Fable II - No Online Co-Op At Launch

Online co-op for Lionhead's latest will be patched in shortly after launch.

If you stand here long enough, you'll eventually be able to download a patch and play with a friend.
If you stand here long enough, you'll eventually be able to download a patch and play with a friend.
Microsoft's Gamerscore Blog updated today with information that even though the game has gone gold, Fable II is still being developed, and the ability for online co-operative play won't be in the game at launch.

This seems like an extremely temporary setback, as Microsoft's Sara "DirtyDiva" Nicholson is quick to mention that the update should be available within the first week of the game's launch. The glowing orbs that represent your friends in-game will still show, however, and you'll be able to trade with those players right away.

Still... considering this game seems to have gone gold like 19 times already, isn't it completely insane that the game is shipping in an unfinished state? Or is that just me?

Either way, Fable II will be in stores on October 21.

As disappointed as I am, coop is not a feature that I even dreamed would be in Fable 2 a year or so ago. It sucks that it won't be there at the start, but for an RPG to have coop in the first place is still pretty cool. I'm not trying to excuse this, but at the same time this seems like a bonus in the first place (like MP in  MGS4). I wish it was shipping with the game, but I wasn't buying Fable 2 for its coop to begin with. I am looking forward to finishing the game though and then going back through with a friend.

The fact that the game isn't shipping in complete format is apalling, but lack of instant co-op out of the box doesn't really bug me.  The fact that it's coming within a week of the game's release is fine.  But still, shipping a game when it's not finished?  Come on, that's bush league.

This game (which i'm really looking forward to) is going to get review scores before it has an online co op mode...

and if it turns out to be really laggy and the animations don't catch up...basically if it turns out to be sub par it'll get away with that in terms of it's critical reception

For me this smells like very bad news and i will definately be waiting to hear how it plays in co op before making a purchase

Fable 2 is really ambitious... It's going to be a rocky lauch... But I have faith that Lionhead will deliver another incredible game.

This is crazy, how can a publisher ship an unfinished product?

I don't  understand all the comments asking why they don't just wait until it's ready to ship the game. You all seem to be fairly sophisticated gamers, can't you understand the corporate side of the equation? Fable 2 needs to ship during the holiday season, and Microsoft has already made their marketing materials and ad buys based on the October 21 release date. Lionshead thought they'd get the coop worked out in time, they didn't, so they're patching it in. Not really that hard to understand. And as evidenced by Bungie's dropping online coop at the last minute in Halo 2, and Silicon Knights halving the coop in Too Human at the last minute, obviously coop is a tricky thing to get right. It's a tad bit disappointing, but I'm sure there's enough to do in the game alone to keep you occupied for a week. If not, just don't buy it until it's patched.

Well, Molyneux is now saying that the patch may actually be ready by the games launch, but either way it'll definitely be out within the first week.
So I don't get the fuss here, co-op isn't that big a part of the game, and we're geting it patched in fairly quickly anyway.  This is no where near as bad as LittleBigPlanet not shipping with online co-op.

And really, would anyone prefer the game be delayed by a a few weeks or even months just so they can release it with online co-op?  Delaying it to include it would mean it would need to go through the certification and testing process all over again.  Adding it in via patch is definitely the best move here.

some people need to relax. at least the wait is only one week and that this feature that has been promised is actually going to be in the game, rather than become another broken promise by molyneux. local co-op still exists if i recall correctly, so I don't know why a bunch of people are angry or freaking out.

Makes Sense not to give it straight away or it will be lag and crash mania

The discs are probably already made. If they were to delay the game one week and then remake all the discs, it would set the company back a huge amount of money. Who knows, maybe the coop is finished but there is just a bug keeping it from working.  Also, Kazonas comment makes sense.
