New NBA Jam Downloading To HD Consoles This Fall

No Wii version announced. BOOMSHAKALAKA.

Development on the next NBA Jam is heating up. In a press release, EA Sports revealed NBA Jam: On Fire Edition, a proper follow-up to last year’s NBA Jam title for the Xbox 360 and PS3. In an ironic twist, EA has decided to make this one an actual downloadable game on both platforms--On Fire Edition will see releases on XBLA and PSN, just like its predecessor was supposed to before EA Sports scrapped NBA Elite 11 and turned Jam into a full retail release.

Just for a bit of reference here, NBA Jam for HD consoles was once a download attached to the purchase of NBA Elite 11, the long-awaited reboot of the NBA Live franchise. But when things went south for the new Elite and the project was canned, EA decided to drop NBA Jam on discs and then add in extra features via patch downloads. NBA Jam’s sole planned retail release was on the Wii, a platform the developer hasn’t mentioned at all in its On Fire announcement press release.

As most sports sequels tend to promise, On Fire Edition will supposedly ship with tweaks and new features based on fan feedback. New AI that is based on the system used in the Fight Night games is, perhaps, the most important of the new features mentioned so far, but fans can also look forward to roster updates and a co-op “Road Trip” component that will have pals battling it out against legends and current stars in “a series of white-knuckle challenges” against each NBA team. Also, look forward to the usual NBA Jam trimmings: wild animations, secret characters, a scary announcer, and so on.

No word on pricing just yet, and as I mentioned, no word on a possible Wii release. I should also note that EA Sports doesn’t rule out a potential retail release for On Fire Edition either in this press release.

Curious to see what features they will pack into this. I bought the disc version, and am satisfied with it, but I could see where it could use some tweaking, especially in the ease of blocking which is especially noticeable when using a character that has a low block rating.

Don't buy this shovelware. Don't even watch the previews. If you have to, play the 16 bit home version.

Too bad they didn't do this the first time around.  Better late than never I suppose, I would love to get an updated Jam but I'm not paying more than 15 bucks.

Yeah, no.  NBA Jam doesn't strike me as a sports series that can sustain yearly iterations.

Then again, it's probably still going to be better than whatever NBA sim EA pulls out this year.

Or it could be a games on demand thing. A fully featured 49 dollar game. But downloadable!

This will be interesting, just hope EA doesn't really plan on milking this yearly. Every other year, or so, would be a better idea if they want to go this kind of road.

What they should do is ship you a disc copy of the last build of NBA Elite 2011 with your purchase of NBA Jam.  This would accurately reflect the purchasing intent of many people who were going to buy that game last year, anyway.

NBA Elite 11, the long-awaited reboot of the NBA Live franchise.

How was it long-awaited? There was a Live 2010. It was just the next year's game... and it still sucked.

Good. I didn't buy the retail version because I felt 50 bucks was way too much for a game that felt like a download title.  Glad I held out.

Finally, I was waiting for this news before buying the game.
Now if only they'd price it at $20 instead of $40-50 which i'm guessing they'll do.

Here's hoping they update rosters and get FREAKING MILLSAP ON THE JAZZ! Why wasn't he there in the first place?

Also, Michael Jordan. And Muggsy Bogues.

This really pisses me off.... I was perfectly ok with this until the "  but fans can also look forward to roster updates." Honestly for them to announce that they only going to do a roster update for the  iphone version, and then a couple weeks later say hey if you want the update on your console as well you can buy our stripped down version, is kinda bullshit.

I'll pass on this and pretty much any other versions they spit out.  They totally destroyed the AI and the game isn't fun to play at all.  Typical EA Sports cheating in a EA Sports game.
