Rockstar Hints at Bully Sequel Maybe Coming Eventually

Sounds like any follow-up may be a ways off, but we'll take what we can get.

Jimmy found himself in plenty of fights, but he was also into kissin' dudes and chicks.
Jimmy found himself in plenty of fights, but he was also into kissin' dudes and chicks.

It’s an undisputed fact that Bully is the best game Rockstar Games has ever produced. The notion of an open world game set in high school continues to baffle me, but it totally, completely worked.

I’ve been patiently waiting for a sequel ever since, as Bully was ripe for making the collegiate leap. Bully was originally released on 2006, however, and rumors of a sequel have never come to fruition.

Throw a few more logs on the fire, though, as Rockstar VP Dan Houser spoke to Gamasutra about his decision making process when it comes to sequels, and mentioned Bully in the same breath.

“We knew that we didn't want to start doing the Bully sequel instantly at that second with those guys--even though it is a property that, like Max, we adore and might come back to in the future,” said Houser. “There was just no impetus to do that then. So we said, 'You can do Max, and then we will see what we can do with Bully.' So it was really waiting for the slot to open up and the group to open up to at least start work on it."

We could be looking at years before a sequel to Bully, but hey, I’ll wait as long as it takes.

I'm excited, but I'm also worried about how this will do. I don't know many people who have actually played Bully and are looking forward to a sequel. Rockstar's name still carries weight, but Bully wasn't exactly a hit.

I wanted to rent this when it first came out, however I was only 12 or so and my dad wouldn't let me get it because he thought the idea of playing as a bully for fun would corrupt my young mind.

I have still yet to play it.

I have Bully scholarship edition. Only problem is, it's the PC version. Is it still worth playing?

I don't know anyone who played Bully...is it any good? I would think with them working on GTA V and having Red Dead be so successful that the wild west would be their next endeavor once again.

Picked this up on a Steam sale last summer and could never get it to work properly with my Logitech F310 gamepad. Still really want to play it, is there any way to get it working without using Joy2key?

I only recently picked it up, thanks for Patrick's positive comments about it on the last few podcasts. I never thought I would like Bully, but I have to agree with Patrick. It's the best game Rockstar made. Somehow I never got into the GTA, L.A. Noir, Red Dead games that much. Like them, but nothing more. Bully is really fun so far and might be the first Rockstar game I finnish in well... it will be the first :D So a sequel would also probably be very welcome indeed.

Me too! That Townie girl was also pretty hot.

I loved the hell out of Bully and it was the game turned me on to Rockstar. I'd say it's my second favorite next to Red Dead Redemption.

This "game" spread disinformation about youth on an un-PRECEDENTED level! CHILDREN ARE NICE AND ALWAYS HAPPY AND NEVER PSYCHOTIC OR VIOLENT AT ALL, and they're CERTAINLY not SEXUAL and LIE AND CHEAT TO GET THEIR WAY!

I loved Bully. It somehow managed to be incredibly honest in between all its parody. The shitstorm it stirred up was maddening to watch though.

Patrick-

I think you might be reading this wrong.

So it was really waiting for the slot to open up and the group to open up to at least start work on it.

The slot he is referring to is the slot for Max. At the top of the question DH said this-

Gamasutra: Can you discuss the catalyst that made you decide its time to bring Max back and do more with him?

DH: Basically we have been meaning to start it for a while, but we have limited bandwidth and limited studios, and more games to make than we've started. So suddenly it was a good slot.

The soundtrack was fantastic and gave the game an identity. Here's hoping that if a Bully 2 were to exist, Shawn Lee would be back on board.

I downloaded Bully again after the guys were talking about it on the Bombcast. I played 12 hours when it came out. Apart from frame rate issues and 5 years of passing time it still holds up pretty well. Started again rather than continuing the old save. Having a really good time with it.

Patrick's adoration for Bully is cute/amusing. Personally it was the only Rockstar game to date that left me completely cold.

There's definitely some kind of story that they could wrap it around, but College just seems too easy. I love Jimmy Hopkins as a character, and I hope they stick with him for the main character. After the ending, I really want to see what he does with his life.

College is a little too easy though. What if he just has just graduated and has to find his first place to live, and start a real life. That would be something original and compelling, and definitely up Rockstar's alley.

If he's too much older, it really shouldn't even be called Bully anymore though, it should probably just be called Asshole.

Not sure you could sell that though.

Don't really think college is the direction they'll be going. Where's the conflict? College is an optional and, in many cases, preferred step in someones life. Besides, If you didn't like the college you were going to, you could just leave.

As one of the select few who champions Bully as Rockstar's finest hour on the PlayStation 2 (yes, it's even better than San Andreas), this news makes me very happy. Here's hoping we'll get to see Rockstar working their magic in that schoolyard environment once again.

Dude...Bully and The Warriors was an awesome era of rockstar gaming.

I kinda skipped Bully, I tried it but it just didn't stick so I never made it too far. Maybe I'll think about it sometime, like if there's another barren desert in Q3 2012 like there was this year...

Now The Warriors - that was awesome. The only beat 'em up I ever felt compelled to complete since maybe the original arcade version of Double Dragon. Thanks for the reminder on that billyhoush, I had forgotten it...great game.
