Pigs Fly, Sky Falls, New MechWarrior Announced

The guy behind the original giant robot franchise is bringing it back on PC and Xbox 360. Huzzah!

File this one under headlines you never thought you'd see: Jordan Weisman, original founder of FASA and creator of the BattleTech universe--and, by extension, the MechWarrior games--is bringing yesteryear's vaunted big-robot franchise back to life on the Xbox 360 and PC. The game is not a sequel but instead a reboot of the entire series, which Weisman likens to the recent new-ification of franchises like Star Trek and Spider-Man.

I'll spare you the gory business details of how all this came about--which IGN covers in a thoroughly in-depth Q&A--and just show you this sweet-looking launch trailer, which Weisman describes as being indicative of "what the game should be," though note this isn't actually the game itself.

Between the involvement of original MechWarrior dudes and that trailer, I'm tentatively optimistic this might actually turn out like a proper MechWarrior game oughta. Specifically what I'm looking for is a robot that controls like a tank and overheats and makes you eject when you're about to blow up. But given that the game will have to work on a 360 controller, I hope the gameplay isn't dumbed down too much.

What's your past experience with the MechWarrior series, and what would you like to see in a new version? Did you know Dave Snider used to be in a MechWarrior 2 clan? Did you know they even had clans back then?

while this looks good graphically, so did MW4. i just hope it doesn't play like MW4. i've played the Mechwarrior/Battletech games since they were on my IBM 286 and think MW3 on PC was the best. Mechwarrior is meant to be a simulator; you pilot a massive tank-like mech. the very little of MW4 I played felt more like you were playing a FPS as a large mech, which is not the same.

Mechwarrior 2 sits up there with TIE Fighter as one of the best games of this type and era. I can totally remember going through "trials" in my "clan" as our point commander taught me how to circle strafe. Back then having a joystick with a swivel axis was essential for games like mechwarrior. Fun stuff.

I stayed with the rest of the games, even up to the mechcommander games that brought the FASA universe to RTS gaming.

Goddamn! I've been just thinking how awesome it would be to see a new Mechwarrior game. Can't wait to jump in an Atlas and go for some dual gauss cannon action.

Unfortunately, this game takes place in 3015, during the Succession Wars. So uh, no gauss rifles for you.

Unless the game somehow lets you play as a member of the ComGuards.

MechAssault 2 was my game years ago...I hate to brag but out of online multiplayer games that is one that I can actually say I was pretty damn good at.  I'm super excited for this, it looks like Chromehounds with better graphics and cooler mechs.

I use to play all the Mechwarrior Games ..starting with MechWarrior 2  it was the game franchise that made me buy a Joystick with foot-pedals.
it was the reason for me joining a clan, it is the reason i still call some of my former clan members best friends and it was the most fun I had playing PC games online.

So for me this and the Mechwarrior mod coming for Crysis is pretty awesome news.

The one thing that worries me is that they said its also for the 360... and that limits the control like what it use to be in the good old days.

Cause when you played it on the PC you pretty much needed all the buttons.. to name a few:

  • Throttle control
  • Flush coolant
  • Shutdown override
  • Zoom weapon
  • Jumpjets
  • Weapon grouping

And I haven't even mentioned/counted the standard movement controls and aiming...
so unless the 360 version comes with its own joystick like they did with Steel Battalion ... they will remove some features...

But in the end I know this is a day one purchase.. hell I would even preorder it now if I could... Just for old time sake..

*resists urge to make bad joke about Japanese game companies*

Nah, Gauss rifles were super-ultra-rare in the game's timeframe. You probably won't find one of those until the endgame. Also, the Warhammer's default loadout includes 2 arm-mounted PPCs. The blue beam is definitely a PPC effect.

That being said, it's noteworthy that all of the Warhammer's armament is present and correct. The version in the video is probably a 6R - the Davion variant doesn't mount the machine guns.

Nah. Ya see, that's a uh, that's a Warhammer. It used to be an Assault Mech but then got reclassified as a Heavy 'Mech as newer 'Mechs came out. Warhammers are famed for their dual PPCs, or Particle Projection Cannons. Those are the light blue beams in the video.

