Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Scoops Into Stores February 15th

Box art, Special Edition details and the first two DLC characters revealed.

Capcom has sent the word out that Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds will be voicing its overwhelming displeasure with the New York Knicks on February 15th of next year on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. The release marks the turning point by which the month formerly defined by Valentine’s Day is now the month in which Capcom releases sequels to fighting games that haven’t been iterated on for ten-plus years. You know… cause this is the second time Capcom has done it. That’s a pattern. Probably.

Look at that sweet steel case, bro!
Look at that sweet steel case, bro!

Alongside the announcement of the game’s proper release date, Capcom has also unveiled the Marvel vs. Capcom 3 Special Edition package, and if you’re looking to make MvC your fighting game of choice for 2010, it may actually make sense to pony up the additional $10 for the package. No, it’s not because of steel book case included with the package (though, I have to admit, I do love me a metal case).  Nor is it the prologue comic that will explain the story behind the collision of worlds in the game (though I’m sure it’s hilarious.). It’s not even the free 1-month subscription to Marvel’s Digital Comics platform (a $10 value!) that might convince you to spring for the package.

No, the main reason the Special Edition might be the way to go Is that it includes a free voucher for the first two DLC characters being added to Marvel vs. Capcom 3. If you’re confident enough in MvC’s quality to lay down the extra $10 up front (or you’re just going to own that game, regardless of what anyone says) you’ll gain free access to two returning MvC2 fighters: Resident Evil protagonist Jill Valentine (which, when grouped up with new MvC edition Chris Redfield, will make for a fun RE1 team), and crazy eyeball/tentacle/morphing anomaly/cyclops Shuma-Gorath. It's worth pointing out that you won't have access to those characters out of the gate; Jill and Shuma-Gorath won't be released for about four weeks after the game's February launch date, so save your Jill Sandwich jokes until March.

Now, if we only knew the full character roster for MvC3, we’d really be all set. But yeah, that ain’t happening. Expect Capcom to keep trickling out the rest of the game’s core roster in the lead-up to the February launch date.

Also, expect the places where you see those character announcements to get more bizarre as well. Like just yesterday, when Capcom unveiled that Zero and She-Hulk were the latest additions to the character list... with each character revealed exclusively by a different online publication. Though, to be fair, I hear Giant Bomb is working on a deal with Capcom to announce a character’s elbows, as well as the vowels in their name, at a time closer to MvC3's release. Stay tuned!

Oh, and here's the Marvel vs. Capcom 3 box art:

I don't see no Mango Sentinel.

Also you're assuming that you'll even be able to play against people who have the DLC characters when you don't,
I'm assuming they wouldn't be stupid enough to segregate the online play into two sections after four weeks.  I'd be super pissed off if I couldn't play my freinds just because one of us had DLC.

Explain this to me. When someone plays the game day 1 aren't they going to have to learn how to counter all 30 (or whatever) characters the game has? So what difference does two more make a month later? I would think that alot of gamers would like that challenge of overcoming a new obstacle. "
The difference is that I have the opportunity to experiment with all the charcters I have available.  Having two characters that I will fight on average once every 32 games means it would take me countless hours of online play just to see all their specials and super combos.    Add to this the combinations of super combos with other characters and you have a distinct disadvantge as soon as each character set comes out.

1) You already think they're stupid for doing DLC characters in the first place, but now you're saying they wouldn't be stupid enough to do such and such. Like I bet up until yesterday you probably thought to yourself that Capcom would never be stupid enough to do DLC characters in one of their fighting games right? Now look where we are. It all goes back to a point I was trying to nmake earlier which is that don't ever think you have someting all figured out, ie don't ever assume "such and such would never happen, because I don't agree with it" because ultimately those type of things will happen.

2) You have the option of buying those characters and experiencing them. You wanting to have them from the get go, or not wanting them to be DLC is your own problem, ie you simply don't like how they're handling it, that's all it comes down to, however there's no right or wrong in the situation regardless of what you believe, feel, or desire. This is what Capcom wants to do it's their choice, and it can either succeed or fail, but your personal feelings aren't going to be what makes or breaks this DLC.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't people make a big deal about the SF4 costumes only for them to end up being successful? So what does that tell you? If people complain about something that a developer is doing and say things like "well I'm not going to buy the DLC" and yet the DLC ends up being successful anyways, what does that tell a developer?

@Charlee_CoCo:
You are right in thinking I'm expressing my opinion on this which I have every right.   Having to pay extra for such an integral part of a game just feels wrong to me.  The DLC may well be successfull as alot of pre-order special editions are.  I had no problem with buying costumes for SSFIV.  I bought a pack because I thought Capcom had doena good job in updating a great game .

Anyway... I will not be buying the DLC or game.

All they've shown of that is a brief tech demo. It'll be ages before that happens.

So, we should all boycott this game because it announced DLC already?
No, thats ridiculous, it's like saying you won't buy a washing machine because it doesn't come with detergent.. be grateful their putting in DLC, it shows that they actually care about this game.
