Jeff Gerstmann Heads to New York, Takes Questions

Watch the video of Jeff's trip to Brooklyn and the NYU Game Center, where questions were asked and answered.

Before PAX East consumed us all last weekend, I took a quick trip to Brooklyn to make an appearance at the NYU Game Center. They've got a very cool thing going out there, providing students with high-tech setups like 3D printers, motion capture gear, and so on. If there were more game-dedicated curriculums out there when I was getting out of high school, perhaps I would have found my way into one of them, rather than rushing straight into the job market. But, of course, there's no one way into the video game industry. There's no one way into the "covering the video game industry" industry, either. Anyway, enough preamble. Here are a couple of hours of video with me speaking with James Marion, who was kind enough to invite me out in the first place, and taking questions from the audience. I had a good time, and unlike the events that followed that weekend at PAX, no bottles were broken over any heads during the course of this discussion. Oh well, there's always next time...

For more on the NYU Game Center and its ongoing series of talks, check out this website on the internet.

(Also, if you're on mobile and the Vimeo embed doesn't show, perhaps you'll have better luck by going directly to the video.)

Great video! Obviously Jeff has a voice on the site, and has mentioned this stuff before, but this was a cool way of seeing his perspective on how things are going on this site in long form fashion and when it is not directly attached and related to a different subject and discussion. (the last thing like that was a Whiskey Media Radio Show from years ago?)

That's a real shame, really. I come to Giantbomb to see Jeff be Jeff the crazy video game guy, not Jeff the businessman.

I hope he can lock up the business end of things and return to the good old days of GB where he had all the time in the world to do an endurance run, post on forums and just talk about video games.

It's amazing how well Q and A sessions can work when the questioner isn't trying to be funny or drop a sweet inside joke.

The host asks Jeff at one point if he sees written games coverage moving away from reviews and more toward more serious articles exploring their meaning and what not, and Jeff hesitates before answering to the affect of, "sure, maybe."

I don't know about you guys, but Jeff's "Jar Time" videos are essentially this in video format (which I think occurred to Jeff, by the look on his face, but couldn't find the way to express it).

Jeff, in my opinion, has his finger on the collective pulse of gamers. And it's the unspoken tragedy of the loss of Ryan that has required Jeff to spend more time on the business side and less on his sharing his thoughts on the industry.

This was great. The PAX Panel was great. The GDC live stream was great. I feel the old Bomb burgeoning back. Ryan's smiling down on all of it. Can't wait for the future plans.

I want to send a shout out to the person who posted a bunch of signs at the main building entrance, as the place in Metrotech center was a little confusing!

I was surprised to see the word Duders in real life. Good times.

I don't get to see all the content produced, so the content was really interesting and novel to me.

Thinking about the 19 point rating scale gives me a headache.

Great talk, that was cool. You said things I've heard you say in other places (Jar Time, podcast, etc.), but I liked it.

It's almost as if you were some kind of expert. Almost.

I love it when Jeff gets semi-serious and just talks business. It's often a refreshing and interesting insight into the world of someone that's been in the industry for a long time and has some perspective. It's also a good counterbalance to all the absolutely nutty things that go on in a PAX panel or an episode of the Bombcast. Awesome!

It was cool getting to ask a question about PR and Marketing's relationship with critics. The whole talk was a nice, refreshing palette cleanser for the wrasslin' carnage about to ensue at PAX.

A perfect example of GiantBomb being half "frank inside baseball on the gaming industry" and half "insane bullshit".

Nice talk! I've heard Jeff answer most of this stuff before, but it's great to get a little bit more depth into some of it. And it was cool to see the really enthusiastic students getting into the whole thing. Really enjoyed this one.

Really happy to hear Jeff acknowledge the wiki and all, as you would otherwise suspect it was about ready to be put to pasture. However, I feel like Jeff has long aired his aspirations for the wiki and yet it's been stuck in the same state for so long now. I'd like to hope these new workings within the wiki will be implemented sooner rather than later; maybe when they at least finally hire these new staff members.

@hassun: You tend to get more well thought-out questions in environments like this one. The people attending are there mostly for the learning experience (this was an educationally facilitated talk, presumably for students only without or with limited access to outside parties), so it makes sense that they'd want to ask questions that really count.
