Nintendo 3DS Due In Japan By March 2011

New handheld to offer glasses-free 3D, backwards compatibility.

Nintendo of Japan has issued a brief press release confirming that it's working on its next handheld platform. Going by the working title of "Nintendo 3DS," the platform is scheduled to ship in Japan before March 2011.

Details on the platform are slim, as the release only states that it will offer 3D effects without the use of any sort of glasses and that it will be backwards compatible with existing DS software. More details will hit at this year's E3 in June.

It's nice to have the rumors get cleared up a little bit, but doesn't it seem strange to announce this before the DSi XL hits every territory? I mean, who's going to run out and buy an XL now that they know it'll be obsolete in around a year?

" @Willy105:  I think it is a portable gaming console from Nintendo with "DS" in the title that plays all the other games made for the DS. Am I wrong? In addition it also has other slight improvments, like the cameras on the DSi (which hasn't been used a lot in games except for the DSi Ware stuff), only that this time it is 3D. An upgrade so to speak. Or a successor if you prefer calling it that. "

Exactly. You know, like the PS3 is to the PS2.

Sony has been trying to do 3D (but with glasses) and it has not gone very well in getting it off the ground. The way Nintendo is doing (without glasses) is pretty much what Sony has always wanted. I bet they will add it to the PSP2, along with the touch screen and microphone.

This isn't the first time Nintendo has reused on of their system's name for a new system. Remember the Super Nintendo Entertainment System? The Game Boy Color and Game Boy Advance? And of course, Sony and Microsoft do it too.

Yep, they do it for the successful consoles, so that they make a next-gen system, they can ride in the wave of the old one. Ironically, the N64 and Gamecube were not #1 in their gens, so they didn't follow up with their names.

With the Wii being even more successful than any of their consoles ever before, it would be surprising if their next-gen system didn't have the letters W, i or another i in any way shape or form.

3D sounds cool, not buying a dsi seems smarter and smarter for me though. The question is whether this is the stop point for a cool down, or if they just keep on burning that engine red hot.

I'm still interested in whether or not this system will have a 3D camera.

I did... waiting for the delivery now.

But that's because I really liked the idea of a really big screen and don't care what other people have said about it :>
Its perfect for me because I never play DS outside my house anyway. And also I only have a DS Phat at the moment. So I have not "wasted" money on neither the DS Lite or DSi.

You didn't like Avatar or you didn't like the 3D? That movie had problems, but not in the area of visuals.

I just didn't really care for the 3D. I mean, the movie was just a cool movie. I just know now, that after watching it, I would prefer something with an interesting story, rather than see a bunch of CGI (well done, I'll admit) do stuff like ride pterodactyls. I used Avatar as an example of "good" 3D to prove a point; I don't like 3D, even when it's apparently at its best.
