Notch Reveals Who's Porting Minecraft to Xbox 360

Same studio who worked on Rare's XBLA ports is behind this one, too.

I could stare at this screen shot all day long.
I could stare at this screen shot all day long.

As Markus "Notch" Persson progresses towards Minecraft's official launch this November, the Minecraft world continues to expand, long before its "release date" on the PC--if you can call it that. Microsoft announced a Kinect-enabled Minecraft was coming to Xbox 360 at E3, but little else.

Persson revealed a little more about plans for the Xbox 360 version on Twitter last night, announcing that 4J Studios was the company behind it. 4J Studios has an established relationship with Microsoft, responsible for porting Perfect Dark, Banjo-Kazooie and Banjo-Tooie to Xbox Live Arcade. They also helped in porting The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion to PlayStation 3.

"They seem to have a very good mentality, and obviously are very talented," said Persson.

Minecraft is also coming to mobile platforms this year, though Persson hired someone in-house to work on that project. It's first arriving on Android (specifically, Sony's Xperia Play), but will also come to iOS devices down the line. All of this, of course, comes as Minecraft begins adding more game-like elements into its design structure, in anticipation of moving from an beta to final.

Looking forward to this but really really hope the Kinect features are optional "enhancements". If I want to look like an ass and have a laugh, fire up Kinect.  If I want to play a game, let me do that!

Is it still in Java? I have a hard time believing that MS would allow a java coded game on their platform...

Does MS not allow in-client updates along the lines of how MAG works on the PS3? That game gets patched from the inside, so to speak, with the updates to the game not needing cert by Sony

Great for people who aren't playing it on PC I guess, the small amount of people that they are.

The main issue is that it will get way behind in updates because of the speed they can clear Cert, or regular Minecraft updates will get slowed so they can have release parity with the 360 version, either way it sucks.

Of course, post Minecraft release we will probably see a substantial drop in patch frequency, so it might work out.

This is the worst IDEA ever. IT will suck even more and control worse than First person shooters on consoles already do. And I would say look bad but even the fucking crap weak xbox 360 ps3 and wii U hardware can handle minecraft.

How will it control worse? Not much precision is needed for the game.

But yeah, your next sentence says it all. Sure the 360 and ps3 are weak in comparison to many PCs, they are hardly "fucking crap" when you look at games such as Gears of War 3 and Killzone 3.

Probably like Team Fortress 2 on consoles. A stable, static game with little or no updates or extra content over time. How Microsoft has been opening up the Kinect hardware could mean that they're planning on making the Xbox a slightly more open platform, which could mean the possiblity for mods and steadier updates though.

I hope for the sake of 360 gamers everywhere that they do open that console up a little more.  Gamers on that system are missing out on some cool features by having such a tightly controlled system.

Hard to believe how mainstream Minecraft has become, and it's still seriously underrepresented by Rule 34.

Nope, it's not going to be a port.  Hopefully this means future versions on the PC won't run on Java either.

I wonder how this will work out on the 360, especially now when the modding API will be added (in a small scale) in 1.7

Having things like the "Better Than Wolves" mod adds a lot to the game already, and I don't think I could ever play Minecraft without mods again. Just as I could never go back to Oblivion on 360 after I had played it with mods on PC.

Good to see Dundee studios doing well, they did a great job with the N64 ports. It broke my heart to see Realtime Worlds close, I walked past their offices every day to Uni.

@WinterSnowblind: I think it was more Microsoft's decision to continue Crackdown with Ruffian (who happen to be in Dundee with a lot of previous RTW staff) but APB wasn't the only thing they were working on when they went bust. They just had no luck, really.

Yeah, good to see at least one Scottish based developer doing well. These guys did fantastic work on the Banjo and Perfect Dark games too.

Well there is the small time developer that goes by the name of Rockstar North but they haven't sold much since the Lemmings days.

Oh yeah, didn't they do something with cars at some point?

I actually thought they were based in America these days, but seems they're still in Edinburgh, so I take that back. But yeah, was referring more to the mess in Dundee with Realtime Worlds shutting down. Though they made a very poor decision by deciding to work on that doomed MMO, rather than just developing a sequel to Crackdown.

@TheCrushader: No, I bet you it will. I would say a year at most before someone ports it over. Dude, if theres an Xperia version, and iPad version, then there will most  be a PS3 version. Microsoft saying the the world "exclusive" to a  non first party game, means nothing in 2011. My question is will there be move support or not, I'd think it would be pretty cool feature for when it comes to PS3.
