New Grand Theft Auto in 2009?

Rumors start flying about a new GTA by the end of the year. I vote for Neo-Tokyo.

Yes. Sold. LA looks exactly like Tokyo in the future.
Yes. Sold. LA looks exactly like Tokyo in the future.
** Update**: Be sure to check out the newest Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City, coming exclusively to the Xbox 360 October 29, 2009. It'll include both The Lost & Damned as well as the newer Ballad of Gay Tony.

There's plenty of of Grand Theft Auto content on the horizon with The Lost and Damned and China Town Wars, but how about a whole new game and location for the series? Rumors are flying about the next big installment in the series coming as early as the end of 2009. The newest issue of Game Informer apparently contains the following vague snippet between its pages:

We're not talking about new DLC or a collection of previously available DLC, we're talking about a full retail game. We expect this title to follow the suit of previous GTAs and use a subtitle such as GTA: San Andreas, etc. Tokyo might be a possible setting for the game, but details are non-existent at this time.

I personally haven't seen the issue, so I can't vouch for its validity or put it into more context, but if they're talking about a new GTA IV-style game, color me excited. Tokyo would be a great choice, though I wonder what time period would be best. Maybe it's time for Grand Theft Auto to head into the future so we can start having sex with prostitute replicants and throw them out of our hovercars to get our creds back.

Thanks to PSU for the tip.

tokyo would be pretty lame. organized crime in japan is pretty much yakuza and that's it. there's already a yakuza game. it's called yakuza. i don't think for a second they'd make a game set in japan. if anything, england is more likely.
personally, i doubt a retail gta will arrive this year, but when one eventually does come, i hope they stick to the approach of gta4, because i'd hate to see the second coming of san andreas, too sprawling for its own good and filled with extraneous bullshit.

London. Bring it home, baby....

Actually, GTA:Edinburgh would be pretty epic, although the crime scene doesn't extend much further than football hooligans and heroin addicts. The audio would be fucking hysterical though.

GTA: Moskow
Set during a "cold war"-like conflict. But poking total fun at the whole thing. A police state where you get mixed up with spies, the secret police, etc. You have two "health meters" one for life the other for temperature, maybe even a drunk meter as you know those guys can't go an hour without Vodka :P The world and the plot could be really serious but all the characters would have thick accents and be super colourful. You could even have a technology based subplot, space/arms race. Some MIG air combat missions. The odd bear fight. The amount of russian cliches out there are endless.

Do it Rockstar

On a side note, I don't think you guys on the american continent should be so quick to dismiss European cities. Maybe we don't have as many pop culture references but we have a shit-load of history. And maybe it would not have to be just one huge city, maybe it could be the city centres of three major european cities (Berlin, Paris, Rome, Barcelona, London, Moskow) that you could travel between, I'm thinking a little bit like you did in the adventure game Broken Sword, but open world and without the silly puzzles. Who knows it could even be a way of teaching (some) americans about Europe. The open GTA world could even be a great platform to merge the sandbox genre with the adventure genre. A main character whos family was torn apart during WWII where he is trying to peice together his ancestry only to find that family members have ended up badly or turned bad. And if you want to make it ridiculous, how about fighting the pope at some stage?

The next console version will be the first Wii GTA game.  It is the sensible thing to do.

Ugh, Tokyo isn't different enough from New York to make it a different experience. Vice City and San Andreas were completely new setting, Tokyo would just be the same boring ass shit all over again.

Ah damnit now look what you did. Now until there is a Blade Runner style GTA game (or honestly anything Blade Runner style) nothing will be the same. Hell I will take Fifth Element if I must. To me the most interesting game locations based on design are

1. Neo Noir (Blade Runner, Fifth Element)
2. Lived In Space (Alien, Star Wars IV-VI) vs. Perfect Space (2001, Star Wars Episodes I-III)

Hell I would love to see an epic game that takes place on a "Blade Runner" Earth then jumps to the dirty side of space (get in a cheap transport ship) and eventually get to the nice white wall filled upper-class areas. Could be a feast for the eyes. So far Dead Space got the dirty space down perfect. We just need the rest.

I'd freaking flip out for a cyberpunk GTA.  I was just thinking about awesome that would be this morning.  You know, basically what they did with Gta 2 but better.

I won't get my hopes up tho.

Only if the dialogue is all in Japenese, and you have to read subtitles.  Now that would be authentic.  It won't be in Tokyo though.  How about GTA: Glasgow?  The guys at Rockstar North would be familiar with the subject matter. (Although I believe the studio is in Edinburgh)

2009 full release?  That has to be bogus.  They took two years to make San Andreas and that was when assets were easier and cheaper to make.  Regardless, I hope that they take their time to make it an oustanding game and hire some better writers for the radio DJs and commercials this time around.

