Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes Arrives Next Spring

Ground Zeroes lets players experience what leads to The Phantom Pain.

You’re right to be confused over Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. The same game? Different releases? It’s the latter, and we’ll have a chance to play Ground Zeroes next spring.

No Caption Provided

Ground Zeroes is a prologue to the events in The Phantom Pain, and will be released in downloadable form on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 for $30. Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 owners can also play, with a retail disc arriving for $30, but download versions only costing you $20.

“There will be a significant difference in what Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain brings to the series,” said series creator Hideo Kojima in today’s press release, “so we want to ease players into the new open world environment and its potential, allowing them to fully benefit from all that the new game offers.”

Right now, there’s no release date for The Phantom Pain, though it’s hard to imagine we’ll see two Metal Gear releases in the same year.

I'm very, very excited for this! Coming much sooner than I expected.

Here's hoping it has $30 worth of content, and not just twenty minutes of sneaking followed by forty minutes of cutscenes.

I didn't know they were releasing this on 360/PS3 as well. Will the Phantom Pain also come out on the current gen consoles?

I think the error is assuming that Konami cares about making PC games

Interesting, I like the concept of small downloadable prologues to games. Hopefully it'll be worth the price of entry. Dead Rising 2 did a fairly good job with that, but it was much cheaper to get Case Zero than this will be.

@mortuss_zero: I think a large part of the price is that they know a large portion of the Metal Gear fanbase will buy whatever they make, so long as it's not completely broken. I'm one of those people.

So basically, instead of MGS V being a $60 game, it' s a $90 game split into 2 parts. I can't say that's too surprising coming from the man who once said it would be cool if players had to buy a new copy of the game every time they died.

I don't see PC listed under those 2 games in the wiki, so therefore, there must not be a PC release coming, regardless of what they said.

ground zeros is apparently one mission

how long said mission is? whos to say

http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/11/04/metal-gear-solid-ground-zeroes-release-date

Ground Zeroes consists of one mission - a Cuban rescue mission - that has been extensively demoed this year, including at Tokyo Game Show in September. It will be out on PS3, PS4, Xbox One and Xbox 360 next Spring. In the UK it will cost £19.99 on the older platforms and £29.99 on PS4 and Xbox One. In the US, it's considerably cheaper at $19.99/$29.99 respectively.

$30 seems steep. I bet just before PP comes out they heavily discount it for the promotional value.

Well, I essentially payed $50 for a demo of MGS2 back in the day (I certainly wouldn't have purchased Zone of the Enders otherwise), so I can probably justify paying $30 for a demo of MGS5.

That was Phantom Pain, but Ground Zeroes has Kiefer Sutherland as well. And that oil tanker base that blows up, and the Cuban prison camp.

Obviously that's The Phantom Pain.

Ground Zeroes is mostly the Prison Camp that Big Boss infiltrates, 9 years before The Phantom Pain.

@mooseymcman: This is Kojima we're talking about. 20 minutes of gameplay with a full-length movie's worth of cutscenes (90 or so minutes).

@koolaid: I think we've been seeing a mixture of both or neither, it is Kojima and he really likes to mess with us. Plus he has had a ton of time to think of ways to do so.

@mrfluke: Ugh, that doesn't sound very good... I'm not a big enough fan of the MG franchise to buy this regardless of quaity/length, so I'm gonna sit this one out, at least until the internet confirms that it's worth the money. Sounds a lot like the GT 5 Prologue model to me.

If David Hayter isn't involved in the game to at least SOME degree, then this MGS won't get a minute of my time.

Christ, is there a price point that doesn't prompt at least one person to say this kind of thing? We don't have the faintest idea how much actual content there's going to be in Ground Zeroes; how can you already be trotting out the "dollars per hour" value judgement?

30 freakin' dollars/euros/what have you? For real? I love Metal Gear Solid to death, but this prologue better be amazing and lengthy enough to justify paying close to half of what the full game will cost.

For those concerned about Ground Zeroes' length:

"MULTIPLE MISSIONS AND TASKS –Ground Zeroes boasts a central story mode and Side-Ops missions ranging from tactical action, aerial assaults and “covert” missions that will be sure to surprise."

This is straight from Konami (of course) and seems to indicate that this game will be a bit more than a Tanker Chapter/$30 demo type-thing, which is reassuring, because that does seem quite steep based on what we've seen so far. Also, no physical next-gen version? Interesting...

Considering it's just a taste I don't think it's impossible for Phantom Pain to come out fall 2014. Current gen releases beyond that are kind of weird.

The messaging for this game is terrible, if I wasn't reading gaming sites I'd have no clue if this was one or two games. It's not been sold to me as two complete MG games, instead it feels like they've either split one game off to get more cash or started two stories and couldn't decide which one to go for.

Wait....so there won't be a retail disc release for PS4/XBO, just a download? But, there will be a download and a retail disc release on PS3/X360? I don't know why, but it almost seems like it should be reverse...somehow.

I am so in for the PS3 disc. I am still kind of opposed to all digital. Look what happened to your game library Xbox Arcade owners. At least with PSN you can kind of play some of the games on your Vita (but even that is very limited and kind of crummy).

Prologue. Makes it sound like Gran Turismo 5: Prologue which I see some people getting a bit peeved by. It seem like one big paid beta.
