Ryan's E3 2010 Top Five

At the end of the day, when it's all said and done, after the smoke has cleared, when it comes down to it, and in hindsight… here's Ryan's top five games of E3 2010.

Jack Tretton sez: CHOKE ON IT E3! I'M JACK TRETTON!
Jack Tretton sez: CHOKE ON IT E3! I'M JACK TRETTON!
Trying to wrap your mind about both the massiveness and the density of everything on display at E3 while you're actually at E3 is the kind of thinking that will drive you mad; like, crazy bug-eyed, Cthulhu mad. Better, then, to give yourself a little time to process what you saw and try to parse out the actual games from the whole spectacle. So, now that a good two weeks have passed, what are the games I saw at E3 that have stuck with me? Why, thank you for asking, rhetorical person!

Kirby's Epic Yarn

After the uncomfortable and underwhelming Zelda demo, and the Wii Party and Mario Sports Mix announcements that seemed designed to underline Nintendo's laziest tendencies, I was checking my phone and completely ready to bail early on Nintendo's press conference to beat traffic. But it bounced back big from a weak opening by announcing just a whole slew of new, interesting-looking games. Among them was Kirby's Epic Yarn, which piqued my interest the most with its homespun art style. Playing a few levels of Kirby on the show floor supported my suspicions: this isn't going to be a challenging or high-impact experience, but the very fabric of this subtly inventive platformer will charm your pants off.

Face Ace

Face Ace is basically This: The Game.
Face Ace is basically This: The Game.
Face Ace is less a game and more a proof-of-concept for all the fancy new gear Nintendo is packing into the 3DS. More-so than any of the other 3DS demos I saw, Face Ace was the one that needed to be seen to be fully understood, so bear with me here. Face Ace starts by taking a picture of your face, which it then maps onto a winged-helmet-wearing head. Face Ace knows, roughly, where your eyes and your mouth are, and can twist your puppet-face into some crude, yet still profoundly disturbing animations. These faces, your faces, then start flying at you in 3D. Oh, and Face Ace remembers some of the previous faces it saw, so I had the pleasure of Brad's face coming at me and trying to kiss me. It was… uncomfortable.

So these faces are flying at you in the foreground, and the background is being generated by the two 3D cameras on the front of the 3DS, so you're seeing whatever is right in front of you, on the top screen, in 3D. I had the pleasure of watching these marauding little me-demons shoot out of the nearby crotch of Gunnar Johansson from Fatshark. Again, uncomfortable. Making the whole augmented reality angle that much more weirdly immersive is the fact that you're using the motion sensors to actually move the 3DS around in order to target incoming faces.

If that all doesn't sound totally insane and at least a little bit clever in its use of the 3DS technology, then I have done a very poor job describing the actual experience to you, and for that I apologize. I don't know if this could ever survive as a standalone game, but it gave me a weird-ass sense of hope for the future of Nintendo's new handheld.

Dance Central

Centralized dancing is my favorite kind!
Centralized dancing is my favorite kind!
Harmonix's Kinect-powered dancing game was the first piece of Kinect software I experienced first-hand at E3 2010, though it remained the most impressive for the duration of the show. Part of this speaks to relatively weak competition--most of the other Kinect games I saw either felt like tech demos, or did an abnormally apt job highlighting Kinect's shortcomings.

The interface and presentation are what make Dance Central work. Smartly, it doesn't rely on your movement data to generate your on-screen avatar's animation. This avoids the whole marionette issue that plagues many of the Kinect games I saw, and makes it easy for the game to both show you how to do the dance move correctly and highlight the parts of your body that aren't in the correct position. I also found the cue cards that show you the name and the starting position for the next dance move helpful when transitioning, but it's all these factors, plus a very, very generous learning curve, that softens the inherently intimidating premise of getting up in front of your TV and trying to dance "correctly."

I was a nervous wreck walking up to Dance Central for the first time, but I wasn't even through my first routine to Lady Gaga's "Pokerface," on easy, before I started feeling all cocky. Playing Dance Central at E3 was the first time since, let's say Dance Dance Revolution 2nd Mix, that I really enjoyed a dancing game. Even two weeks later, this is the game from E3 that I most wish I was playing right now.

Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood

This so reminds me of growing up with MY brother!
This so reminds me of growing up with MY brother!
This left a lasting impression in part because I really thoroughly enjoyed Assassin's Creed II, but nothing about that experience suggested that it would be much fun in a multiplayer setting. Assassin's Creed is all about the cat-and-mouse dynamic, so where would the fun be in just adding more cats? I hadn't considered that the cats could also be mice, which seems to be the simple twist the concept needed to work. If you thought it was satisfying to calmly walk up to some nasty Templar NPC and slip a hidden blade between his ribs, well, that's really kind of creepy, isn't it? Moral judgment notwithstanding, it's even better when it's a live target.

Super Scribblenauts

Scribblenauts was a game I adored in concept, but could barely be bothered to play once it actually came out. This was due in part to a few design and control missteps, both of which appeared to be high on the to-do list of developer 5th Cell for its sequel, Super Scribbelnauts. Apparently also on that list was the decision to add adjectives to the game's dictionary, which exponentially increases the number of objects that you can conjure up to help solve the game's puzzles. Super Scribblenauts is a simply awful game to try and play in the middle of all the sound and fury of the E3 show floor, though I got just enough of a taste of its silly, puzzle offerings to know that I want more.

Looking back on my list here, I'm personally kind of surprised at the complete absence of more traditional, core games. It's not that those games weren't being well represented, I guess it's just that they were known quantities. In a weird way, this was a hardware year for E3, just not in the same generational way it's been in years past, and the most exciting games for me were the ones that really showed off the potential of that new hardware.