WHM-6R Warhammer

Mass: 70 tons
Chassis: StarCorp 100
Power Plant: VOX 280
Cruising Speed: 43.2 kph
Maximum Speed: 64.8 kph
Armor: Leviathan Plus
Armament:
2 Donal PPCs
2 Martelle Medium Lasers
2 Magna Small Lasers
1 Holly SRM6 Pack
Manufacturer: StarCorp Industries
Communications System: O/P 3000 COMSET
Targeting and Tracking System: O/P 1500 ARB

Construction of the Warhammer BattleMech, which was designed primarily as an assault 'Mech, began in 2515 and continued up until after the fall of the Star League. The original requisition by General Sternson to StarCorp Industries called for "a mobile 'Mech with enough firepower to destroy or severely damage any 'Mech of the same weight class or lower." StarCorp's answer was the Warhammer. There were several different production runs of the 'Mech, including the Class 6D and the Class 6K. In the current era, several modified versions have also been developed within the Successor States.

Because of its size and weaponry, the WHM-6R Warhammer is one of the most dangerous and powerful 'Mechs ever placed in the field. In particular, its Donal PPCs and support weapons give it the sheer firepower a first-line fighter needs. All Warhammers are equipped with a special searchlight that ties directly into their O/P 1500 ARB tracking system, making the 'Mech a formidable night-fighter. Mounted on the 'Mech's left torso, the system can function either as a simple searchlight or as part of the targeting system.

The WHM-6R is also equipped with both small lasers and machine guns, making it a threat to any infantry and support craft foolhardy enough to close in on it.

The 6R carries 18 heat sinks, while some of the variant versions have as many as 20 heat sinks. Thus, the Warhammer has the heavy weapons as well as the means to fire those weapons on a prolonged basis.

During the battles with Stefan the Usurper near the end of the Star League era, the WHM-6R Warhammer played an important role as a front-line combat 'Mech. With the fall of the Star League, the 'Mech remained in wide use by all five Houses.

At Carl Davion's request in 2876, House Davion forces created two crack lances almost totally from Warhammers, with some Riflemen support 'Mechs. These functioned as heavy attack lances in several battles on the planets David and Mara against House Kurita. Using the tactic of combined firepower, the Warhammer lances easily punched a hole in the Kurita defense. The victorious units eventually became a part of the Syrtis Fusiliers, but many of the Warhammers had to be replaced with other 'Mech classes, due to losses and damage.

In 2990, House Marik's 6th Regiment of the Defenders of Andurien successfully launched several critical attacks against House Liao in the Alder Highlands of the planet Teng. Using a combat lance made up mainly of Warhammers, the Marik victories showed how powerful the Warhammer could be when properly supported in combat. Their losses were minimal, while House Liao forces were driven to a drastic change of strategy due to the damage their forces took.

In 3021, the Warhammer proved itself again in battles fought by The Black Widow Company of Wolf's Dragoons while in service to House Steiner. In that year, Wolf sent The Black Widows to the planet New Wessex, a forward base and staging area for several of Kurita's 'Mech regiments. In the famous battles for Harlow's Wood, Kerensky's Warhammer led The Black Widows in a running week-long battle that mauled two of Kurita's 20th Draconis battalions, then escaped offworld.

Oh, hell yes.  I've been waiting for another one of these.  Mechwarrior is a game that benefits more than most from better graphics, as the spectacle of all the projectiles and lasers flying around is a big part of what keeps me in the action.  It'll be interesting to see what kinds of refinements and additions they've tried to make, though I have to echo others' concerns that the nuance of the controls may be gimped quite a bit from before now that the game is on the 360 (which I could live with, but it'd be disappointing to see happen).

Hopefully they expand on the 'mech assembly system of MW4.  Oh yeah, and new weapons.  More new weapons, please!  :D

No, the Timber Wolf won't be in the game, sadly. You see, the Timber Wolf is a Clan OmniMech, and the Clans won't arrive in the Inner Sphere until 3049 when they invade the Free Rasalhague Republic, the Draconis Combine, and the Federated Commonwealth. This game's talking place all the way back in 3015, during the Third Succession War.

