Nintendo Has 'No Plans' to Publish Xenoblade In North America, But Hey, Thanks for Asking

The same goes for Pandora's Tower and The Last Story. But again, seriously, thanks for asking.

Perhaps you are already aware of Operation Rainfall. If not, a brief overview.

Not for American consumption.
Not for American consumption.

Nintendo currently doesn't have much on its plate as far as upcoming Wii releases go. In fact, apart from Skyward Sword, Kirby, and Rhythm Heaven, it's safe to say that Nintendo has almost nothing on its plate as far as Wii releases go, leaving some Wii owners wondering when they may have another opportunity to dust off their little white boxes and play some damn games.

But wait, new contenders have entered the field!

As it happens, Nintendo has a trio of exclusive RPGs all currently set for Japanese release: Monolith's Xenoblade Chronicles, Mistwalker's The Last Story, and Ganbarion's Pandora's Tower. Xenoblade and The Last Story are both set for European release as well, meaning that at some point, someone's going to have to translate those games into the English language. However, as of this past E3, Nintendo had made it clear that it had no intention of selling any of these games in North America.

This has led a group of concerned Nintendizens to take up a campaign (the aforementioned Operation Rainfall) to convince Nintendo to release any and/or all of these titles here, to help ensure that North American Wii owners would not be left wanting. Letters were written, YouTube videos were made, Facebook pages were created, and eventually, Nintendo took notice, promising an update in the near future on the requested titles.

That update came last night, and, uh... well, why don't you just read for yourself?

== TEASER ==

"Thank you for your enthusiasm. We promised an update, so here it is. We never say “never,” but we can confirm that there are no plans to bring these three games to the Americas at this time. Thanks so much for your passion, and for being such great fans!"

In other words, "Nope! Run along now!"

While this statement does leave a slight sliver of hope that Nintendo might change its mind somewhere down the road, as it has in the past with other products it originally had "no plans" to release in North America (the black Wii, anyone?), the announcement is nonetheless discouraging for Wii fans who have been aching for some new, interesting games to play on their console of choice. Evidently the Operation Rainfall campaign will continue, but at this point it all seems rather moot. Nintendo knows people are interested. If they're gonna announce these games for North American release, they will choose to do so in their own sweet time. When has Nintendo ever done any differently?

In the meantime, feel free to take solace in the few Wii releases that are coming up in the next few months. I know I plan to run out and pre-order the Wii-exclusive Smurfs Dance Party as soon as I finish typing this sentence.

Michael Pachter commented on this and agreed with consumers wanting the games over twitter...that's pretty cool atleast. They literally were just saying he was cool on this past bombcast, guess I agree.

God damn it. I bought the Wii for some of the unique games on it. Enough RPGs never make it out of Japan as it is.

Well, they sure are doing a terrible job of showing that CORE GAMER support they supposedly planned. Even if they've totally abandoned Wii it doesn't matter, these would be a great thing to release at Wii U's launch, since it's totally backward compatible.

I was waiting for someone on here to cover this. Thanks Alex. Nintendo really sucks. There's not much more to really say about it. I'll continue to try and help out Operation Rainfall since I want these games but I doubt it will happen.

I already own a Wii. I don't own either Super Mario Galaxy games or Metroid for it. This makes me (and possibly others) less inclined to get a Wii U if non-Mario exclusives aren't brought over. The possibility of playing ports from the 360/PS3, which I also own, on the WiiPad won't entice me to get one either.

I've been deeply interested in wanting to play both Xenoblade and The Last Story, and this just pisses me off. At this point Nintendo can't keep whining about trying to attract the core and complaining that certain gamers are abandoning their system, when they don't even try to bring out the games that those people actually want. I would buy both of those games in a heartbeat and actually play my Wii for a change.

Nintendo is by far the dumbest of the three gaming companies. They just baffle me and don't seem to understand.. anything.

I checked and apparently The Last Story was confirmed just a couple of days ago. It's coming next year.We still don't know about Pandora's Tower, but if they're localizing the other two I think there's a good chance we'll get that as well.
Niiiice^^ - I'm waiting since two decades or so for a game to be 'the next Final Fantasy 6'; The Last Story might be it. I got a good gut feeling about this one (spoken as if I've never had had that before ;D).

I really don't get it.
Two of the games are already going to be in English, and the money is literally right there. Nintendo says it wants to win back the core, all they have to do is put the game on US shelves. This is just bad bad service, there are no excuses. Even if they were going to take a loss (which they won't seeing all the pre-orders and obvious demand), they'd be strengthening their ties to the community and getting more Wiis out there.

These are Nintendo's games. Nintendo owns these IPs and funded their development.