I'm slowly coming to terms with the fact that the game industry seems to be heading towards 3d as their next "big thing", even though I detest it so. I'm accepting that it probably won't go away any tine soon so unless 3D are once again seen as a gimmick and thrown aside, I'll probably start to see 3D taking over in the decades to come.

But that's not the reason I personally don't like Face Ace. The concept is sound and it does sound like it could be fun to play, even with the 3D(which is the appeal for it I suppose). No, my problem with it, along with any other game that takes whatever you're pointing the cameras at into account, is that you'll look like an idiot spinning in circles carrying a DS around, pointing it at things like crotches in order to get a giggle over stuff flying out of them. That doesn't really appeal to me. :/

@Cramsy: Ryan is a bit of a console and more specifically Microsoft only guy though. This is a pretty weird set of games to have as your "top 5" from E3.

Personally I would have had Kirby's Epic Yarn but the rest of the games on that list looked pretty average and to not have Portal 2 on there is a sin.

My personal top five from E3 would have to be:

  1. Portal 2
  2. Zelda: Skyward Sword
  3. Donkey Kong Country 4
  4. Driver: San Fransisco
  5. Goldeneye 007

@ptys:
Brotherhood isnt the final game in the trilogy its just a spin off of Assassins Creed 2. Its not going to finish the overall story just continue Ezio's story. Ezio is probably not going to be in Assassins Creed 3 which will probably finish the main story.
People are okay with the game because it looks good and we know that there still going to put alot of time into Assassins Creed 3 so were not worried.

@Microshock:  People like feedback, especialy non-judgmental points earning feedback. Whilst what you say is true I can't see many people persuading their mates that sticking on a pop video and dancing alot would be a great party game. Dance Central with it's neutral referee and instant feedback though might be an option.
For me both new control sets are too expensive with too little going for them right now.

Maybe, but it was still super-fun. "
Do you think it's going to have the staying power that games like Rock Band do? Cause I don't think it'll be played after a week or two.  And they're wanting to charge upwards of 3 dollars per DLC song for the game..  I don't know. Doesn't sound like a killer app to me, but you never claimed it either, which is good "
Well, Harmonix explained in an interview with Jeff that all DLC songs would include new dance routines, so it's not as much focused on the music itself, but on learning new choreography and moves. I think that's a great way to keep it fresh and interesting. You have a good point on the DVD-stuff, but those won't give you any response or interface on what you're doing wrong like this game does.

Can't say I'm the targeted audience since I'm more of a core gamer and prefer traditional games. But still, I love dancing, and Dance Central definitely piqued my interest since it encourages you to use your whole body and focus on actual moves, instead of goofing around on a mat or waving controllers. Also, Ryan seems to enjoy it, that's huge plus. Though, I'm hoping they'll include some subgenres of electronic dance music, not really a huge fan of RnB, but I guess it's the natural starting point.

Anyway, great list Ryan. Off topic, will you invite Gunnar Johansson to the Bombcast again? Never gets old listening to you guys screaming in anguish as you're chewing down Swedish "delicacies".

I have hope for Super Scribblenauts as well, and I agree that Kirby's Epic Yarn looked awesome.  The new Assassin's Creed I'm divided on, but hopeful.

That said, I still don't understand all the gaming media buzz over Dance Central.  In concept and execution it just seems to fall flat to me.  When I saw it, I thought it was hilarious, in that hilariously bad kind of way.  I expected it to top off everyone's "they actually thought this was a good idea?  lol" lists from E3, not people actually think it was a good game.  I just don't understand it, especially not with a pretty large price tag to entry (Assuming most casual gamers don't have a 360 already, that's several hundred dollar investment for one game).

I suppose the biggest thing for me is the user feedback and the 'game' aspect. I can't speak for Ryan, but  you mention these DVDs and they don't show you what you are doing wrong. They don't make a game out of it. They don't make it potentially competitive. The game is using Kinect to find out what you are doing and give you a response, whether that's through score or the red parts on the dancers. Something you don't get with a flat, one way experience on a DVD.

That's what makes it, well, a game. It doesn't have to be a killer app when, as Ryan says, it's still super-fun.

I'd say you're missing the point.  It's not a list of "what are the most influential games of E3", or "What will revolutionize the industry and become big holiday sellers."  It's a list of "What Ryan had the most fun with at E3."  Who gives a fuck about its staying power right now beyond Harmonix themselves and fucknuts with nothing better to think about?

There's quite a lot of disinterest towards Dance Central in here, which probably isn't surprising considering it's not a traditional sort of game. It's in my top five, though, and I thought it looked pretty awesome.

Kind of an underwhelming show for people who didn't go I guess.  Watching E3 stuff and reading about what everyone finds exciting makes me feel so disconnected.  I suppose that for most of these things you'll just have to get a hands on to understand what is so great about it.  The only stuff that really stood out to me were traditional games.

I have a picture of Dance Central that it is just going to be a list of current radio hits.  If the game doesn't have "Dancing with Myself" by Generation X, then I will be severely disappointed in Harmonix.

The reason I pay attention to gamer centric media, like E3 coverage, is to be more informed and feel connected. And even though I want to experience these things for myself, I still have a good idea, and imagination, of what's what to get excited--especially this year's E3. What an amazing show.

Great picks, Ryan. I'm looking forward to all of them except Face Ace. But that's only because I don't see lasting appeal to it and doubt it'll be expanded into an actual product.

Having games with the world "Epic" in, will not make the game "Epic". Kirby does look interesting, but I can't say I am too impressed with Epic Mickey. If they wanted to put the word Epic in any game thou Dance Central would have to be my choice.

" A weird-ass sense of hope for the future" is a phrase that simply does not get used enough.
