With Tecmo still reeling from the loss of Team Ninja head Tomonobu Itagaki and the company's in-process tie-up with Koei, I wasn't quite sure what to expect out of the company here at Tokyo Game Show 2008. Would they just go bold and announce a new Ninja Gaiden or Dead or Alive, just to reassure the world that it's still business as usual?
Turns out a new Dead or Alive was announced, but it's going to be one of those weird fighting game MMOs that never seem to work out quite right and almost never make it into any English-speaking territories. But the company's other new game announcement, Quantum Theory, is probably one of the most exciting things to happen at this year's show.
Note that ESRB bit at the front of the trailer--that means that this trailer came out of Tecmo's US office and you can take that to mean that you'll see it hit North America as well as Japan.
Of course, it's just a trailer and a few screens, and there isn't too much additional information out there. Reports out of IGN confirm that it will be a third-person shooter that puts players into the role of a guy named Sid who holds a fairly massive gun. He'll be joined by a white-haired woman named Filena who, obviously, has a weapon that can morph into a gun or a sword, depending on the situation.
The trailer makes the game look like it will be based around the concept of taking cover behind stuff and shooting guys. Not to be all shallow, but I'd be lying if I said my first notes on the game simply read "J-Gears." It immediately reminded me of a more wild and Japanese take on Epic's popular third-person shooter. It'll be interesting to see if that's what Tecmo is going for with Quantum Theory, or if it's going to strike out in an entirely different direction. Either way, I'll be waiting to see and hear more about it.
