Let's Stay Home Tomorrow

Sony's virtual space for avatar excitement to go wide on December 11.

Virtual jeans for your virtual dude!
Virtual jeans for your virtual dude!
While it's still technically being classified as an open beta, Sony has announced that PlayStation Home will be available to all users as of tomorrow, December 11. Jack Buser, the director of PlayStation Home, also took some time go over some new features to be found in the PS3's new virtual world.

The new stuff includes a four-player minigame called Saucer Pop, where avatars get into UFOs and fly up to pop bubbles while avoiding bombs. The jukebox feature works on a voting system and all players will hear the song that gets the most votes.

Buser's communique also talks about what still seems like the driving factor behind PlayStation Home: product placement and branding. Activision, Disney, Eidos, EA, LucasArts, THQ, Ubisoft, Sony Pictures, Paramount, Red Bull, Ligne Roset, and Diesel are all going to be a part of Home. Some of this stuff has already surfaced in the form of Diesel clothing stores and spaces devoted to specific games.

The Red Bull area will feature an air race game. Here's some video of that in action:

It's going to be very interesting to see how the world reacts to PlayStation Home tomorrow.

well I think this shows once again that Sony still have no idea how this whole internet and networking thing works.

They should call Microsoft or Blizzard and have them send over a "Dummies guide to online gaming and server capacity" because two years after launch they should know better.

I think Home would be a lot more interesting if it was the default PS3 dashboard... like, you turn on your PS3, and oh, there you are... in your PS3... maybe you're in your little virtual house... then you can virtually go outside, virtually explore the world, and then find games to start up...
it'd be like Virtual Reality 0.1

honestly, Home would be more interesting once we actually have virtual reality games...
i'll wait for the PS9

It's STILL not out in the UK and it's coming close to 8:30pm. My guess Sony messed up the servers somewhere. PSN was REALLY laggy when i was trying to get to the store.

You can say it's free all day but that only makes home worth trying. But unless one person can tell me the reason behind home then I don't see what the hype is about. I used it and the coolest thing I seen was 3 goof balls rapping in the middle of the bowling alley.

I'll check it out, but the avatars are lame just like it is on every system and I still have no clue what the purpose of home is for. It's buggy, laggy.choppy long loading and its basically advirtisement city.

lol good post man. i can't believe these guy is so SICKENED by advertisements in HOME, as if it would be any different in REAL LIFE. i can't imagine somebody logging onto home and being absolutely horrified by a POSTER!!! OMG on the wall, or a VIDEO ZOMG!!! on the wall. oh the horror, THE HORROR!!! *VOMITS FROM BEING SO SICKENED*"
Do you really see home as a social hub and with some occasional ads? I see it as Advertising witch happens to have a social hub going on.

If it was a choice between seeing that "SPOTLIGHT" advert load up on the NXE every time I turn on my console or flying Red Bull planes through hoops -- I'd pick the planes every time. And let us not forget, I DON'T EVEN HAVE TO GO TO THE RED BULL HOME SPACE IF I'M SO OUTRAGED WITH THE ADVERTISING.

Gah did you guys stop watching TV aswell? I mean, advertising seems to get you SO mad. I'm all for creative advertising here. I'll never buy a Red Bull (keeps me awake at night) but I'll happily fly their digital planes.

I honestly do understand the scepticism and the criticism but like I've said a bajillion times already - you don't have to use it. It can sit there on your XMB like your "Life With Playstation" button and you need ever, ever, ever click on it.

I personally am quite excited to see what the likes of Disney etc. put on there.

EDIT: Oh and while I'm here - can I stop hearing this "dud0rz 360 haz Netflix its betterz than bluray" - get with the picture people... most of the world doesn't even have Netflix yet.

EDIT 2: And yes I will continue to keep defending Home because I think people are being unrealistically unfair on it. If Sony were saying this is £9.99, dude if Sony were saying this is £4.99 or whatever... I'd totally not buy it and I'd be outraged. But I repeat again - it's FREE. How the hell can you complain about freebies that you never have to use?

I mean you guys must turn down free promotional items they hand out in the streets too right? "Blatant advertising, ghastly company"."

I got a beta invite recently, I tried it out to have a look at it. I really couldn't see the point to it at all, its a sluggish experience where you end up spending most of your time looking at download and loading bars. Its just full of adds. In my opinion it was wasted resources and effort, and fails to improve the online experience in a meaningful way.

Only played the Beta once. Seems very bland and useless but thats probably because I don't know anyone else with a PS3 so it was just me and a bunch of strangers watching SOCOM featurettes and Far Cry 2 trailers. Fun.

On paper, it sounds like a bad idea. In practice? We'll see. I don't have a PS3 and I have no intention on getting one, yet I'm interested in seeing how this turns out.

to color peoples expectations, after spending an hour making a virtual me, I sat down alone in my empty virtual apartment staring out a window and noticed that I was doing the exact same thing in real life, and somehow my avatar began to weep.

also, I had a bubble machine.

I was in the closed beta. I made a dude then walked around the apartment. I then tried to go to the plaza, which brought up a download screen...OFF! Definitely was not interested in the beta. Maybe my tune will change now that everyone is in on it.

Ever since I saw an advert for a Samsung phone on the walls of a supposedly "grimy rock dive bar" in Guitar Hero III, I've been against in-game advertising. I only really liked the use of billboards in Crackdown to try and shift me a copy of Deathproof. It almost did, but then I remembered that it's shit.

The entire concept of buying a PS3, and having other companies try to sell you stuff through your purchase sickens me.

"Suck it Sony, this will be interesting and all the backlash as to whether this was worth the hype and wait.  Although I will say Netflix on Xbox is still better.  Like Vinny pointed out yesterday, you can do real things while you have your Xbox pump out 5 seasons of Hercules: the Legendary Journeys"
ps3 has already established it's own movie service, it wouldn't make sense for them to scratch all that for netflix instead. besides, getting the movie on blu-ray is wayyyy better than streaming poor quality versions, i have net-flix and get blu-rays in the mail, and they come with the special features, and if i want to actually OWN downloadable movies you can only do that with PS3.
jervo said:
"I've been in the beta since November; it's pointless.  I bet in the Sony pitch meeting it sounded totally awesome, but in practice it's basically you running around looking at commercials with a bunch of other digital strangers.  Maybe it's more practical to communicate with friends if you have a headset or a chatpad, but if you're a PS3 owner without those 2 tools (as I am), it's pretty useless.  It also takes some time to load each area, so it's not a seamless experience.  I'm curious to see where Sony is going to do with it, though; I'd certainly like it to be better than what it currently is."
the areas take like 10-20 seconds to load, they're big and, of course, in nice 3D graphics, so i'd say thats pretty seamless. also yes it is a much much much better experience with a headset or a keyboard.....and why the hell don't you have a headset if you are playing online?!?!?