With all the forthcoming DLC content forthcoming I assume Rockstar will still want to get  a lot of mileage out of  the current GTA. Though if it is true I'd be a happy man. I'd prefer a fictional city actually. Nice to keep it in the GTA universe.

Would they really do a real location? I doubt it. Maybe a city like Tokyo with their own spin on it, like Liberty City was with New York City.

I've been saying that for years. GTA: Blade Runner would be the greatest game ever made.
Hopefully they focus on content more than the color grey and the Euphoria engine this time around though.

(sorry can't see the way to quote)
I agree, always wanted to see GTA move into the future, instead of islands you could have levels of the city (vertically) and flying cars to traverse the levels.

Grand Theft Auto: Carson City.  Or it'll take place in a city that looks strikingly like Edinburgh.  Actually, why not the whole British Isle?  They did a state, what's to stop them making a Country?

I'd be shocked to see another one this year. It just seems... too soon, ever for Rockstar. An annoucement perhaps, but not an actual release.

I think a GTA: Tokyo Bladerunner style would be awesome however.

Oh, rumors.  You are just the living end!!

Maybe it's just on the order of Vice City Stories, or something.

Vinny, a full on Blade Runner open world would probably make Tyrell's eyes implode.  I for one would be very happy at such a prospect.  Neo Tokyo awaits.

I'm not getting the Blade Runner reference, Vinny. When does it say this game might take place in "future" Tokyo?

If you want a GTA in Tokyo, just play Shenmue, Persona 4, or Yakuza series.

If this is true I think that this installment of GTA will be an MMO to compete with All Points Bulletin.  It will be kind of a let down if the next GTA is the same as GTA4 with the only thing different is a new setting and characters.  I'm hoping that they do something drastically different.

You guys may or may not agree with me here but I looked at my game pile while imagining a new futuristic GTA, and in a similar line of thinking with Vinny I could imagine futuristic floating cars, but instead though it'd be a starwars themed GTA, it should be a game focused on a character outside of being in a jedi/dark jedi order.

I mean a single-player game where you start off with little next to nothing on a farming-world, you get hired by a local small time drug seller (or whatever) and then work your way to owning the entire planet and since it's a farm-world it only make's sense to turn the normal crops into drug crops instead.

Later on in the game you could be at a point where you own the shady cities/sections of several different planetary system's. ie: Like your own syndicate/firm. Neighbourhood's full of drug addicted people that make you money by taknig and making the drug's and then also pay you to protect them from opposing forces and drug seller's (And like any GTA game they won't have a choice.)
That could be awsome. I mean you could meet some jedi's/dark jedi's in your travel's who either help or hinder your efforts/use you for their own reason's and end up dieing when you find out about their treachoury.
Like I say though, you may or may not like that idea, but I personally really like it myself.

**********ALERT BELOW IS A GTA IV ENDING SPOILER*********

Some of this actually makes me sounds really dark and evil (I'm not), but most GTA's are along these line's with alot of humour thrown in. Like when Niko has to kill somebody for Bruce and later find's out it was because bruce was paranoid about any body beating him in a workout lol, insane but very funny. Plus there's the dark undertones like when either niko's brother or his girlfriend die at the end of GTA IV. The GTA: Star war's games story would be the similar in some respect's.

How about they get creative and do it in a city like Rochester, or Buffalo.  Obviously I'm saying this because I live in Rochester, but its small enough so it would be cool to have it be an exact replica.

I really like the idea of doing Vice City again with the new engine, and realistic style and gritty story.

Ever see Cocaine Cowboys? I want a gritty, realistic version of that! Main character should be a Columbian. Latino's get no props in video games...
Also, they need to bring back planes! I want to run some cocaine smuggling missions via aircraft, avoiding the authorities

GTA series is all about following gangster ass movies. GTA3- Godfather, Goodfellas, Vice City- Carlito's Way, Scarface, San Andreas- Menace 2 Society, Boyz in the Hood that stuff is so obvious i didn't have to type it. if it is in Tokyo then no doubt it'll be from the John Woo era of gangster ass movies like Hardboiled, probably Black Rain so maybe the early 90's era again or a 2009 version of that stuff.

i think they should take it back to the 70's Blaxploitation style. Superfly Dolemite type business. bust off with a playable female character for the first time Foxy Brown style. hot chick with an Afro and a shotgun.

or a Bonnie and Clyde, Micky and Malory would be extra dope. co op action or an AI partner the whole time. good times.

Ok so basically the premise your mentioned based of Blade Runner is the game equivalent of Shadowrun then minus magic, and Orcs etc.?  If you put GTA in the future then that's what you got, in my mind.  I am referring to the classic SNES Shadowrun.

Not that that's a bad thing.  I want a classic SNES style Shadowrun.  So sure  make it GTA sandbox style.  Never played the actual 360 FPS Shadowrun game but from what i've seen and heard i'm not interested.
