New Firmware Set For PSP, PS3

PSP to get 5.00, PS3 set for 2.50... does this mean the PSP is twice as good as the PS3? Oh, my aching head.

After years of people asking things like "you know what they need to do on the PSP," it's finally happening. The PSP is finally poised to get its own version of the PlayStation Network and the PlayStation Store. This will let you buy games directly from the PSP, rather than having to use the PC or a PlayStation 3 as the middleman in your quest for digital downloads and transactions.

The PS3's 2.50 upgrade also sounds pretty snazzy, adding "last online" status entries on your friends list, making trophy level meters appear in more locations, and adding additional support for the official PS3 Bluetooth headset, which is shipping this week as an optional pack-in with copies of SOCOM: Confrontation. As someone who has tried several different BT headsets on the PS3 with very little satisfaction, I'm very interested to see how this one will perform.

On the firmware side, the headset upgrades will allow a high-quality mode and on-screen indicators for battery life and volume level.

For a full list of changes, check out Sony's blog. The US blog hasn't posted any release date for the new firmware, but its UK counterpart, Three Speech, has an SCEE press release stating that both firmware updates will hit Europe tomorrow. Seems likely that the US updates will hit in a similar fashion, especially since those headset upgrades should probably be available alongside SOCOM, which hits stores, like, tomorrow.

The psp update will be more than welcome - as will the ps3 screen grabbing, upgraded web browser - OS - based psn signup pages 

May want to add those to the list actually (not sure if fully confrimed)

-FLash 9 ability in ps3 browser
-Screen shot grabbing utility on supporting games on ps3

Aww man if this doesnt brick my ps3, im going to love tomorrow ^_^

I can't wait for the update to go live, interested to try the screen-grab thing and see how many websites I can use for video using the Flash upgrade.

And finally the PSP has PSN integration, that's a useful feature.
And....the PS3 gets Scene Selection for videos, which was awesome on the PSP. Now it'll be easier to find specific scenes from my movies.
And are you back in the States yet, or did you post this in Tokyo?

Omega, the screenshot ability is only a game by game thing, so it looks like we'll have to wait for patches for us to use it at all...

I totally regret buying a blu-tooth headset for my ps3. It doesn't work at all. 

Should have waited for the official one.

Now for the PSP to get the screen-grabbing and some integrated PSN stuff (although that would kill the battery) and it'll be fucking golden (more so than it is already, I guess). I'll probably have to buy at least one 8 GB memory stick. I have a 2 gb now. That won't cut it.

I can't connect to PSN tonight more than likely thanks to this update. This is unforgiveable. I demand a Sony rep commits Seppuku on the internets to in some way make up for this. Although, finally being able to hear obnoxious 14yr olds cursing ineptly over headsets that actually work will suffice.

I like the idea of the screen cap as well as the auto shut off and stand by settings. Just as long as there are no bugs in the update then it all sounds good to me.

Pretty sure Flash 9 on PS3 (or iPhone or Wii or whatever else) would require Adobe to release the Flash 9 SDK; which I've seen no plans of. I hope I'm wrong.

Yea, having the account management as part of the XMB on the PS3 instead of in this ugly gray looking web-based page is a welcomed change.  The notification box is now a translucent charcoal gray; better than that regular gray one but I still wish it had more style to it.
