EA Will Make All Your Star Wars Games Now

The publisher has struck a deal with Disney to grant them the exclusive license for the franchise.

Something tells me that, for a lot of you, EA was not the publisher you were looking for.
Something tells me that, for a lot of you, EA was not the publisher you were looking for.

Ever since Disney shuttered former all-things-Star Wars publisher LucasArts in the wake of its purchase of Lucasfilm, we have been left wondering who would be tasked with resuming production on the world's supply of Star Wars video games. Now we know the answer.

EA has stepped up and Jedi mind-tricked Disney (or, more likely, paid handsomely) for the exclusive license for all Star Wars games in the "core games" category. This means Disney will still have the license to produce its own games in the mobile, tablet, and online gaming categories. However, if you want to make a major console, handheld, or PC game with the words "Star" and "Wars" in the title, you'd best be working for an EA studio.

It would extra help if you worked for DICE, Visceral Games, or BioWare, as EA's announcement of the deal specifically cites these studios as the ones tasked with bringing more Star Wars video games into the world. BioWare, of course, already has experience working with the Star Wars brand, producing the original Knights of the Old Republic RPG games (though only developing the first one internally), as well as the Old Republic MMO, which is perhaps most notable for costing EA an exceptional amount of money. On a possibly related note, financial terms for this deal were not disclosed.

"Every developer dreams of creating games for the Star Wars universe,” said EA Labels President Frank Gibeau. "Now, we own the exclusive rights to those dreams," he did not add, but I imagine he thought to himself at least once.

We'll bring you more on this deal as it becomes available.

That line just reads so fucking scummy.

Holy shit. Is EA literally just run by demon corporate bureaucrats now?

Here's hoping KOTOR III is possible after TOR didn't do so well...hopeful cooler heads will prevail and they'll look at KOTOR I and the similar Mass Effect games for sales projections instead.

Whether this comment is in or out of context, I just hope they keep SWTOR going. That game is incredible, and I haven't paid anything for it yet. I am going to dish out money soon for perks, and it won't be reluctantly. I want to give them my money for SWTOR.

Huh... odd timing somewhat considering I just bought a bunch of Star Wars games during that May the 4th sale on steam. I guess if they make some new Star Wars games that I would actually want then I would have to buy them through Origin. Lazy I know, but its becoming difficult keeping these games together between floppys, cd-roms, and multiple drm platforms. I just wish some of this stuff could be a bit more centralized. #FirstWorldProblems

I really don't understand why people are so upset about it this, what was the last amazing star wars game? KoToR, which is easily 10 years old at this point. I personally liked Force unleashed 1, but that's easily 5 years ago. It's not like licensing games out to different companies was yielding great results every time, for every star wars lego you had 2-3 Kinect Star Wars. Someone was going to snatch this up and they had to be big, so that's who? EA, Activision, Ubisoft? There's not a lot of other companies with the money to support this franchise. So I'll chalk the reactions I'm seeing under generic internet rage.

Yeah I don't get it either. Of the realistic possibilities, EA is the one who has the studios (between Visceral, DICE and Bioware) that seem like they could best realize the different types of Star Wars games most people would want.

Hmmm, I think this could be ok. It's better than seeing Star Wars die completely. SWTOR was OK and hopefully 1313 will be put back on track. Idk, I'm not too bummed about this.

I'm excited to see what DICE, Visceral Games and BioWare are going to be doing. My hope is DICE will work on Battlefront 3, Visceral working on either 1313 or a Republic Commando game and have BioWare work on a new KoTR. I just hope EA doesn't push EVERYTHING we hate that they push on developers into the new games. I'll hold all real complaints until a year or two down-the-road until we see gameplay.

I'm always surprised that people haven't gotten bored of Star Wars by now. Luke Skywalker's story was great, but it's been 30 years since those films ended. I guess people are very interested in the expanded universe.

As much as people like to point to swtor and say it was a bad game. It isn't, it was good game but a bad mmo at launch. Now it's still a pretty good game and decent mmo. Still if wasn't an mmo in the first place it could have been something special. It was however a financial disaster in the sense that it probably broke even but just barely.

The possibility of a new Battlefront from the guys who pretty much invented that strain of FPS is very interesting. I liked Battlefront, but it always felt like sort of a knock off to me as a Battlefield fan.

There's only one thing I find odd. Does this rule out the possibility of Star Wars stuff ending up in Infinity?

Oh fuck...

I don't mean that entirely, but I don't know how I feel about this. I have enjoyed many EA titles in the past so this could go very well. Although EA can be complete assholes they are capable of making good games. Can I give them the benefit of the doubt? Well a proper KOTOR 3 is still a worthwhile dream, right Bioware? We'll just have to wait and see.

@penguindust: This is pretty much my exact reaction to this announcement. Everyone's predicting doom and gloom, but there we know literally nothing beyond the news that Visceral and DICE are working on new games. And to be honest, I'm excited to see what those studios do with. And I also have faith that BioWare can pull something off. They made the original KOTOR, after all, and many of the ideas that made that game great have persisted in some form another through the ME series (and Jade Empire!)

I like the way you think, good sir.

I can't poo-poo this idea until I see what they do with the license. I've had enough of The Force Unleashed and Lego Star Wars anyway. I know I am probably in the minority, but I had a really good time with SWTOR, so EA's already off to a good start in my book.

With a few qualified exceptions, Star Wars games have been hot garbage over the last decade. EA can only meet those standards or do better. Hell, maybe Bioware might make a Mass-Effect-style Star Wars game. I could dig that, I guess. I still won't buy it, though, as I don't buy EA's products anymore.

I'm disappointed that this is exclusive, and a lot of talent won't be able to utilize the licence, but I really don't think I could care much less.

I'd rather see a bunch of new (and good) Star Trek games, anyway.

Honestly? I can't think of a MAJOR (emphasis on that word) publisher who I'd rather see get this. Activision? 2K? I would've actually like to see what THQ could've done, but that's obviously not happenin'. Yeah, yeah, we all hate EA and all, but this isn't a terrible outcome.

I wonder, could Visceral make a Star Wars game that is dark and dreary like the first Dead Space was or have they been EA'd so much that all they would do is make a third person action game?

Easy to not be excited about a Star Wars game, because they're generally not that great and I'm not bothered about the franchise anymore. But with a good studio on the case..

I'd rather see 2143, but I'd still like to see what DICE can produce.

Agree. These are three great studios, lets give them the benefit of the doubt.

This.

I know it's popular to hate on EA but as a Star Wars fan, I'm willing to see what they can do with the license. Bioware, Visceral, and DICE are all solid studios. It's not like LucasArts games had a great track record in recent years. Although, I do hope Star Wars 1313 gets resurrected in some form. That did look promising.

Agree (good to see reasonable people are here).

I like the idea of 1313... it's be fun I'm sure as a linear game more or less but I'd love it if it was an open world crime title as well.

Jumping in with the agree-a-train.

These are good studios who have the potential to do cool shit with the Star Wars license. Not saying they will, but they most certainly have the potential. It's EA itself I don't care for, but we'll see how this goes... especially with whomever their new CEO is.

The president is Peter Moore AKA that guy that had the Halo 2 release date tattooed on his arm.

Which just proves that Peter is a badass who is willing to go to lengths most men don't even dare!
