Let's Stay Home Tomorrow

Sony's virtual space for avatar excitement to go wide on December 11.

While it's still technically being classified as an open beta, Sony has announced that PlayStation Home will be available to all users as of tomorrow, December 11. Jack Buser, the director of PlayStation Home, also took some time go over some new features to be found in the PS3's new virtual world.

The new stuff includes a four-player minigame called Saucer Pop, where avatars get into UFOs and fly up to pop bubbles while avoiding bombs. The jukebox feature works on a voting system and all players will hear the song that gets the most votes.

Buser's communique also talks about what still seems like the driving factor behind PlayStation Home: product placement and branding. Activision, Disney, Eidos, EA, LucasArts, THQ, Ubisoft, Sony Pictures, Paramount, Red Bull, Ligne Roset, and Diesel are all going to be a part of Home. Some of this stuff has already surfaced in the form of Diesel clothing stores and spaces devoted to specific games.

The Red Bull area will feature an air race game. Here's some video of that in action:

I've been in the beta since November; it's pointless.  I bet in the Sony pitch meeting it sounded totally awesome, but in practice it's basically you running around looking at commercials with a bunch of other digital strangers.  Maybe it's more practical to communicate with friends if you have a headset or a chatpad, but if you're a PS3 owner without those 2 tools (as I am), it's pretty useless.  It also takes some time to load each area, so it's not a seamless experience.  I'm curious to see where Sony is going to do with it, though; I'd certainly like it to be better than what it currently is.

Suck it Sony, this will be interesting and all the backlash as to whether this was worth the hype and wait.  Although I will say Netflix on Xbox is still better.  Like Vinny pointed out yesterday, you can do real things while you have your Xbox pump out 5 seasons of Hercules: the Legendary Journeys

I thought Home was a great concept but sorely lacked content.  Looks like that content is coming.  Right on!

Look, the way I see it is, it's free. How can you complain about something that's free that you only have to touch if you want to?"

its so you can meet people to play playstation 3 with and chat about stuff. and of course if you have lots of friends with ps3's its a great place to chat with them as well. i found it to be much more fun with friends.
my reaction to it now has been simple OKAY, but the problem for me is that there hasn't been any features in the closed beta, just a big open space, some videos on walls and some games to play, i was expecting tons of companies to have exclusive spots throughout home like warhawk and resistance 2 etc. so as soon as that stuff rolls out it will be awesome.

Wait, so people are going to be forced to listen to music they don't like? I guess this could encourage people to come to a compromise and work together so everyone gets a turn...?

Nah.

I've been in the beta for a while now. It's great for meeting up with friends and then jumping into games and stuff. I like it!

This still seems pointless, if I want to meet people id rather go outside :| Unless these minigames/adver-games are actually worth playing (equal or better than paid for equivelants) I dont think ill ever touch or mention it ever again.

I want to buy a PS3 this month, but I'm still waiting on any word of when a price cut is going to happen to see if it would be better if I wait another couple of months.
