Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut DLC Coming This Summer

Free DLC pack will add cutscenes and epilogue sequences designed to expound upon the original ending.

Spoiler for the Extended Cut DLC: Shepard's adventures were all in the mind of a young autistic boy! Thanks for playing!
Spoiler for the Extended Cut DLC: Shepard's adventures were all in the mind of a young autistic boy! Thanks for playing!

In the wake of the Mass Effect 3 ending controversy, BioWare made it clear that it had been listening to the constructive feedback from the unhappy fans that weren't the ones breathlessly hurling death threats at anyone who might possibly be listening. Based on that feedback, Dr. Ray Muzyka stated that new content would be coming for the game that provided additional context for the existing ending. Of course, the worry there was that EA might use this as some cynical opportunity to charge for even more added content. As of today, we can put at least that particular fear to rest.

EA and BioWare today announced Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut, a free piece of DLC that will add additional cutscenes and epilogue scenes that will expound upon the existing ending--not change the ending outright, as some of us feared. Said series producer Casey Hudson of the new DLC:

We have reprioritized our post-launch development efforts to provide the fans who want more closure with even more context and clarity to the ending of the game, in a way that will feel more personalized for each player.

There isn't a specific release date for the Extended Cut DLC yet. The press release just provides an open-ended "summer" release date for all versions of the game.

What do you think? Does this sound like enough of an addition to possibly address the issues you may have had with Mass Effect 3's end? Or is this not the solution you were looking for?

Honestly my gripes will be easy to fix so here's hoping they address that whole Arrival DLC logical conundrum. But in the end, its still probably not going to be an artistically good ending, just okay at the best. But you know what, its free and I will take it.

Cool that it's free, and cool that it explains more. The people complaining that they buckled are retarded. They aren't changing the ending, they're expanding on it because nobody understood it. If you think this is some doomsday for game companies, you are as big a part of the "internet problem" as the ones demanding entire rewrites. You have no fucking sense.

Get over yourself. This was planned from the beginning.

Hell, the voice actor for FemShep confirmed she's recorded no new lines, so any new content here must have.. *gasp* been created before the game was released.

The ending was obviously a set up to create mass interest before the true one was released.

Unless with the revisions don't include more Shepard dialogue or the new Shepard dialogue has yet to be recorded.

Play it until you get to Earth then take a break for a few months.

That could also mean that there is no Shepard dialogue being added to the new ending either...

This is exactly what I was hoping they would do. Good job Bioware! Acknowledging there was a problem and fixing it is excellent. Too bad people have already started complaining, hehe. Guess being a miserable sod is just more fun!

Good job Alex!

Alex, I normally am not a fan of your writing, as I feel that it is too jokey. A little bit of snark is fine, but I think you lean way too hard into it and it comes off abrasive for the reader.

This was an excellent write-up and I hope that others recognize that you are a talented writer who is capable of writing engaging material when you rein yourself in.

I hope that I didn't sound like too much of a pompous jackass writing this, because I want you to do great things for the site, and everyone else is too busy being an asshole to you to give you proper constructive criticism.

Hey remember when they released the director's cut for blade runner which made the movie way better and no-one fucking complained?

Maybe you fucks should actually give this a chance before parroting the "artistic integrity wahhh" line that you don't actually understand but you heard a bunch of games press harp on about it so you figured that you'd go along with them because you wouldn't want to be "entitled" now would you?

In summary, eat many dicks.

Was there a bunch of people demanding it be changed though? As far as I understand the changes in blade runner were to mostly undo the damage made by the focus testing of the original print.

Hell, the addition of the happy ending to original ruining any nuance and ambiguity that both the creators hated is probably the closest analogy to what may happen here. But then analogies are a rubbish crutch for any intellectual discussion.

As far as I'm concerned the damage has been done. I will need to hear it from at least 3 people that they have their writers in electric shock collars before I ever buy another game from Bioware.

They thought it was good!

That's actually a pretty nice gesture. I mean people will probably have moved on by that point and I imagine for some it'll be too little, too late, but I suppose this is probably the best possible outcome for the situation they put themselves in

EDIT: ...presuming they don't fuck up the DLC as bad as the ending, I suppose.

