Nintendo Dates And Prices The Nintendo 3DS

At its New York-based press event, Nintendo busts out all sorts of news for the new-fangled device.

The Nintendo 3DS will launch in North America on March 27, 2011 at a suggested retail price of $249.99, Nintendo announced at its New York-based press conference this morning. The handheld will debut in two colors: Aqua Blue and Cosmo Black, and will hit with several bits of pre-loaded software, including built-in augmented-reality games and an Internet browser.

Other than those key bits of news, Nintendo didn’t have too much to say about the device that we didn’t already learn in September. It’s still a handheld that can deliver glasses-less 3D. And it’s still a handheld with a DS-style set of controls, the biggest new feature of which being the 3D slider which will allow you to turn off 3D effects whenever you want. But a few interesting tidbits did sneak out!

== TEASER ==One Friends Code Rules Them All -- According to Nintendo, the 3DS will support the Friends Code system; however, codes are no longer software-dependent. That means you only have to enter your pals’ codes once to see them online across every game. Sure, it's not the best solution, but this is a step in the right direction.

How About That Launch Line-Up? -- Nintendo believes it’ll have 30 games on the shelves between launch and early June. This launch list includes PilotWings Resort, Nintendogs + Cats, Steel Diver, Dead or Alive: Dimensions, Madden NFL Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D, Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition, Ridge Racer 3D Resident Evil: The Mercenaries, Star Fox 64 3DThe Sims 3, LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars, Dual Pen Sports, Super Monkey Ball 3D, Thor: God of Thunder, Crush 3D, Samurai Warriors: Chronicles, Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars, Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell 3D, Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D (!), Rayman 3D, and Rabbids: Travel in Time

UPDATE: Looks like we might not see the following at launch, as we first reported. Nintendo is listing The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of TimeKid Icarus Uprising Mario Kart 3DS Animal Crossing 3DS, and  Paper Mario 3DS as "in the works," suggesting that they won't make the loose launch timeframe.

Built-In Software
-- The 3DS will ship with a built-in pedometer, and an overall games activity tracker that will, according to Nintendo, award you with Mario coins that can be used in select games. Also, look forward to the Mii Maker and the device’s built-in AR games functionality, which uses cards (six come with the device) to render games based off what the 3DS’ cameras see in your environment. An Internet browser and video player were confirmed as well at today’s event.

StreetPass vs. SpotPass -- All 3DS units will be able to detect each other by something called “StreetPass.” Most commonly, this’ll be used to “instantly exchange common game data,” according to Nintendo of America's official Twitter account. The 3DS will also be able to detect 3DS specific hotspots and receive “3D videos, downloadable games, add-on content, and locations-specific special offers” via SpotPass, a built-in Internet connection seeker.

No Caption Provided

Game Demos -- If you want to get your hands on a 3DS before launch, you’ll get your chance. Nintendo plans to put over 5000 units at retail and street locations.

Backwards Compatibility -- Just in case you missed this one, the 3DS can play Nintendo DS games with their original 2D visuals. Also, as we previously reported, you'll be able to transfer your DSi and DSi XL DS Shop games to your 3DS using a service that will be provided by Nintendo after hardware launch.

Hey, that's a lot stuff! Normally, I would consider this information overload, but you’ve had a few months to mull over a 3DS purchase. With official pricing and date out now, are you still down with getting a 3DS or will you be sitting on it for a while?

I'm glad I skipped the DSi, seeing (as always) a better version came out later. This one looks like something to pick up.

Pros

  • Graphics look awesome. PS2 era at best, but it's still an improvement.
  • Analog stick
  • Download service
  • Adjustable 3D. We'll see how the 3D is soon enough, but at least we can turn it off if it turns out to be shitty.
  • Charging bay.

Cons
  • Not sold on the gyroscope or the 3D camera- sounds like a tacked on gimmick.
  • From the looks of it, game lineup and 3rd party support may still be awful.
  • Price. For $250 I might at well pick up a another console. Or a smartphone.
  • According to another poster, bad battery life

@jakob187: Hey, man. Now we can play with dinosaurs in 3D. I'd say that's an innovation in and of itself.

DS in Australia Launched: 199.95, 3DS in Australia is Launching for: 349.95. Make your own conclusions on that. Nintendo are a joke. They've hiked up the prices expecting mass sales like of the DS, in order to turn more profit. They couldn't care less about the consumer. If Sony busted out the PSP2 for the same price or 50 bucks less they may very well beat the 3DS.

Eh, not an unreasonable amount for what it does, but not an amount of money I have to spend, unfortunately.  I'll be waiting, at least a bit.

Fuuuuck Ocarina of Time is tempting me to buy later on.I want so bad, but I will hold off until Ocarina of Time and a price drop.Although I want to see this 3D for myself seems promising.Even though I despise 3D, especially in movies.

I don't know. That line up is incredibly uninteresting. Most of those really do seem like games I'd rather play on a console. Waiting for Layton vs Phoenix Wright.

I'll probably be waiting for a price drop or the 3dsi. The launch titles aren't terrible, but they're not very compelling either.

