Nintendo DSi: April 5, $169.99

That headline pretty much tells you everything you need to know, but hey, click through anyway!

No Caption Provided

OK, if you're looking forward to the impending North American launch of the Nintendo DSi and you somehow made it past this story's headline and that big image there without absorbing the release facts Nintendo announced today, I've further rendered them in the following haiku.

Out on April 5,
One-hundred sixty-nine bucks.
Black and blue; where's white?

Indeed, there appears to be no white DSi launching in April. Instead we've got that new electric blue version on the way, along with the standard black one. (I'll go for black.) Amazon is taking preorders as we speak, while Destructoid reports that GameStop will begin accepting your delicious, interest-generating early money tomorrow.

I was a little ho-hum about getting a DSi, because the cameras don't really excite me and the merit of the downloadable games service will only be proven after the system comes out and we see what kind of software gets developed. But I'm suddenly really excited about the DSi's support for WPA wireless security, as opposed to the DS Lite's relatively limited support only for the utterly worthless, outdated WEP standard. A couple weeks ago, I dropped my wi-fi router into WEP mode to connect my DS Lite to it, and within 30 minutes some delightful soul in my neighborhood had cracked the WEP key and started leaching my bandwidth. So if you're way into playing the DS online, and you care about keeping unauthorized heathens off your network, the DSi almost seems like a no-brainer purchase.

It still looks like a prototype to me. Like the shit they hold up at E3 then it goes through somekind of color change or re-design. No deal Nintendo.

I dunno.  I am not going to cast a bad shadow upon the DSi just yet at a misguided step into the whole add-on territory, but I am doubtful that it is going to penetrate.  But seriously, this DSi release will segment the market and I don't think it will do as great as expected...

I have an original DS still just because I really only play it once or twice a week at most anyways, so never really had huge desire to go out and get the new DS when it came out.

But I have been wanting to pick up an updated DS for the brighter screen and slimmer design.

The only real complaing here would be the lack of GBA slot... but again, No GBA games are available now. And if you have a large collection of GBA, you already have a GBA system or a GBA Micro. And if you dont have those systems anymore: why? The GBA is backward compatible with original Gameboy titles, and if you complain about the DSi not having backward compatible with the GBA games, then you obviously kept the GBA to play backward Gameboy games, right?

Why is it that so much is made of Nintendo milking their systems?  The PSP got to the third version before the DS.  How many skus of the 360 and PS3 have there been exactly?  Only one Wii.

Would people have Nintendo stick with the one unit the entire life?  That makes no sense.  What was not available or viable early becomes so later on.  Should that be ignored?  The average life of a car model is 6 to 10 years and they get model revisions about every 2 years.  It is the same thing.  DO the people who make this comment think in a vacuum?

I will likely wait for the first decent deal with a proper game before I get 2 of them.

It's not really worth it for me, first of all, I just recently broke down and bought a ds lite.  This is good news, however, because it means that the DS is still going strong and I'll definitely get plenty of use out of it.  Many of those features sound tempting.  The cameras, not so much.  I really hope that new games won't require the cameras for certain gameplay aspects (much like many games utilize the built in mic).  Plus, the DSi is smaller mainly because they got rid of the GBA compatibility, which in turn means certain accessories won't work with it, like the guitar hero thing.  I don't ever plan to get guitar hero, though, but I still want to be able to play GBA games.

And to answer the browser question:  The old Opera DS browsers won't work with this, but that's fine because according to Wikipedia there will be a free browser for download that will only work with the DSi.

I still have an original DS and I'll consider upgrading when a single game I want comes out that isn't The World Ends With You.

Well the average IQ in my neighborhood I could only assume is lower than the amount of digits in my WEP network code...so I don't think I really need to worry to much about people bumming off my bandwith, but just in case I have my router pretty much burried in my the dungeons of my house where only those inside could get much use of it.

I feel happy for Nintendo for getting into the position to be able to charge anything just because they can (also known as appleism™) in only two years.

It's a common misconception that MAC address filtering does anything for your security at all, when in fact it's completely worthless. MAC addresses are passed through your wi-fi traffic in plain text, so anybody with the know-how can packet-sniff your network, grab an authorized MAC, and spoof it to gain easy access.

WPA is really the only worthwhile wi-fi security available at the moment, and hacking types are already making progress breaking the TKIP version. I think WPA2-AES is the only completely secure encryption left.

I agree, the extra features aren't worth the price of admission, and definitely not worth upgrading from my DS Lite (that, like many others, collects dust).  Pass for me as well

Hmmm, as I recall this new version of the DS doesn't have the GBA port on the bottom.... So it isn't backwards compatable, which means no purchase for me. On the other hand, this means the DS Lite will be on clearance all over the place when this new version comes out. Maybe I will finally upgrade from my big fat original DS to a cheap DS Lite then...

RazielCuts- I was close! How do they get away with effectively charging us Brits almost double the price that Americans will pay? I urge all UK residents not to give Nintendo one penny of that insulting asking price.

Like most folks, this isn't a compelling purchase for me as a DS Lite owner.  The downloadable games are the only real draw here for me, and it will take some time for the online store to become fully realized and see if it will be worthwhile when it is.

I thought I'd quickly bring up one point in response to Brad's comment about internet security.

The DSi features 6 internet slots as opposed to the original 3 on the DS Lite or DS. 3 of these slots will be for WEP connections and the other three will be for WPA connections. In order to play old DS games (meaning any games put out prior to the release of the DSi) you'll still need to connect to a network via WEP to play. Only new games will be able to take advantage of WPA security.

They couldn't have just updated the wireless properties of the DS Lite? Instead we need to spend $170 more to get that, an ever so slightly bigger screen and a camera? All during a suffering economy? So instead of prices going down, we have new features that probably won't mean much to much of the casual DS userbase for $40 more than a DS Lite. I'm not impressed. I love my DS, but I really don't see why I should buy this. Is it really hard to change your router settings for a few minutes if you want to play online?

I'm really not interested in this.  I don't see the added value over a regular DS Lite.  I can't say I've ever looked at my DS and thought I wish this had marginally bigger screens, an unusable web browser, and a crappy low-res camera.

I wonder if we'll see such minor upgrades with the Wii in the future.

I think Its a little pricey, it makes sense, 40 bucks more for a camera, bigger screen, wifi, downloadable stuff, and another camera.  however I cant see myself using any of these features, there are smaller devices and ones that we are more accustomed to using that can perform all of these functions.  I think it will take something really innovative, or consistant high quality games to come out of the download service (and based upon my experience with wii online functionality .... HA... functionality..... all too kind) for me to upgrade from my Lite to a DSi

I read somewhere that regular online DS games won't be able to use the new DSi's WPA capabilities, that's only for DSi software and channels...

So maybe Brad should not get that excited...

Is the DSi replacing the DSlite on shelves? If so then Nintendo's an idiot.

You want a handheld system. You can't decide between the DS and the PSP. The DS has more games and a touchscreen and the PSP is a more powerful system in every way possible.
Lost a lot of sales there.

Have you not heard of the Acekard 2i? You can run linux on it and other great things. As far as BC goes, if you own the original game it's legal to have a "backup" of it.

DSi has a free opera based web browser. You wont need that cart if you get a DSi.

Anyway wont be getting this since i already have a lite but for someone who does not have a lite i think the DSi is the way to go.