The Inner Sphere is made up of five warring Houses, plus ComStar. They all began fighting the Succession Wars after the fall of the Star League in 2781. You see, the Star League was a golden age for all mankind, when the entire Inner Sphere was united in harmony and technology advanced in breathtaking fashion. However, all good things must come to an end. One Stefan Amaris, later called the Usurper, grew resentful and orchestrated the conquest of the Star League's Hegemony worlds while most of the Star League Defense Force was off fighting a Periphery rebellion very similar to the Reunification War that had been waged several decades before. Aleksandr Kerensky and the SLDF returned and defeated Amaris after a long and devastating campaign. However, the Star Lord was dead and the House leaders each wanted himself to be named the new Star Lord and ruler of humanity. Thus, the last vestiges of the Star League came to an end.

The Clans are the descendants of Kerensky's Star League Defense Force, which went into Exodus after the Star League was dissolved. They traveled deep into uncharted space for over a year before coming to settle in the Pantagon Worlds. However... gradually the populace, which had once been mainly soldiers, became restless and soon began revolting and warring among themselves. Nicholas Kerensky, the son of Aleksandr, took his loyal troops and went into a second exodus, to a group of new planets he called the Kerensky Cluster. He made his homeworld the planet of Strana Mechty, Russian for "Land of Dreams" and formed the original 20 Clans, each named for a ferocious creature that had survived in the Cluster. After many years of preparation, the Clans returned to the Pentagon Worlds and liberated them from the decadence and barbarism that had taken hold, in Operation Klondike. Thus, they grew and began genetic engineering experiments, always waiting for the time of destiny, when they would be strong enough to return to the Inner Sphere and restore the glorious Star League.

Then the order came, "Furl the sails.
ready for jump, mighty warriors.
We journey back, we journey home,
carrying the flame of the Star League
back to the hearth. We face the ignorant
who believe themselves civilized and strong,
but they will soon discover otherwise.
We are the Clans, the Star League incarnate.
None can stand against us and survive."
- The Remembrance, Passage 272, Verse 8, Lines 11-19

The only game I would be happy seeing FASA Studios working on right now is a new Crimson Skies game. That game's online multiplayer was second only to Halo 2 on the original XBox imo.

Maybe I'm an ultra-geek who would appreciate the added immersion a ridiculously oversized, unnecessarily complex controller would bring to a Mechwarrior game, okay?!

Awesome. Still Mechwarrior. Still borring to me. I never could enjoy the mechwarrior games back on the snes and pc. Nothing in that video makes me remotly interested sadly. Maybe I just rather have my robots looks like voltron or power rangers or transformers or something, not walking tanks with t-rex arm guns.

Good mech game = complicated flight sim-like controls

Bad mech game = deathmatch with 3 second respawns and press X to do everything controls.

This thread makes me sad I chose to raise myself on UT and AoE2 instead of ever checking MW out.
Hell, the only memory I have is some time in the far past where I played a game with robots.
And it was Mechsomething.
So apparently 3 is the best?

It will be interesting to see how this turns out.  I'm not in the "awesome!" category because I can't find anything to make me believe that Piranha Games can pull this off despite Weisman's (& Smith and Tinker Inc.) input.  I hope I'm wrong, but a CGI trailer, as cool as is I don't think that's much of a sign of how actual game play will be implemented.

Long ago myself and a few friends got together to play Battletech Tabletop, and to this day i have a handfull of minis and source books packed away in the back of the closet.  The game world and story are something I hope they can really re-claim.  This video gets me excited for what they *could* make, and hopefully with Weisman working on this they can re-ignite the series for all of us fans.  I also hope they can capture more of the tactical feel of the tabletop game, and judging from their interview it sounds like they're at least trying.  Destructable urban environments and pretty graphics could really make this franchise appeal to alot of gamers.  Too much more to say, Im excited and hope this is as good as it could be!

Excuse my french here. Fuck yeah! I don't want to get my hopes up to much here as I know the game will be dumbed down for the 360s limited controls and graphic capabilities. I have faith in the game industry once again.

@MisterMollusk: Mechassault is probably a little too dumbed down. You don't think there's a middle ground where the controls could still be complex enough for longtime fans, but not so esoteric as to turn off people who are more comfortable with controls that feel closer to a FPS? That's all i'm really hoping for.
