LittleBigPlanet 2 Officially Announced

Forget side-scrollers, let's make RPGs, shooters, racing games, and more.

For a game like LittleBigPlanet to make sense as a franchise, each new installment has to increase the amount of things you can create and tweak by an order of magnitude. Today's announcement of LittleBigPlanet 2 definitely looks like it's exactly that. Not only will all of the old content from the first game continue to work, but players will also be able to create entirely new kinds of games, with top-down racers, side-scrolling shooters, RPGs, and so on. Hopefully you'll be able to tweak the physics a bit to make everything feel a bit less floaty and playful. That ended up being the thing that slowly soured me on the original game. It was an amazing achievement, but even with all of the creativity being shown by the community's best minds, it all sort of ran together.

Here's a batch of shots, and there's a new trailer that's currently worming its way through our video compressor. All told, it looks kind of awesome.

The game is due this Winter.

" Oh great! I'm glad they're showcasing all the new stuff you can make like Space Invaders clones and such. It's too bad you won't be able to make anything resembling ANYTHING else without it getting taken down.  It disgusts me that they try to advertise this game based on cloning other games, when you can't actually do that without violating copyright. "
dude have you seen half the stuff on the game? entire levels on how to create superhero costumes, entire levels based on games, its not copyright infringment, no one is making money off of it, so I think It can be consider parody, do you have the first game? go online and type in your favourite game/movie/character in the search and im almost certain there will be something for it.

The Idea is  to create your own games not to rip off already established ones which is why many were taken down in the first place.. there is nothing wrong with having similarities but a direct copy infringes on copyright.. people need to use some their own ideas.

It's one of the most prominent aspects of the trailer. It says: "Oh, and those 2 million levels? Still there (and looking better than ever)." -- they're going to upscale them into LBP2's engine. I think 1Up has some comparison shots of a level in LBP now and then upscaled into LBP2.

Not sure how you missed that, but now you know! :)

I suspect all that Diamond meant was that he was more excited for whatever new levels shipped with the game, which certainly seems reasonable since the original ones in the first game were great as well.

Happy and great trailer. Just hope I can grasp my head around this one. LIttleBigPlanet was one of my anticipated games for 2008. Little did I know, when I got to it, I felt so bored. Probably from playing by yourself but still didn't feel amazing to me. Fell asleep playing it to be honest. Who knows, maybe if I try it again I might like it. Looking forward to hearing more info on this. Oh. and for anyone who wants to know the song, it's Sleepyhead by Passion Pit. Great choice of music and one of their best I must say.

Honestly looks really cool but I don't know if I'll get it. The first one was pretty fun playing with friends, but I never had time to bother with the level creation and whatnot.

There's something about Little Big Planet that makes me very happy.  If I had a Playstation I would have pre-ordered this by now.

So I just barely got a PS3, as in this past Friday. Is it still worth it to get the first game? It's probably pretty cheap now, yeah?

Yea I was thinking of MM's levels.  I'm sure the 2 million user levels aren't actually on the disk, odds are LBP2 will read the user levels off the network and just use the new engine (with its MLAA, SSAO, and possibly other new effects).

Wow, now THAT's the way you make a trailer. I didn't care about this sequel at all, but this video made me really excited about it.

On a side, does anyone know the name of the song?

In which case I COMPLETELY read your post wrong. I'm sorry, haha! I replied to that thinking you said, "What about the old user levels?" -- either I replied to the wrong post or I had a brain storm or seomthing. Sorry, lol!

It's definitely worth getting the last game. My advice: play the single player first. Then try to create your own level. Then play one of the top-ranked user levels. Your mind will be blown by how far the community have come. They surpass Media Molecule's own creations in many areas.
