GoldenEye Rides A Very Strange Line

There's something sort of weird about remaking levels from someone else's game, but this modernized GoldenEye is no simple remake.

No Caption Provided
Activision announced a new game called GoldenEye 007 at Nintendo's press conference to uproarious applause from folks with fond memories for the last game to bear that name. But after digging a bit deeper into this whole project, it's sort of weird and not exactly what you'd expect. For starters, it feels like a modern shooter, not a remake of an N64 game.

The first thing you might notice about this Eurocom-developed game is that James Bond is now being played by the current movie Bond, Daniel Craig. In addition to Craig's involvement, Judi Dench is reprising her role as M. The original writer of the movie has been brought on to "update" the story of the movie to make it fit better with a more modern Bond. So you'll still see characters like Alec Trevelyan and General Ourumov, but the game now takes place in 2010. In-game gadgets have also been given a fresh coat of paint, so you'll hack computers with a smartphone in the new game.

So it's telling a story that's roughly the same and taking you through a lot of the same sequences from the original game... but it also has very little to do with the actual game. Rare, the developer of the original GoldenEye, isn't involved with the project, so the levels can't be 1:1 remakes. But you'll still see some familiar sequences in new ways. The game still features the dam sequence and offers similar (though, I suspect, not legally actionable) design.

The other major difference comes from the game's controls. While you can play with a Wii Remote and Nunchuk, if that's your thing, I played the game with a Classic Controller Pro. With two analog sticks and plenty of shoulder buttons, the game simply plays like a modern console-based first-person shooter. None of the swimmy analog gun movement from the original is there at all, and you can now vault over low barriers. Heck, you can even hold down the left trigger to aim down the sights. With that control scheme in place, the game feels like a Bond-themed Call of Duty game.

No Caption Provided
The multiplayer in GoldenEye includes four-player splitscreen, which I suppose you kind of have to put in there if you're going to write "GoldenEye" on the box. But it'll also have eight-player online with standard deathmatch and objective-based modes. It sounds like there will be some persistence to the online multiplayer, include a perks system that, you guessed it, sounds just like something you'd find in a Call of Duty game. Classic character models from the Bond franchise will be present, including Jaws, Scaramanga, and Oddjob, who throws his hat instead of lobbing grenades. Some of these characters and other customizable options will be unlocked along the way.

Visually the game looks pretty good, and the action Activision showed off looked pretty intense, with some good melee kill animations. When you marry that to a proper, modern control scheme, you get a game that manages to recall the original game just enough to remind you that it was a popular N64 game without making you ignore all of the things that console shooter developers have learned over the last 13 years. It's out this holiday season on the Wii.

I think I'll just wait for games that actually interest me, like BulletStorm.

@zonerover: Casino Royale actually had decent gameplay, the single player was fun. The online was kinda shitty though.

The splitscreen multiplayer in that is fairly good though for just shooting around with friends. (On wii)

Nintendo owns the rights, so no. They could have made plenty of money allowing Microsoft or Sony to release the original on their services, but they clearly have no interest in that.

I don't need to read any farther beyond that to know that this game does not deserve the name Goldeneye. At all.

@ Mikemcn @ freshym Sorry if you guys or anyone else got annoyed by this...

I'm pretty sure Casino Royale: The Game didn't do too well with reviewers or the public in general.

Didn't play Casino Royale so my gut reaction just comes from coverage. Jeff enjoyed 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand although he thought it was an average title. If you guys enjoyed it and thought it was a good game, that's cool. This is the games industry anyway, not the movie industry where many people think we should somehow review every movie and judge every movie pretty seriously irrespective of its content. We're allowed to pick titles because they were fun and not because someone else told us so.

A little disappointed.  I mean the Wii as we all know is not great for First-Person Shooters, so not having it on the PS3 and/or 360 is kind of disappointing.  That and how well is online going to work if there is any?  I guess I am just being a little guarded.

Maybe, though I think Rare may have owned the rights to those games rather than Nintendo. Not sure, though.

This is just sad. Everyone wants a "Goldeneye 64 HD" so bad - just a version of the classic game that they can play on a modern system and which would feel all right - but this sounds like it's not really going to deliver that.

Then again, would people REALLY be happy with those old controls? Wouldn't they have to update them to stay with the time?

I don't know. What I really want, I think, is a straight port of the game, rough edges and all... and then if they also provided options to break out of "classic mode" and enable e.g. new control schemes, then great.

This is one of the REAL problems with licensed games... even on the rare (no pun intended) occasion that a good one comes out, two console generations later, there's no way to play it, and no way it can be remade due to all the legal obstacles and wrangling over who-owns-what. Urg.

@Bucketdeth:  try not to worry. They say its an exclusive version of goldeneye, but because its not a real remake, that gives the opportunity for rare to make a true remake like they did with perfect dark on xbla. That I cant wait for.

its just a bond game with goldeneye written on it. It's success is in no way assured by the original. Take a look at the last bond game that had goldeneye written on it.

You couldn't have both control schemes in multi. Modern players would destroy classic players.

Well considering the Wii is slightly lacking in that type of shooter, I think it looks like a great game for Wii owners.

Hey, let's put Daniel Craig in it so teens who buy this game know this is like a new Bond game.
Hey, let's keep the controls dated so teens will wonder how much its trade-in value is.

So instead of going back to roots of unbearable first person shooter gameplay, we're going to get a mediocre, generically competent shooter? So it won't be terrible, but it's surely something to miss.

I feel bad for Eurocom. Anyway they play this, they aren't going to win. If they make a perfect remake of Goldeneye, nostalgic idiots and critics alike will say the game is too old. If they try and modernize it, said nostalgic idiots will harp on the game not going back to it's roots and critics will harp on it's mediocrity and refer to the many other better first person shooters out there.

All the people getting up on Jeff's and Ryan's junk over their discourse on Goldeneye are a bunch of fools.

Microsoft already tried this back in 2008 - they could not reach an agreement with Nintendo, presumably about the division of profits. So the game was canned.

Also, Rare is fully focused on Kinect stuff for the foreseeable future.

Oh, *that's * why Jeff was so aggressive towards this! He thought it would be a 1:1 remake with the same bad controls and antiquated level design or something?

Nah, this should be pretty good. Maybe not great, there's something inexplicable that makes me feel iffy about this whole thing, but the Wii needs a solid FPS.

As far as I'm concerned (especially with my absolute hate for this new one already), go ahead and get it. Just try to ignore the fact that there are technical limitations to it, but try and appreciate the game for the design that it is built on. I'll commend you if you can find it.

I'm also pretty sure you'll find that Jeff (and most of the other guys') antipathy for Goldeneye stems from the fact that they were rocking pc fps games back in 1997. Which means that the hobbled controls were already outdated... in 1997.

I admit it, I cheered when it was announced, but now, reading this, I'm skeptical. This seems like an attempt to win some nostalgia-sales after seeing the failure of the "COD-with-new-skins"-game called Quantum of Solace.

If it was a refurbished version of the original, I would pick up a Nintendo Wii just for that game. If I had a Wii, or of it came out on the other consoles, I would probably pick this up, but as it stands now, it's not a console-mover for me.

It seems like COD's mechanics seem to be leaking onto most new games lately. I don't want to judge this game too early but this news report doesn't make me feel any more secure.

I'm hoping it's smart enough to go beyond a strait "remake". Creating the game from the ground up with modern sensibilities while making it "feel" like the original seems like the way to go.
