Long Suspected Dragon Age 3 Now Has Subtitle

Sequel is built on DICE's Frostbite 2 engine, ensuring better-looking blood.

Dragon Age II was not received very well by fans, putting even more pressure on Dragon Age 3.
Dragon Age II was not received very well by fans, putting even more pressure on Dragon Age 3.

BioWare has been talking up a third Dragon Age game for a while now, but made everything official official today with the announcement of Dragon Age 3: Inquisition.

Scheduled for a late 2013 release and (!) built upon DICE’s Frostbite 2 engine, one detail we're currently missing is what platforms Dragon Age 3: Inquisition is in development for. PC is a given, but don’t be surprised if BioWare and Electronic Arts are being coy because some platforms aren’t announced yet.

Like last generation, it’s very likely we will have a whole slew of games that come out on the current, established platforms (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3), while also getting super sized on the newer ones. Still, that’s just speculation for right now, but given the release timing, it would make a lot of sense.

“We’ve been poring over player feedback from past games and connecting directly with our fans,” said BioWare Edmonton and Montreal general manager Aaryn Flynn in the release. “They haven’t held back, so we’re not either.”

Dragon Age 3: Inquisition has reportedly been in development for more than two years.

It will remain to be seen. I think for many people this is the last chance to see if they come good on promises anymore. Speaking to Aaryn's comments in particular.

Better be a return to Origins or no go for me....even then I'm very skeptical of every game they release now.

Would you rather they use their awful in house stuff or UE3 again? DA2 looked dated and plain compared to the Witcher 2. Frostbit might actually bring it up to par again.

As for the gameplay, as long as it's less repetitive and more open than the second game, I'd be happy.

If it's more like Origins I'm all for it. That game was great.

I'm actually pretty pumped for this. Despite it's many flaws, DA2 charmed me enough to go back and replay DA:O and I think they have incredibly strong fiction and a good world. I'm hoping DA3:I has a larger more diverse world than DA2, but keeps the art style.

Well to put things in perspective, when they were promising that Mass Effect 3 will be a better balance of action and RPG than ME2 was it turned out to be even more action and even less RPG so who knows how Dragon Age 3 will turn out.

I'll give this a chance when it hits the bargain bin just like Dragon Age 2. Not a bad game for $10.

There's little enough the party-based Western fantasy RPG market for this to make some money regardless of the impression left by the second installment.

Yes!

I don't care what anyone thinks. I found DA2 immensely enjoyable, despite it's many flaws.

This is cause for happiness.

Does this mean it'll be the first RPG with destructible environments? Because that would be nuts.

I like being optimistic, and let's face it. Dragon age origins was fantastic.

They totally understand that dragon age 2 had a huge reaction to it's more limited scope, short length, and recycled elements. They either fix it, or they don't .Imo, mass effect 3 was a far higher quality sequel to mass effect 2 - than dragon age 2 was to dragon age origins. We know bioware can put together a great sequel. Will they? I don't know. Time will tell.

Also, even a corrupt, console focused bioware game is better than a lot of other games out there. They still know how to tell an emotional and involving story.

I didn't hate DA2. I definitely think it took a step back from DAO in terms of repetitiveness and game play, but the characters and the fiction are really great in my opinion.

Dragon Age: Origins was the 2nd best game of the 00's. I doubt they could top it, but as long as it's better than DA 2 I'll play it.

Here is to hoping the team team making this one goes back to basics and makes a real follow up to Origins. DA 2 was dissapointing to put it mildly.

I think DA2 was judged too harshly, but only because the original DA was such a great game. I didn't hate DA2, but I do hope they move back in the direction of the original. I still played DA2 through twice, so I'm definitely picking this up either way.

Nah they were both terrible despite what blind Bioware fanboys might try to tell you.

Tit for tat. I don't actually think that. But that's what you get for labelling people who didn't like it sheeple in such a shallow fashion.

Origins was fantastic, even though the graphics weren't the best. Still haven't played DA2 and probably won't unless I can get it for about $5. Hopefully Bioware can return to form. Honestly, as long as they don't make such a weak ending like ME3, they are really strong story tellers. A lot of people forget that the reason the ending to ME3 was such a let down was because the rest of the game was so entertaining; At least for me, that is.

Here's to hoping!

With that subtitle, I can't help feeling they'll be continuing Hawke's story. Either with him/her or with a new character, but the ending of DAII was pretty clear, regardless of which side you fight for.
