Pre-Release Killzone 2 Demo Only For Pre-Orders in US

Yeah, good. Restrict access to the thing that helps you sell games to people who have already purchased it. Great idea.

Is it weird that I still get excited about the release of hot new first-person shooters?
Is it weird that I still get excited about the release of hot new first-person shooters?
Last time I checked, demos were out there in order to get people so excited about a game that they can't help but buy it. They're like little interactive ads for upcoming products. But occasionally publishers seem to forget that this is the Way of Things, and they get a little extra on the side.

That's going to be the case with the upcoming demo for Killzone 2. As seen on Destructoid, it sounds like access to the game's demo will only be possible prior to the game's release if you pre-order the game from everyone's least favorite game retailer, GameStop. So in order to get the thing that's supposed to help you decide if the game is right for you or not... you need to swear your allegiance to a specific retailer and claim that you'll buy the game from them. How perfectly backwards. Apparently this is only applicable in the States, and Europe will get the demo properly as a regular PSN download. And it's been confirmed that the demo will become properly available down the road, after the game has been released.

So it's not a permanent screw job on the part of some wheeler/dealer looking to ensure Killzone gets a bit more face time at GameStop by giving them a primo exclusive item. But is taking that kind of risk with what's easily the company's biggest exclusive release since Metal Gear Solid 4 smart? I ain't no businessman, but if I were Sony, I'd be trying to get as many people as possible to play or see Killzone 2. I'd be practically forcing the demo to download onto consoles. I'd be including it with Blu-Ray movies. I'd be stuffing it into bags of cereal along with a note that says "WE THINK THIS MIGHT BE THE BEST GAME WE'VE RELEASED ON THE PS3 SO FAR AND HOPEFULLY YOU'LL AGREE AND IMMEDIATELY PRE-ORDER A COPY."

Maybe Sony just assumes that Killzone 2's success is pre-determined. Considering it's shipping into a largely empty release window, that's not too unbelievable. Of course, one could argue that the people who don't pre-order games might not be the type who rush out and buy a game on day one, so by the time word of the game's existence filters down to their casually gaming ears, said demo will already be widely available. For the rest of us, perhaps a European PSN account would come in handy next month.

Damn I really hate the dualshock for FPS's. I prefer the 360 controller, oh well thats not gonna stop me from buying the game. Oh and on a side-note, hey Jeff why is there so many goddamn fanboys here, sony fanboys, and xbots (retarded fucking name)? What is this place, Gamespot?

To thiago, the demo gives you a sample and a "hands-on" of the game and is probley the ultimate way of deciding if you like the game or not without having to buy. There are alot of games that looked awesome in the past but turned out to have really hollow gameplay or a poor structure of game pace. Games arnt "obligied" to give you a demo but lots of people prefer trying it out "hands-on" before they buy instead of risking by the reviews and hype. At the end of the day.. Why are you defending killzone 2? Its sad when the fans have to step in to defend the "pride" of the game they have put faith in...Let the game hold up and see if it puts up to its actions

Couldn't agree more. Releasing a demo for a game after it comes out is just plain dumb. For example - the MGS4 demo coming months after the full game.

"To thiago, the demo gives you a sample and a "hands-on" of the game and is probley the ultimate way of deciding if you like the game or not without having to buy. "

Then wait after the release date, download it and test it yourself. What's the issue here? This will be on PSN afterwards anyways. Free demos are a privilege, not a right. If a company feels like doing it, good, if not then it is their choice. Wait for the release date and see it for yourself.

"Why are you defending killzone 2? Its sad when the fans have to step in to defend the "pride" of the game they have put faith in...Let the game hold up and see if it puts up to its actions"

EXACTLY! This game isn't even released, not even available for reviewers and people are already trying to destroy it. It's as if they were affraid this will be GOTY and set a new graphical standard. They fear the hype is true.

I am not defending anything, I am the voice of reason and logic. This whining is illogical. What makes you believe that any company is obligated to give you free demos?

I am curious though, as to how many of the enraged commentators here actually own a PS3.

This is exactly the type of thing that keeps the PS3 from being so widely adopted. That and the initial purchase cost.

EDIT: @Giyanks22: Actualy yes they did. Except they didn't label it a "demo"... MS required folks purchase the first printings of Crackdown if they wanted in on the Halo 3 Multiplayer Beta (aka demo).

Maybe this will be as exclusive as the "exclusive" prince of persia costume that you got if you preordered that game.

I'll support this move by only buying a used copy of the game a few weeks after it comes out.

This makes no damn sense, the people who really want Killzone are going to pre order or buy it day one. What's the point of giving them access to a demo to a game they're already going to buy anyway? The point of the demo is to sway people who are not so sure INTO buying it. looks like Hacksaw Jim Duggan came down and hit someone with the Stupid Stick on this one.