Hell, Monolithsoft, the maker of Xenoblade? Nintendo wholly bought them up years ago. Xenoblade is technically a 1st party Nintendo game.

Also it's ironic you mention Layton, since Layton is Level 5's IP, not Nintendo's, and Level 5 is going to be publishing them from now on, not Nintendo.

I guess the Wii stays turned off for a little while longer then.  So remind me what the point of buying a WiiU is if they aren't going to have any hardcore games that the PS3 or 360 doesn't have?  You have basically made a device that is probably too expensive for most casual gamers and yet you constantly go out of your way to alienate core gamers.

Nintendo's profits are in the hardware. Why fall for the idea of building up a "core" with the long-time fans when they've made SO MUCH MONEY by only focussing on selling their platforms to the casuals, and are trying to sell them and you two new platforms?
Releasing one Mario and one Zelda is plenty to get the nostalgic "hardcore" to invest in their console, and that jobs was done years ago. Wii owners will get one last Zelda game, and that is all.
"See ya later. Buy our next console 'cause there's some hope of maybe playing good games on it possibly. Did we mention that It also has "Nintendo" printed on it somewhere!? You better grab a 3DS and Wii U before we lock them up in Walt Disney's vault."

I agree with the people who think Xenoblade would probably sell well enough here to invest in shipping it. But, again, they want to sell you the next console, not the one you already ponied up for. Just buy a Wii U and play the new Mario and the latest Zelda port while praying for something unexpected (like an interesting new title on a Nintendo platform).

Also this desire for the 'core gamer' doesn't mean spending time on resources on games that I can promise you wouldn't sell more than 100k copies. That just wouldn't be responsible for them.

What I recommend is trying to hit up companies like Atlus, who actually have a history of doing exactly what you want Nintendo to do, because they have the know how and resources to do it.

I guess i'm going to have to learn Japanese and start importing these games, I find it sad that game companies like to think there is no market for good Japanese games in america. I mean look at the huge popularity of FF7 and the fanbase it gained here. That's proof enough that a good game has a market anywhere. I'm tired of being drenched in poor first person shooters and lackluster role playing games. :(

May I humbly request a 'shoop of Reggie's head on Never Girl? It can be the afro, I'm not picky.

Alex was good to mention the potential for hope/backpedaling, but I don't expect Nintendo is likely to "pull an Atlus" on this. Remember Catherine was briefly declared NOT coming for North America, and then they're all 'psyche!! you still love us right? dawwww.'

Anyway, my UK copy of Tingle's Rosy Rupeeland still proves NOA won't just throw money unless they expect to see some profit. Maybe they're planning to finally put Quest 64 on Virtual Console? /chokesonvomit

@ArbitraryWater: Just import it? Maybe you haven't realized it but the Wii is region locked (as is the 360). Importing won't help unless you mod the Wii and I would rather not have to fart around doing that when I am sitting here with $100 in my hand just waiting for Nintendo to swap it with Xenoblade and The Last Story.

Guys come on, I mean the localization between British-English and American-English would just take forever. Nintendo of America doesn't have the money or the manpower to take on such a task. I mean it's not like they could just release it without localizing it. That would just be crazy.

Oh and on side note. Sega totally did this with Yakuza 3, but that actually released the game.

Seeing how 'The Last Story' is kind of a console seller for me personally (as in I might get a Wii U at release to play it), I can't quite grasp their reluctance. Even if they'd see little gains from doing a proper port, it'd still be the right thing to do for the few who care.

Then again, I'm living in Europe and apparently Nintendo Europe will publish these games in the European territories - lucky me RPGs are big in Europe. Now I'll just have to snag me one of them Wii U consoles.

Hey - maybe they want to publish HD versions of these games at the release of the Wii U and want these games to be fresh and viable when the console hits next year. That'd be nice!

Look it up. These games sell usually better in the US than in japan and ALWAYS better when counting US + europe, which makes sense considering the tiny fraction of wiis in japan compared to the rest of the world. The game's are made, you just need to translate. Some of these games ARE translated, you just need to press NTSC discs.

And this is why I'm tired of nintendo people telling me "nah, the Wii's alright! And hey, it's Nintendo, what can they do wrong?" This is exactly what. They are driving the platform into the ground all on their own.

This is actually disgusting....taking great games and never releasing them across the US and Europe....christ this is like Nintendo 15 years ago. There's no excuse at all these days for this type of crap. It's not like they'll be hemorrhaging money with 3 or more game releases, most of the games on the Wii are shit and hardly sell anyway, what have they got to lose? Lazy pricks....well lets face it, the 3DS and the WiiU were released to make up for the Wii's dying sales. I'm really disliking Nintendo as of late...
