PS3 Memory Issues To Blame For Late Final Fantasy XIV Release

At least it isn't being chocked up to the "closed" nature of PSN, right?

It's been known for a bit that the PC and PS3 versions of Final Fantasy XIV would not be launched alongside each other this September. But the reason why the PS3 version will appear in March 2011--a total of six months after the PC version hits shelves--wasn't widely reported until earlier this week, when Square Enix revealed that reason is related to some sort of memory pinch.

"The main reason was the memory," FFXIV producer Hiromichi Tanaka told VG247 during Gamescom in Cologne, speaking through a translator. "On the PC, they have enormous memory. For [the] PS3, there's a restriction."

Tanaka didn't talk specifics on the memory hold-up. He reiterated "memory" when pressed, leaving us to wonder if it's RAM, hard drive, or even Blu-ray related. But he did add that Square Enix is working hard and steps are being taken to adjust the size of the game's memory. Thanks!

No Caption Provided

"[We] are adjusting the memory size and customizing it. It took longer then we were expecting. But we’re really working hard to bring it out as soon as possible.”

In other related news, there have been recent rumblings about the Xbox 360 version of the MMO, as Square Enix has carefully relaxed its position on Microsoft's "closed" Xbox Live service. But as of now, it still appears as if that version of the game probably not happening--not that you were holding your breath or anything.

And if you were expectant, go ahead and run through the short list of canned MMOs supposedly intended to come to the Xbox 360 within the last few years. It's deflating in that maybe-I-should-just-get-the-PS3-version sort of way. Champions Online... Star Trek Online... Lord of the Rings Online... That one driving game that was turned into a hands-free Kinect title...

It is pretty obvious that the PS3's video RAM is the issue.
Blu-Ray disc, the format of the PS3 release certainly can contain the entire game with its capacity, and even the lowliest HDD the PS3 was ever released with being 20GB is also not an issue.
I really don't see how "memory" could be construed as anything but video RAM in a console version of a PC/Console multi-release.
Seriously?!?

Honestly, if they're just thinking of memory now, it's too late.  That is not how you develop a console game.

It's entirely possible that this isn't just the programmer's fault.  It could be that the artists used too many overly detailed textures and now they have to go through and find what detail they can eliminate.  This sort of thing probably happens all the time, you just never hear about it.

I'm not suprised at all, 256mb video ram, then split off way over there, 256mb seperate (not shared) XDR ram. Honestly 256mb for the textures and the rest for loading, I was surprised they actually created FFXIII so well on the ps3 to begin with.

If anything, just do things the way they already did, low the textures and take away the grass.

Ppl might say, xbox360 has the same problem, no, they have shared ram, they can allocate more. Of course they can't use all 512mb, maybe like 400mb or more, still it's alot more than the ps3. Yet of course it won't be out on a xboxlive console. My points is ps3's split architecture isn't helpful probally for really large world games which requires alot of textures. Of course you might say what about ps3 exclusives, then again when was a game not linear and open world that ran great? Multiplatformwise, not RDR or GTA games. Running the FFXIV benchmark on the pc, it ran great for me at least, no problems there.

I've seen and heard so many bad things about this game that a delay is practically good news to me. Hopefully evolving into a cancel. One can only hope.

Not that i'm actually hoping this will happen because I hate all MMOs, but say if they did decide to port it to the 360. From a programmers standpoint, would it be easier since it's already done on the PC? Beacuse I've heard that it's way easier to port from PC to 360 and vice versa because the 360 is essentially a PC with an Xbox Dashboard OS.

Did they release an update on that thing? It was obvious that the initial figures were crazy wrong, playing one hour a day or else you can't play for 2 days is indescribably silly.

I'm sure when the game comes out, the system will work properly and not get in the way of regular players, but protect those that would play for 17 hours straight. I mean, otherwise players will burn down the Square Enix Headquarters in protest.

Agreed. It stands out to me as if they actually forgot about the PS3 version and possibly the memory issues was an oversight on their part?

It seems when developing something like an MMO for consoles, the RAM would be the first hurdle to overcome.

But with the latest edition to speed tree we won't worry about that problem with speed grass.

Awh. 256 Megabytes oughta be enough for anybody.
How will I be able to play Donkey Kong 64 now??

But yeah, literally the only thing that developers have left to squeeze in the long tail of a console's cycle is tighter code and memory management.  They don't get to raise the RAM requirements.

i dont know whether or not ff11 was a financial success (i suspect it was), but in terms of the fans, most who had played every previous ff game didnt even both to pick this one up, so its beyond me why they are doing this again. oh wait i forgot square enix doesn't care about their fan base anymore they are just money grabbers. when i was a kid i wanted to work for them, i started learning japanese in high school so that it might be a possibility, but now i really don't think they're anything special. sure they can make a pretty cutscene, but if the characters are idiotic, the gameplay is below par and all their most important development decision is how much they are gonna charge the fools who actually end up paying for their online games (which ff11 carried a higher monthly fee than world of warcraft, partly why i played wow and not ff11) it starts to really show why square enix are no longer the industry leaders. sales-wise they might do well, but twilight movies sell a lot of tickets, and that doesn't mean they are good.

Considering how FF14 even on the lowered quality settings of the new beta kicks most average PC's in the nuts, repeatedly, it's really not surprising.

Also, Yeah, memory is RAM, c'mon Nicholson. "

isnt there video memory as well? i know when you bu ya video card it says 256 or 512 or whatnot, that is separate from RAM. that is the video card's memory right? I could even see the translation being that blu ray read speed was an issue, but no i assume its the RAM since that is PS3's weak spot, but Nicholson couldn't just "assume" that for his article if Tanakka didn;t come out and say specifics....

" you do comprehend what memory is right? it means bugs, it means poor coding, causing ram leak and crashing/poor performance, all mmo's have this  there isn't an issue with ps3's hardware  and last i checked, this was such a poorly coded mmo it requires you to have a machine that can run crysis at 60 fps constantly, to even come close to running this game at 30fps. "
This, AND the fact that square really hasn't been working on the PS3 hardware very much (besides Nier), their teams are still probably still not very good at coding for PS3, but that's their fault.

lol everytime they try to make a console mmo they fail, it's always something and this 6 month delay makes me think that we're never going to see it on ps3 or X360... not that it matters for me.

Memory is RAM as HDD's (hard drives) and Blu-rays is to storage. C'mon, my girlfriend is completely illiterate when it comes to computers, but when I mention storage she knows I mean the HDD or anything that "stores" files. "

Don't be a douche, especially when you're wrong. What do you call storage on a cell phone? Memory. Like, "My new Droid has 8gb flash memory, plus an extra 24gb memory on a card." Verizon uses the word "memory" to mean "storage" right on the spec sheet in the store. Which just goes to show, most people don't know the difference.

You're going on about two different things. Those are just memory sticks. Is there memory sticks inside a console? Nope. Last I checked everyone called HDD's a storage device. Not memory. So before you call anyone a douche for calling out your journalist idol that you probably need to stop stalking, get your facts straight.

ugh PS3 and it's memory.

i would guess video memory since it's only 256 mb compared to 512 of the xbox and 1gb+ of PC