I find it unfortunate that *now* is the point where all the people who haven't seen the ending come out to defend it. A reasonable person could go, "Huh, there are something like 20,000 people bitching to high-heaven about this ending, and I've never seen that many people unified over something about a game before. Maybe there's something to this." Or, you know, you could come out on the internet telling all the other people on the internet that they are immature babies for wanting a better ending than the one you didn't care enough about in the first place to be bothered by. Christ almighty.

Due to course work and other issues I have not been able to play mass effect 3 yet. I loved the first two and I must admit that even with all the talk about how bad the ending is I am still more than willing to play the game when I can. Now that this DLC is coming out and is going to be free I think that I will just wait till it comes out and play it then.

Yes! Someone else gets it. I've seen other creative types on here talking about how this is horrible and a violation of artistic rights - PUH-lease. I've been a graphic designer for over ten years and the idea that customers have no say in something creative that you are SELLING them is baffling. Art for the sake of art is fine and good for being considered untouchable, but be it a videogame, movie, TV show, or music album - the artist has a certain level of obligation to the audience if they wish to continue a long term relationship with their customers. The idea that commercial art is somehow untouchable is romantic nonsense.

I couldn't have said it better myself. I'm just happy that something is being done to clarify things a bit. This isn't exactly what everybody wants, but it's good to see they took their customers opinions. And IT'S FREE!!

I'm glad "The Indocrination Theory" has been disproved by this... I was getting sick of all the speculations and how people were getting so hung up on all the little details. There were some convincing points some had, But I never thought Shepard was ever Indoctrinated.

Fans: What the hell was that?! We want a better more fleshed out ending!

Bioware: ok we are looking into it

Fans: oh yeah? Well it better be fuckin free!

Bioware: we've decided to release this ending DLC for free

Fans: oh yeah!!? Well… uh… hmm… FUCK you Bioware you still suck!

People are dumbasses. This is what you wanted and you still find reason to complain. Oh well the Internet is the Internet. I for one think this news is perfect and shows Bioware wasn't planning on scraping money from us by extending the ending. I will eagerly anticipate this

@SonicBoyster: Generalise much?

I have completed the game and don't like that they had yielded. I don't like that if you shout loud enough you get your way. I worry that additional clarification will kill the nuance to what was at least an interesting ending that has generated some good discussion amongst those who took the time to think about it rather than just run onto the internet to complain.

Having considered how broken the fundamental narrative of the ending is, even beyond it's poor execution, I don't know that this will help in any real way. The ending just needs a full rewrite, and the entire endgame needs an expanded design to put it on par with ME2's.

But I'll still download it and see for myself. And really, bless those poor bastards for trying. It's not their fault Mac Walters shit the bed! Now they have to clean it up as best they can and tip the maid real nice for her trouble.

Not exactly what I was hoping for per se. I definitely wanted the ending explained a little better, and it seems they got that part; however, it seems a little janky if you ask me just to put in extra cutscenes and dialogue. I would have liked the gameplay to have been extended a little further to be honest, but I'm grateful that BioWare has responded.

I don't care, really.

The ending of ME3 could've been a 1080p video of a fat guy jerking off, and I would still feel like I got my money's worth. I laughed more at the snippets of dialog in that game than I have at some pretty good stand-up comedy routines. I'm just really thankful I get to play games, and wasn't born in Somalia or something.

But that's just me.

Alright, cool.  It's unfortunate it wasn't up to the expected standard in the first place, but it's good that they're freely supporting their product like CD Projekt have done quite extensively with both Witchers.  If there's a glaring problem then fix it - that's how it should be.

I think the ending is just inherently shitty and they can't do a whole lot about that (changing it entirely would be farcical), but they can at least make it shitty in a way that makes a bit of sense.  The only route that possibly turns it around and results in something good is a proper 'reveal' of the Indoc Theory (making it canon) and then returning to the fighting on Earth and cliffhangering into ME4.

Pretty much how I feel. Free extended cut DLC is a fine gesture and probably the best option they could take but I've already finished Mass Effect 3, and a few other games since then. Already seen the ending and not really interested in revisiting it anytime soon when there's so much else out there.