Why should i have to pre-order the game from gamestop? I don't mind pre-ordering it first, but i'd rather go somewhere closer to me.  I'm in Canana though, but i assume it's going to be the same thing as in America.

I've complained that demos are marketing tools and should be used as such in the past.  I've also since considered it completely futile.  It still makes little sense to me, but whatever.  It isn't these big games that I need convincing on.

On that note, anyone play the Sonic Unleashed demo?  Come on Sega.  You know damned well a Sonic level is not what I wanted to try.  I've yet to rent the game and give it a proper try, but them making no mention of the werehog in the demo doesn't instill any confidence in me about the quality of the werehog.  That'd be like a Ratchet and Clank demo that confined you to a grind rail.

I find it hard to be sympathetic since it's just a demo and we only get the game two days before the U.S.. Whereas you almost universally get everything first (sometimes months ahead of us) and far, far cheaper. Anyhoo, Killzone2, OFP2, ARMA2...roll on 2009.

There are 2 sides to this

Jeff isn't wrong, but maybe over reacting a little.

Look at LBP, giving the beta to a million+ people (which was pretty much a demo) might of been a bad move because a lot of people probably felt that they got to play the game and with all the other games coming out at the end of 08 they probably didn't feel the NEED to buy LBP.

So I don't blame Sony or GG for holding back the public release demo until after the game is out.

But Jeff, a pre order is not a contract to buy a game, you can cancel it at any time, so let's not over react please.

'Here, take this bonus for buying our game.'

It doesn't even matter. The 'demo' is going to be a 15 minute 'oh, that's nice' that you'll have to delete after an hour download (yes, I don't want to pay 100 dollars a month for internet), so I don't get what everyone's pissing their panties for.

I agree, Jeff. It's like Sony is worried it'll suck like Resistance 2.

That's right, I went there. R2's only fun mode is co-op and 5 maps that get old after a week != worth $60 like Insomniac workers want you to believe.

I'm really tired of the anti-Gamestop bent, Jeff.  It's old, tired and short-servicing the vast majority of GameStop outlets that do a phenomenal job.

That being said, it really sounds like Sony's trying hard to protect the game.  Limiting demo access to people who've committed to buying the game, having the exclusive review on the official rag... Something tells me this game isn't going to be half as good as Resistance 2.

I don't think anyone can say anything about the "vast majority" without having been to most of them, and even then the staff changes too often. It does seem like quite a few people have had bad experiences there, whether it be preorder-related or otherwise. I've heard quite a few stories on podcasts, and I've even got one of my own. At the time the original Gears of War was coming out, one of the employees tried to get my brother to preorder the special edition by telling him it came with a Todd McFarlane figure of some kind. I'm not sure if he was intentionally lying, but that misinformation is still harmful and reflects on the quality of the establishment. Their corporate orders are pretty annoying as well.

Xbots are trying to find horns in a horse's head. They need an excuse to bash Sony and say crap about PS3, that's the reason why the ridiculous and illogical comments around here. I would say that the majority of people posting those comments don't even own a PS3.

Resistence 2 is awesome. A shooter, the story line is not so great because it is an American style shooter, but the game doesn't stay behind any other of the same genre or any other for other platforms (PC, X360, etc).

They like to pretend PS3 and its games are failing...

First anyone that says the first KZ wasn't that good (review scores say otherwise) and why should we care about the 2nd, um there are plenty of games that were only OK in their 1st incarnation and flipped the switch on the sequel and became awesome ex. Streetfighter 1 = not so good, the sequel became a phenomenum.

With that being said the Demo comes from gamestop for preordering or you can get clothes for my Home avatar for preordering from Amazon. Neither preorder deal is all that inticing to me.

I will probably go with Amazon just because I have $10 off my next game which came with my preorder of Valkyria Chronicles.

The mentality of some people is fucking mind boggling.

"Well, was thinking about a PS3 for this game....was even thinking about this game but if I have to put money down to play a demo, eh. No. The consumer has spoken. So it shall be written......."

So you were interested in getting a PS3 for this game alone but because the only way to get a demo (FOR A CONSOLE YOU DON'T EVEN OWN) is to preorder from gamestop you decide not to? I'd hate to be anyone in your life and deal with you in any other more serious matters.

While, KZ2 looks promising, does Sony forget how universally panned the first game was? Jeff has it right: Sony should be giving the demo away, using every available outlet possible.

To preorder the game all you need to do it put $5 down on the game.  That gets you the demo and once you have had a chance to play it and decide you dont like it you can always cancel your preorder and get your money back.  I personally cant wait for the demo to come out.
