. It lacks analysis. Even a basic "you need to work on aiming, your opponents are getting shots off on you 0.3 seconds before you're returning fire" would probably help. Instead, it appears that most of that advice is set to come from the community. The "improve" section of the Elite site currently shows maps of all the levels with a bit of descriptive text, as well as articles on every weapon and attachment in the game, which all strikes me as a little basic for the type of person who might be willing to spend time on a site devoted to Call of Duty stats.

== TEASER ==

Groups and clan support will also be present. Groups look similar to Steam groups in that they can be about anything, so they can be for fans of in-game characters to fans of football or Chevys or whatever. Clan support was talked about, but not really shown. It, along with most of Call of Duty Elite's features, will be integrated into Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 upon its release this November. But the service will also support Black Ops, and the stats that that game has been keeping since its launch last year will be present when Elite rolls out.

Elite will also have support for leagues and tournaments with prizes for top contestants. Some of these challenges won't require top play, though, with different categories like "best screenshot" or "best video clip." Another one listed the "Most Destroys" for Headquarters mode. Hopefully these goals will focus on team-oriented goals over personal goals, as it would be pretty annoying to have everyone on your team going for broke on some specific objective just to win a Jeep--which was one of the placeholder prizes shown on the work-in-progress version of the Elite site we were shown.

No Caption Provided

Activision's being really cagey about what will cost money and what will be free, and it seems like they actually haven't figured out where to erect the pay wall. Things like stats and groups will, from the sounds of things, probably be free to all players. Considering these services are done for free elsewhere, that's probably a good move. The other potentially interesting thing is that being an Elite member gives you all of the Modern Warfare 3 downloadable add-ons as they're released. That, it's safe to assume, will only be for people with paid accounts. So if we further assume that there will be three map packs released over MW3's lifespan, that's $45 of value right there. How much would you be willing to pay for something like this? Activision will only state that it will be "less than any comparable service." Considering that Bungie does stats for free on its shooters--and that's pretty comparable--I'm having a hard time seeing anything that makes Elite worth more than the raw cost of the map packs alone. Maybe getting all its DLC money up front, while you're still super excited about the game is enough. Activision's claiming that Elite is an evolving service that will grow over time, so maybe it'll have more going on that we were initially shown.

The good news is that nothing is being forced on you. If you want to buy Modern Warfare 3 and buy (or not buy) the map packs, you'll have roughly the same experience you've always had, but with the potential addition of deeper stats. That, of course, all depends on where Activision decides to drop its pay wall. There's nothing wrong with that. And if you're the type of person who absolutely has to have it all and wants in on tournaments and leagues and all that extra stuff, well, Activision will be ready to accept your payment details later this year.

Well, now that i know that Elite is mildly complex, i know it's gonna bomb because Call of Duty's hordes of fans are mostly superficial chumps who don't like reading or clicking on buttons that do things too much

What the hell were activision thinking, giving some sort of depth to this gadget? IF IT'S NOT SHALLOW NO ONE WILL USE IT

Some of this stuff sounds cool, but why would I pay for it?

Save the content subscription, these are all either the types of additions one would reasonably expect to be part of the package of a sequel (or the website of one, whatever), or it's stuff that other games offer for free.

And of course there's the ever present concern of where this is going.

I'm actually kind of interested in the free portion ($8 a month? I'd be on the fence about $8 a YEAR) but that video was painfully unfunny. Really, wow.

Hardcore COD fans will eat this up, no problem.  This is the crowd that spends $150 on garbage NVGs and $15 map packs.  Modern Warfare is one of the pioneers of $60 PC games.  They'll give subscribers some kind of in-game badge or custom skin that'll make the service irresistible.  These kinds of gamers only buy 1-3 games a year, they're willing to invest in those few games they really enjoy.

And credit goes where it's due:  Michael Pachter has been predicting a Call of Duty subscription service for a while now.  Everyone loves to give him shit when he's wrong, but here he called it.

