Quake Live Exits Beta; Subscription Options Announced

Subscriptions are all the rage.

In beta no longer, id Software's Quake Live is now offering two new ways to get into its browser-based shooter action: via ad-free "Premium" and "Pro" subscriptions.

With a Premium membership, you'll be able to access 20 subscription-exclusive maps, an exclusive "Freeze Tag" mode, clan creation and joining options, and have your match stats stored for six months. Premium is $24 a year and that's not quite all it adds to the shooter. It also supports custom profile wallpaper in addition to subscription-based awards.

No Caption Provided

A Pro-level subscription, on the other hand, will run you $48 a year. Pro includes all of Premium's perks, but also gives you the ability to create your own servers and invite up to three other non-paying friends into Premium-specific maps. This is in addition to giving you the option to create your own clan and join up to 10 others, storing your match stats for 12 months, and access to Pro-specific awards.

Quake Live will continue to be free if you desire. The standard version of the game will remain ad-supported and will continue to provide over 40 arenas across five game modes, match-making, and even browser-based stat tracking.

== TEASER ==If you've got an interest in this business, either as a Standard user or possibly a Pro-power-player, take a gander at the game's official website. If you're curious about what'll be offered insofar as the pay-to-play maps, we've got your back (just below):

• Aerowalk (Duel)
• Battleforged (Duel)
• Black Cathedral (CA)
• Cold War (CA)
• Deep Inside (TDM)
• Dismemberment (Duel)
• Dreadful Place (TDM)
• Focal Point (Duel)
• Hektik (Duel)
• Industrial Accident (CTF)

Quake 3 is basically free to anyone who wants it but the netcode is nowhere near as good as Quake Live's. These extra features aren't mandatory and if you want you can stick to Quake 3. They will continue to support QLive and it's great community. The fee is a small token for the amount of enjoyment many get from the game. If you like your shooters sluggish with 3 shot kills then maybe this isn't your game but if you want an Arena shooter Quake Live is one of the few shooters left out there that still has a strong community and that's good enough for most players ;)

A fee for Quake 3?
A game that I could buy for 4 bucks and play for free forever?
That Quake 3? Yeah, no thanks.

For free, absolutely.  It's still a great game.

I wouldn't pay for it though.

except id doesn't have anything to do with Activision anymore.

This is still a dick move, though. I'm not playing after this. Not like I was playing it anyway.

How is it a dick move when they announced that they were moving to a subscription model years ago?

So what I feared has happened, and all of the servers in my skill level that used to be populated are either empty or have half the players.

Super weak. This might kill this game for me.

I have absolutely no problem with the idea of paying for parts of this game, but I don't think premium maps is the way to go. Player bases in multiplayer-only games need to be maintained, not cut up. Stupid move on id's part.

Quake has fallen behind the times, is now trying to rebuild.
