Germany Bans Photoshop

At least that's what it looks like from the Left 4 Dead box art.

It's no secret that Germany has some very specific, very peculiar rules about the content of video games. What's good enough for the rest of the European Union is often not found suitable for der Deutchland. The usual triggers for a ban or a refusal of rating are intense violence and Nazi references, and the old joke is that the easiest remedies are to just swap in robots and green blood where necessary. Apparently these standards apply to box art too. As reported by Kotaku, here's the Left 4 Dead box as the rest of the world will see it.

And here's the German-approved version.

Yup, apparently Germany would rather keep its thumbs attached, thankyouverymuch. If this is all they can show of the box art, I cannot even fathom what the game itself will look like to our Bavarian brethren. "We've gotta take these filthy, mindless, bloodthirsty zombies out...on a field trip to the local science museum!" Coincidentally, it kind of ruins the magic of the original Left 4 Dead box art for me, having evidence that the model was just counting to four. It's a shame, because I'm profoundly amused by the 1:1 ratio of words to visual puns they've got going on. It's like I'm playing Classic Concentration, except that every solution revolves around Alex Trebek's insane desire to devour my brains.

But, but...it's already green and a zombie! That was good enough for Carmageddon, dammit!

Ok, here is a quote from the Kotaku article: "We don't know whether the USK had a say in this, or whether Valve/EA just felt like playing it safe, either way, that's a different box."

I live in Germany and never heard of the USK censoring box art before so I think the decision of changing the box was made by Valve/EA. By the way: the USK doesnt censor anything. They just give a rating to what age certain content is suitable. This rating tops at "18+" which I think relates to the American "Adults Only" rating. After this comes material which is on a list called "The List of Media Harmful to Young People" or "Index". Games, movies and books which have an entry on the Index are not allowed to be promoted or sold in public. The govermental organ that decides if a game is entered in that list or not is called "BPjS" (Federal Department for Media Harmful to Young Persons) and acts only by request by a private person. If a game gets censored or cut or the box art gets altered, these changes are made by the publisher to ensure the game doesn't get an AO rating. True, the guidelines for graphical violence are more strict as in other countries but we german gamers are aware of that and things will change. Anyway: who needs violence when he can have nudity :D

For more information on the BPjS see:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bundesprüfstelle_für_jugendgefährdende_Medien

the article is in english. peace :)

*EDIT* I just read that the decision to change the box art was made by EA and has nothing to do with censoring but with not waniting to have a box with a half rotten hand on in in the shelves during christmas time.

Hi everybody,

I too live in Germany and I can tell you that all the censorship that is being imposed really starts to get to the people. Most of the gamers buy their stuff in the UK or from Austria. Biggest thing that really got on my nerves was the brothers in arms: hell's highway - cut they did. It's not like they just took out the blood, but they altered the complete gameplay experience by removing the headshot cam, along with the dismemberment. I am not saying
that I need blood and gore in order to like a game ( after playing mirror's edge demo today I can most certainly say : highly original without violence ).
But germany even had to completely pass on gears 1 and 2, because they consider it to be way too brutal. Funny thing though: They left dead space UNCUT !!! It's rated m for mature.... must have all been drunk when they made that decision I guess.
Finally, I read a few weeks ago that a petition has started ( not by gamers but by german gaming sites and magazines like "PC games" ) which has the goal to force the goverment into dropping censorship. People wrote letters to the politicians who are responsible for this crap in the first place and
threated them by not electing them anymore.
I really hope that will help. If you are mature, I think you should be able to decide what you want to see and what you don't want to see.
In my case, I am laughing my ass off when I splatter a dude with a chainsaw in a game, but I strongly refuse to watch movies like "hostel" or "saw"
because in this context violence is only being used for the sake of it while in games this is an additional "funny" thing that can enhace the experience you get from a game. Thanks for reading :)

Jesus, for a country as crazy as Germany, they sure don't like their violence. Maybe they're afraid of a repeat of the late 1930's & early 40's? My german brothers and sisters I feel for you, I truly do.

Goes without saying that Nazi's in games would be a no go... doesn't it?