Anyway, I still don't understand what you get out of this. Depending on how much it is, you're most likely just paying for the map packs up-front. Considering Call of Duty already costs roughly $60 a year, adding a monthly fee on to that is just a money grab by Activision. I understand they're a business, but they're a business that, from what I see on the outside, is out to destroy the gaming industry. They kill a popular franchise by releasing a new title every year, and then move on to the next big thing, rinse, repeat.

They've clearly been studying the Zune program for design inspiration in their CoD: Elite program. Very similar presentation.

Wait you mean the weapon stats that are 100% inacurate and misleading in all the latest CoD games?

I'll wait for a dude to open up and decode PC files for ACTUAL weapon stats.

If it's free then that's okay, but they still haven't addressed what is for pay in this service. Like booster packs for more XP, new skin files, or new weapons. Comparing it with Bungie is a good comparison but Activision is comparing this with Netflix which makes no sense.

That stat layout looks identical to the Bungie website but as long as its for free then its okay. I would never pay for something like what there describing though. I am not a big enough fan of COD multiplayer so there is no chance of me ever using this. If your really into to COD then it might be worth it. The map pack thing seems good as long as you keep the maps after you stop subscribing.

That video was terrible but the Elite logo looks kinda cool, so that something.

That doesn't seem like a lot for a subscription service. Sure, some hardcore clans will sign up but I'm worried that it won't have enough appeal to support the problem, and Activision will start giving "Elite" players a competitive advantage in order to induce more subscriptions (like 1.5x damage to all weapons, or a free killstreak reward at the beginning of each round -- that sort of thing).

I want to know if the candyasses who are saying, "Well now I am not gonna buy the game!!!" can even read.  This service is optional and not even required to play the game.  Any part of it!  All we knew about MW3 is still there and the game you expected to play is still there.  This is just extra like a map pack.  Its not even some shit like project 10 dollar.  And it also can be used with BLOPS.  So are you gonna be taking that game back to the store?
I think its a neat idea that will appeal to that select group of hardcore COD fans that Activision can still get a few dollars from.  Me?  I love the MW games and will get this one.  But I usually stop playing right before the first map pack comes out.  So they lose me by then.  But if people are willing to pay for more extra stuff, and god knows there are a lot of COD players out there who buy even the map packs day 1, well then let them.  They can offer more to them and I don't see how this affects you buying the game.  Because if you can buy the game knowing that a map pack will come out for it, then why can't you buy it knowing that stat tracking and prizes can be paid for too?

No. From the sounds of it, if you don't pay for it, you'll be in the part of the community without certain maps. Valves way of doing it, selling unnecessary items like Hats has worked extremely well. They're raking in dough from hats and all of us who dont want to spend money on things like that can continue playing.

Activision, you tried way too hard on this video to convince me that this is something worth paying for.  Bungie.net does stat tracking for free.

Of course, people will shell out cash for it.

But hey, I still can play multiplayer for free and that's all that matters.

So basically what bungie.NET and Killzone.com do?  Seriously, i'm good.  I don't know if I am even going to buy the next CoD, and this is a definite no.  I have not even bought map packs since the one they released for CoD4 and that was more or less a good will gesture and it was not ridiculously overpriced.

I really doubt this will work out as well as they're hoping. The only people who care about weapon statistics and clan support tend to be people smart enough to not pay eight goddamned dollars a month for such things. Oh my god, eight dollars a month- this can't be real. I refuse to believe even Activision would do this. It has to be some elaborate, self-aware prank. At least, that's what I'm telling myself tonight so I'll be able to sleep.

Well ill probably try it out for a little bit.  But really I don't think the people who play alot really need alot of the stuff this is offering.  I really don't think any of the info will make me play better.  It might help they people who like the game but just get frustrated because they die all the time.

@Jumbs: You won't get certain maps if you don't pay for them because that only applies to the map packs.  Jeff mentions it in the article.