" @MAST:  Xbox users hate on PS users for "being obsessed perverts who only play JRPGs". Sony users hate on Xbox users for "being jock idiots who only play Modern Warfare and Madden". Sony and Xbox users hate on Nintendo users for "being kids who will buy anything with the Nintendo brand". Nintendo users just hate everyone else.  And that's the ciiiiircle of liiiiife. "
Nintendo users hate life because they got shafted with the console upgrade, seeing as like 5 really good games have come out for the Wii, total. Plus no HD, no wi-fi, no online community a la PSN/Live, Friend Codes, no patching system, poor original controllers (the MotionPlus controller seems like what they should've gone with to begin with), and the list goes on and on.

Even 360 users are starting to feel the upgrade cycle burn, a la ME2 taking up 2 discs, and HD only going up to 720p, paying for a service that at this point is entirely comparable to Sony's (and especially superfluous since just about every game with a good multiplayer component has its own matchmaking built in, a la CoD 4), no blu-ray player, and a few other things.

And now PS3 users face absolutely rampant piracy/hacking, such as in Modern Warfare 2, along with the problem of largely poor multiplatform releases (I think RDR and Bayonetta were?), inexplicable PSN/trophy issues, a lack of some very good Live/PC-exclusive DL games (Monday Night Combat, Raskulls, etc.), along with really poor music interface (Microsoft--Microsoft--supports iPods, but Sony doesn't?), a lot of fairly poor 3rd-party games early on, and other issues.

Basically, it's a shit show all around. Even PCs face issues, with a lack of new games taking advantage of modern hardware, poor support on multiplatform games, etc. etc. This besides the high price point.

...I have no clue why I wrote this all out. I guess so I don't seem like a PS3 fanboy/Nintendo/Microsoft hater? Yeah, there's that.

Also, fuck lazy eye. I can't see these "new" "3D" things because of it. So I'll get a 3DS, someday, when it's also lower in price. Hey, I managed to get to 2010 playing nothing but old Pokemon games (got a DS XL in March with HG/SS), minus the occasional PSP game, none of which I played all that often. Also, I'll play all the games in 2D, so I can see them.

I really need to see how this works before I jump in. $250 US is too much for a system I's probably only use to play DS games on for a while.

Very interested in this hand held. I probably will never buy it but when they say it is a game changer I actually sort of believe it... They really packed a lot of new gimmicks into this thing.

I still will be using my ds lite till these drop down to pocket change price.

That price is understandable, and this platform will no doubt be better supported than the first DS in the post launch window, but I'll just wait for the inevitable hardware upgrade and not be a sucker with my fat DS and my non-backlit, non-rechargable GBA not-SP.

Wow, some of these games look really sweet, particularly Street Fighter and Dead or Alive (thank god it's a fighter and not a boob game). On a side note, the rereleases of N64 games are welcome especially as I never owned one.
It's a shame the system is so damn expensive and has such an awful battery life! Also Nintendo still need to be clearer about DON'T LET YOUR KIDS PLAY THIS IN 3D!

Edit: Dude, the RRP in America is $250 ..... the RRP in the UK is £230, which is $366 currently. What the hell? First Rock Band, now the 3DS too! Urgh.

@example1013:
 Uh, Wii is WiFi...

...and has way more than 5 awesome games. Zelda, Punch Out, Kirby Epic Yarn, Galaxy, Galaxy 2, New Sup Mario Wii, Mario Kart Wii, Reisdent Evil 4 on Wii is the best version, Metroid Corruption, Donkey Kong Country Returns is freaking amazing, so on and so on. These are just a few triple-A titles off the top of my head without even looking at whats in my cabinet.

Xbox live is freaking awesome and worth every penny, with a great UI with a ton of exclusive content, and is in NO way on par with the horrific experience we have on PSN.

And I havent had any price gouging on my PS3, the occasional exclusives I pick up are still $59.99. And the lame hack problems only effect the ding dongs who still think Moderm Warfare 2 is an actual competitive environment. News flash - it's also completely broken on the 360. Blame Activision. Theres a reason Halo: Reach is excellent competition. Blame Bungie.

I own all 3 and have a little issue with each one but I'll tell you this: they're all pretty awesome and shine in their own way. Even my PS3 sometimes :)

Been a nintendo fan since the NES, they started to wear my patience with the WII (which i still have, god only no's why). This is nearly the same price as a PS3 here!!!

Right now I don't think I'll pick one up. Steep price and the region locking are pretty big turn offs. Unfortunately, once I see the tech in action, all bet's may be off. It might be the kind of thing that blows my mind, and I have to pick it up.

Preordered today, and I think it looks awesome. It would be nice to get a launch day lineup, rather than just launch window, but I'm sure that will be revealed. SSSF4 should be a good starter game.

I think a major potential advantage for 3DS that probaly wont be for PSP 2 (if the info we are hearing about it not having a solid state drive) is the fact that you can literaly pop in any DS game and itll work on this (provided its from the country you bought it in). This increases teh 3DS's libararey imensly, while I think the PSP 2 is going to be digital only, meaning theres no way I can think of that you can use your old UMDs in it. I think this is a rather under hyped feature the 3DS will have.

I want the purple one.  I won't buy a Nintendo 3DS until they release it in that shiny purple color.  Maybe for the 3DS Lite or whatever.
