NGP Backwards Compatible With and Enhances Your PSP Games

God of War didn't even use the second analog stick, it has a fixed camera.

This sounds like a great idea. I might have to get one of these NGPs now.

So you have to re-buy digital versions I take it - since it doesn't have a UMD slot.

I was likely gonna buy a PSP once the inevitable price dropped happened, but with this news, I dunno, I may have to buy an NGP and actually enjoy the games.

I have MGS Portable Ops and Patapon 2 that I downloaded from PSN when I had a PSP...will they let me play those on the PS3 with the remaster program or do I have to buy them again?

The only thing that has made me interested in NGP so far.

How does that work? Does it just remap the analog stick to the face buttons, or is there something more?

Now we can play PSP games the way they were meant to be played.  And it only took 7 years.

@xobballox: It's only compatible with stuff from the PSN Store.  So all you peoples that pointed and laughed at us PSP Go fans and our digital only hullaballoo, well guess who's getting pointed at and laughed at now!  Awwww yeah I can play my PSN downloaded copy of Justice League Heroes on my NGP!!!  Erm.  Wait.  Who the hell would want to do that.  Nevermind.

Yeah, exactly. Only digital copies of PSP games will be backwards compatible. Which for anyone that wasn't crazy enough to buy a PSP Go, that means none of your PSP games will be backwards compatible.

Even without a second analog stick, both God of War games are really good...I would give them a try before unjustly writing them off like that...

Pretty misleading headline there: this won't do jack crap for my PSP games, which are all on UMD.

Great news, hopefully NGP will have it's own God of War game

I liked GoW psp controls. Dodge felt better imo. This is great news for everybody except for psp owners.

If my currently downloaded PSP games will work on the NGP (which is how I read it) then this will be really cool. If Sony expects me to re-buy all the games again then their mistaken!
 
I will still get a NGP what ever though for sure as the analog sticks rather than a crapy numb will make all games much more playable. While I still expect the 3DS to out sell the NGP due to its apeal to younger children as a toy I think the NGP may become favoured with the late teen and older "gamer" market.

I assume they mean that only the new, re-release, of old psp games will have those new features(use of the second analog stick, since machines aren't magical/alive, and therefore can't simply learn to use a new analog input on their own), seeing how it isn't practical to include it in the base system code.

It's not like those games will automatically support dual analogue controls though.

The resolution of the NGP is "double" that of the PSP (960x544 vs 480x272). Therefore PSP games will just use 2X scaling without any filters, resulting in an ultra crisp native resolution image. Unlike the 3DS which has to filter NDS games to keep them from looking extra garbagey when not using 1:1 mode. In fact this backwards compatibility is precisely the reason why they went with 544 height instead of 540.
 
Playing through Final Fantasy 4 Complete Collection right now and I just can't get over how great it looks compared to the SNES one. Would love to be playing it at 4X scale in 1080p, but playing it at 2X on the NGP seems pretty neat too. I hope the video-out supports 1080p this time around and works on PSP games.
 
I wonder if the faster clock will affect PSP games, or if it will be locked to the PSP's 333mhz. I remember how the GTA "stories" games ran much better in 333mhz and off the flash stick when using custom firmware than when using the default 222mhz and UMD drive. The higher framerate and shorter loading screens were a godsend.

for the five good PSP games, I guess this is good.

That is cool that the Monster Hunter 3 stuff they announced earlier this year will apply to more games. Though I thought the God of War PSP games actually controlled surprisingly well. The analog nub felt like it gave more control than should have been possible on that device and tapping L + R to roll felt pretty natural but I sure it will control noticeably better on NGP. 

So, where do I mail in my UMDs in order to get my digital copy?

It`d be nice if I could just ransfer them from my psp to the ngp.  But i`ll probbaly have to re-download them.  Oh well, it`ll be nice to play syphon filter with two analog sticks.  Oh man Peace walker too...

Now the NGP is sounding like a do-over. 

Still not sold on the NGP. I am way interested in the remaster series though.

Hm, I guess I could redownload my 2 digital release PsP games, I could even see myself picking up Patapon 3 eventually.

I am pretty excited about the NGP but I am afraid it won't be out here in time for Christmas and if Nintendo gets out a couple of good games for the 3ds before the end of the year my impulsiveness will probably get the 3ds.

As if I wasn't already sold on getting a NGP/Vita! Definitely looking forward to these enhancements.

Bullshit.If you're unable to play the GOW games or Resistance Retribution on the PSP that's not gimped controls,that's just you sucking at them.

Actually, the PSP God of War games controlled quite well. The only conceit was having the dodge on the two shoulder button as opposed to the right stick.

All of this news with Kratos on them makes me think that Kratoos is the new mascot for Playstation

Great. Maybe I'll finally finish some of my PSP games now that I have a second stick to work with. 

All I need is sony releasing a statement saying that they may have eventual plans to implement PS2 ports for the NGP, like how PSP can play ps1 games from psn store. Seeing those uncharted pics, I'm pretty sure the ngp can handle ps2 ports now. And seeing as how atlus likes to release so many persona games for the psp, if they release P4 for the ngp, I am sold. There's a huge catalog of great ps2 games. Maybe even final fantasy 10+12 may make it's way and mgs too.

I think all of us who have UMDs are screwed  :( in a perfect world sony would say "No prob folks, download the digital version for free" .... like that would happen .... sigh....

I love how Sony appreciates backwards compatibility (well, for the most part anyways).  Plus with the added layer of adding support for controls for games that didn't exist before! Nice.

The only non UMD game I own is Patapon 2 and that's only because even the retail version of the game was a box with a code in it.
