DJ Hero 2: If It Locks Up, Ditch A Friend

Weird bug plagues DJ Hero 2, here's a workaround.

Hey there, by now you may have seen our DJ Hero 2 Quick Look, where Brad and I "eff it up old-school" on a turntable and a microphone. That was our first experience with the final retail version of the game, and it locked up like three times while we were playing it, usually right at the end of the song.

It sounds like this was already corrected on the PlayStation 3, but over on the Xbox 360, if you're experiencing lockups at the end of every single song, it's probably because your friends list is full. Apparently there's some sort of issue related to the way the game pulls scores from your friends list and displays them in-game, and if you've got a full list, the whole game explodes! Cool, right?

Anyway, G4 bugged Activision about it and heard that a patch for the 360 version should be available by the end of the week. Until then, if you're looking to get busy on the decks and stuff, you need to either play offline or cut someone from your friends list. Consider yourself warned!

To be fair, probably because most people don't have 100 friends? QA probably doesn't think to test for it, because who has 100 friends?  The gaming press. That's who. "
Actually, most people I've played with have 100 friends, due to real life friends, tournaments, clans, and the like.  I have just over 80 at the moment, so it's not a totally unheard of thing to have 100 friends. "
QA work on Dev consoles, so they have their own connection to Live/PSN and cannot interact with the normal console network, which is why they don't have +100 friends on their QA console. Unless you specifically make and befriend 100 accounts, which is alot of work, you will never think of this. That and QA teams are very small generally speaking.

They need to test games on actual retail consoles more before they ship these games.

Bummer, but at least this is a pretty exclusive glitch, and fairly understandable that they didn't catch it. I wonder if 100 friends is just too much for the system to handle as it is right now? Weird, but glad the fix will be soon.

Have to agree, having a full friends list on a game that doesn't really have a heavy online multiplayer like CoD MW2, this has to be one of the strangest bugs I've heard of in a while.

this is an insanely odd little glitch. i have never wanted to have that many people on my friend's list anyway. unfortunately, the resultant  problem that I have is that i am almost always left with very few friends online and playing when i am available.

Good to hear they're patching it so soon but the game should never have gone out in that state in the first place.

So nobody who played this game had a full friends list you would think that at least one dev would be way into it. This is also something that should have come in QA, as testing weird scenarios like that is a basic part of the process.

On the bright side of this glitch, if you have XBox live, you'll get the patch and it'll be fixed. And if you don't have XBox live, you won't have 100 friends to worry about.

So this will be completely a nonissue once the patch comes out, which is really convenient. Unlike some game breaking bugs that screw over people who don't get patches *cough* Metroid Other M *cough*.

@TurboMan: Things like this are difficult to catch in a QA environment due to the nature of the bug. The game will have obviously been tested for online play, but the idea that they would have to test athis with a full friends list probably never entered the equation. You can bet that this will be part of the Activision certification process now...

@Duffyside: To be fair, it's not hard to add some one to your friend list and it's commitment free. It's probably not likely anyone have their friend list full with 100 actual/real friends. I'll be honest, I don't even have 100 friends irl.

I am a QA guy for MGS, and some of your guys comments are pretty whack.

You don't know that QA caught it and it was then decided to ship with the bug or postpone the fix to a patch. Also yes testing with a full friends list is very important and I have done it many times, it is something we think of, and it is a very believable scenario. Titles with leader boards are hit just as hard during testing as any other area of the game.

" I REALLY doubt that QA missed that. I work in QA (not for Activision) and this is one of the first thing we test when we get a new game (btw entering 70-75 friend codes on a Wii is not fun lol).   This looks more like a big Microsoft fail. I really can't understand how MS Cert missed that... "

I also doubt QA missed it. I would not blame MS as a whole and no comment on cert, that stuff is locked up.

It is a miracle any game gets to a polished state. Thanks and QA pours a lot out for themselves, haha : )

what about when xbox live gets updated to support 1000 friends?
Will the DJ Hero Turntable catch on fire while playing?

Actually, that sounds pretty Dope.
